Remains my personal favorite A24 film and I hold the belief it remains the strongest film from their filmography. I had the chance to purchase the screenplay book and read it during what was my third viewing, providing another more introspective and emotional depth I didn’t feel in my previous viewings.

I was expecting a cross country murder thriller not a journey of an amnesiac learning how much of a piece of shit he was to his family.

    ★★

This film struggled in what direction it wanted to go: Napoleons military victories, the internal political innuendos that foresaw Napoleon’s ascension, or his love for Josephine? Ridley Scott has always found an equilibrium in achieving both spectacle and a philosophical narrative, but severely struggled in this adaptation of one of the most prominent men in history. Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal was utterly disappointing where it only was just portraying himself despite having the looks and the proficiency to take on Napoleon. The cinematography itself on the other hand was beautiful, great usage of lighting where it achieved that portrait affect you’d see in French art.
