The Zone of Interest 2023
Maybe I am privileged because I teach a genocide studies class, but this doesn't advance beyond the obviousness of the central image: an idyll existing on the back of barbarity. It's best executed with the sound design, but the visual storytelling rarely iterates. There are some interesting threads (the mother's storyline, the bedtime stories) but nothing is committed to. It doesn't work as a character study of the Höss family, it's more interested in reserved observation of the banal parts of antisemitism and Naziism (which has been thoroughly documented in much more chilling films, documentaries, and books). Somehow a very aggressively average Holocaust film.
