What made me fall deeply in love with the novel rendition of *Sometimes A Great Notion* was the beautiful, poetic and often mystical way Ken Kesey describes the nature of the Pacific Northwest. He talks extensively of the fog rolling in slowly over the Oregon coast, the constant mist-like rain that permeates the town’s atmosphere and the beautiful sights of birds, fish, ferns and abundant wildlife thriving thanks to the Wakonda Auga River. He constantly reminds us of the significance…

“Don’t get sentimental on me, makes me think I’m gonna die”

Oh my god this movie fucking rips. Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and a runaway train packed full of hazardous material careening toward disaster. What’s not to love? He’s constantly searching for a deeper meaning in his life, looking for anything to piece together the puzzle of the human condition. After a lifetime of science, he begins to toy with deprivation tanks, diving deep into hallucinatory states. Claiming he’s using these experiments for a bit of fun, he only participates for a brief summer, alongside his partner Arthur. When the experiments end, however, he becomes consumed by…

    mid90s

    ★★★½

Mid 90s frustrates me in a way plenty of people have already pointed out - the flimsy plot and meandering structure leaves a lot to be desired. There seems to be no big conflict or resolution and barely any character development which is aggravating. The whole movie seems to ride on a gimmick, it's set in the mid 90s and rides so heavily on that idea. The soundtrack is packed with underground LA hip-hop from the era, the movie is…
