While some of Satoshi Kon’s other works are better at showing the themes of escapism and fantasy, this series does a great job of portraying the reality that society wants to escape from. The way that evil, fear, and paranoia are treated here remind me of Twin Peaks and especially Suicide Club.

Everyone here is weird (in a good way). Even the movie’s colors are odd but beautiful.

It’s crazy that something so personal to Kitano can be so universal. After a motorcycle crash he calls “an unconcious suicide attempt” that partially paralyzed his face, Kitano began to paint. He would release this movie three years later in which all of the paintings are his.

This movie understands that making a biopic about Dylan is nearly impossible; he can’t be defined. Instead, it tries to capture his mythos through six unrelated characters. While none of these characters are actually Dylan, they each represent various aspects of his persona and the masks he put on in society. Ultimately, Todd Haynes seems to say that a person is just a collection of the various contradictions within them and the many ways they are perceived.

There’s a high barrier to entry for this movie because of all the references to his music but this is a must watch for any fans of Bob Dylan.
