Time has made the sting of this dumpster fire not as sharp but this movie is still irredeemable.
Every scene goes for some unearned emotional payoff. Entire plot feels like they were coming up with it on the spot. I could go on but everyone hates this movie so I have nothing new to say.
I also really hated seeing all of the original trilogy characters in this, especially Luke’s Slavoj Zizek looking ass
Amazing lava shots. Doomed lovers is always a sexy premise. Always impressed how French people can say everything with equal parts wit, philosophy; and humor.
Miranda July’s delivery as narrator was twee to the point of distraction though.
Sort of a missed opportunity with an interesting premise of going back to post war Japan. Contradictory and conservative message compared to the original. The origin of Godzilla is completely glossed over - in the original he’s the consequence of nuclear testing as a kind of divine intervention/play on Japanese fears. This movie doesn’t mention his origins at all and instead there’s a right wing “Japan needs an army” message that doesn’t really work. Perhaps could have been handled well…
Best movie I watched on plane ride back. Appreciate the structure and aimlessness of it. These kids were def cooler than me, but the spirit of driving around trying to find beer and pot in high school was captured pretty dang well.
