Mirror 1975
not gonna pretend this moved me like it did others. unconventionally structured and measured, which can always be hard to digest in the moment. i thought it was lovingly, intimately, and deeply personal to tarkovsky, but ultimately a poetic attempt that didn't fully resonate with me. the barn burning scene is seared in my mind though. it does have an undeniable signature and atmosphere that lends itself to be nostalgic. one thing is for sure, mirrors can't be real since our eyes aren't real.

jarmusch does it again. a dark and silly story, elevated by the slickness of black and white. three movies at once play together into one, each character representing a similar but different personality and genre. tom waits fits more of a bluesy sad-sack type, john lurie a noir-ish gangster type, and roberto benigni the foreign comedic relief. they all find themselves in prison together and while they seemingly clash at first, it blossoms into a definite friendship. there's a lot…

The Straight Story 1999
incredible. the best disney movie i've ever seen. it helped immensely not knowing what this movie was about.

Supermarket Woman 1996
mrs. inoue's monologue rivals paul atriedes. she's the real lisan al gaib. it's perfection. had the biggest laugh from me when the dude in the parking lot started throwing all the baskets from his trunk. i cannot recommend this movie enough. it's pure silliness, wonderfully shot with a whimsical score and a resilient narrative. this is the type of movie to bring you to a good mood instantaneously.
