Throughout watching Babylon, I couldn't help but think about (and have my experience enriched by) the meta-narrative of Damien Chazelle.
Chazelle started out in the film industry as a fresh, young face, with a degree of talent that was undeniable. Whiplash and La La Land were huge critical and commercial successes, and La La Land in particular celebrated, and in turn contributed to the cultural appreciation of movie magic.

It’s staggering and heartbreaking the lengths the human mind will go to to deny itself happiness. I’ve lived in the shadow of my mind my entire life, and I think that’s a big part of why I connect to Charlie Kaufman’s work, because he always mines the depths of that power struggle and searches for a way out to the other side.

I appreciate the style and the commitment to the sadistic content, but I just didn’t connect with this the way many others seem to.
It’s hard for me to watch this with any kind of objectivity, because the Try Guys feel like my friends, and this is just us learning more about them and this moment in their lives. That said, I really enjoyed watching this!
