"This whole country's just like my flock of sheep....They think like I do. Only they're even more stupid than I am, so I gotta think for 'em."

Prescient look at the artifice and utter cynicism of mid-century celebrity culture. Like The King of Comedy, its observations are as true today as ever. Andy Griffith gives one of cinema’s truly great performances as Lonesome Rhodes, whose character arc is as epic as it is tragic.

Unfortunately, when the jig is up after being caught on a hot mic, recent realities tell us that for some personality cults, nothing is disqualifying.

"I thought Mr. Clutter was a very nice gentleman... I thought so right up to the time I cut his throat."

Had no idea that the Black Legion was a real hate group. And so interesting to see Bogart as such a weak, shallow, vulnerable jerk. Much more emotional depth than most of his 1940s roles.

John Wayne characters could often be pig-headed bastards who weren’t very sympathetic, especially by contemporary standards. That certainly applies here. But with co-stars Montgomery Clift, Walter Brennan, Joanne Dru, and Noah Beery, Jr., Howard Hawks’s versatility is on full display. A classic American western, complete with all the cliches and stereotypes, but bursting with energy and vitality.

There's a brilliant, much shorter film in here. As it stands, it's an overly long film by half. Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce are both outstanding, but this story just doesn't require a run time that sits between The Godfather Part II and Once upon a Time in America.
