The Day the Earth Blew Up is a loving tribute to science fiction cinema and animation. The 2D work is so confidently executed! Disappointed... I was very excited for this but literally struggled to see what was happening. Most of Monkey Man looks like someone was told to "dirty up the frame" and did so without clear intent. It's out of focus, constantly cutting, shakycam-filled, and has an inconsistent framerate for some reason. And I don't mean 48-24, I mean it looks like it was retimed at points - poorly. One of those great films that reinforces my love of going to the movies. A sublime experience. Went in without knowing anything and barely blinked throughout. I didn't leave the auditorium with tears in my eyes or existential questions, but I had a blast.
The direction & cinematography are engaging, the dialogue is slick, and every performance is captivating. Sure, I expect as much from Blanchett and Fassbender, but Tom Burke and Marisa Abela both really blew me away too! Black Bag rules.
