A poignant, wonderfully subversive feminist exploration of family and womanhood. This movie is a deeply uncomfortable consideration of how women perform beauty, femininity and sexuality. Fat Girl blends the binary of familial love and deep resentment in a way that is painfully familiar. The ending was brutal, yet somehow perfectly fitting. This is one of the very few examples in which sexual violence can be used effectively in a plot without being gratuitous. Perhaps 'enjoyment' is the wrong word to describe what I felt watching this beautiful, disgusting film - but it was excellent.
