An important insight into the tragic reality of the lives of many immigrants and asylum seekers in the West with a great performance from Abou Sangare. This is a tense film laced with despair as you watch a man get crushed by the inhumane machinations of the immigration system while being exploited by those around him.

I never really liked this film as much as most people did mainly because I couldn't connect with it's emotional core, but for some reason this rewatch moved me. It's still not Nolan's best IMO but it's a great ride nonetheless.

On a formal level, this is near flawless - it's genuinely one of the best looking films in years with a great score to match. Some great performances in here too, specifically from Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones.

It peters out a bit in the second half however, failing to wrap up the film in a truly satisfying manner despite the fact it's 3 hours and a half long including an epilogue (although pacing isn't an issue). That's probably why it falls short of other contemporary American epics such as Oppenheimer and There WIll Be Blood that it so wants to be like.

Such a well-paced, well shot and well acted film. Old men politicking and scheming in dark hallways and grand halls with high ceilings is absolutely my kind of shit.

It also has the ballsiest twist ending I've seen in years. I know the online discourse surrounding it over the next few weeks will be interesting to say the least.
