I've always liked Paul Feig's sense of humour, which gels well with McCarthy's self-deprecating line delivery. The spy genre is no stranger to satirical treatment, of course, and all of the usual tropes are here. The film's novelty rests in showing that women of a certain weight can kick ass too, while the men are idiots from top to bottom (casting Jason Statham as a clueless, bumbling CIA agent is richly against type). I enjoyed it for a laugh, though it overstays its welcome by twenty minutes.
One good scene: McCarthy's character getting her James Bond-esque gadgets.
Feels like an elevator pitch rather than a fleshed-out feature. Plot-wise, it doesn't make a lick of sense, so it relies on quirk and tone for its appeal. If you're dialled in to its particular wavelength, full of irony and repartay, you might run with it. But the occasional chuckle just wasn't enough to sustain my interest. More gobbledygook about magic and preposterous "twists" meant to distract from how weak the story is. I can't imagine enough people clamoured for a sequel to the first installment, but here we are. (Apparently a third film will release later this year. Oof.) Even the brawl scenes are poorly done; the camera cuts so much (a cheat) that you can't orient yourself to the action.
One dumb scene: The one where a group of adults don't realize they aren't in…
