how on earth did I rate this a THREE last time??? delusion of the highest order.
feels like words are so unnecessary in describing this film when others have done it justice - instead I will simply say that I somehow forget how good laurence fishburn onscreen everytime I watch him in anything. it *should* feel like he's playing the same character over and over but he does something almost imperceptible in every role that changes it entirely. completely in awe.

a really gorgeous looking, thought provoking coming of age - the parallel of the mantis shedding its skin before qinzhe was ready, and the other coming to terms either qinzhe’s identity (and his transformation into an adult with his own autonomy externalised in the peeling of his own skin - something every other character can see before qinzhe himself realises)
and YET, in his confusion, he calls out to his mum for comfort, even when their relationship is at its most ambiguous. and she answers.
zhanfei song is absolutely going to be a director on my radar from now on
