It's been said before that Dark Star feels like a movie that was made by a bunch of stoned college students in the 70s. And I mean that's pretty accurate cause that's exactly what it is. I kinda feel like John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon were sitting in their dorm room and said "Fuck it. Let's make a goofy sci-fi movie."
And that's exactly what they did.
As usual Carpenter wrote, directed and scored the film. It's truly his vision…

It's so haunting and claustrophobic. The score and the electrical humming of the ship or the ship's alarms all blend together in an incredibly unsettling way.
The film builds tension and dread in a way that is insanely effective. It keeps on escalating the dread by getting you comfortable for the first 20 or 30 minutes and then the facehugger attacks John Hurt. And the next 20…

Because we're so focused on our little group we don't even consider the possibility that the whale is also part of that group. And just because they're ok (apart from the bird) doesn't mean the whale will be. The whale to me represents change. Sometimes something that's good for someone, isn't good for someone else.
