Ladies of Leisure 1930
There is a moment in this movie where Ralph Graves brings a blanket to a sleeping Barbara Stanwyck that really got to me. Her reaction to that was incredible. I loved that moment, but Stanwyck’s range of emotion is really something to behold throughout the entire thing. She goes from comedic powerhouse to emotionally lovestruck effortlessly. It’s too bad this movie had an emotionless blob as her counterpart, because I think it’s the main thing keeping it from being great.

Something was off about this movie. On the surface, I think that the rape of Nanking from a Chinese perspective would make for an interesting movie. It’s a horrifying event that is glossed over in western history, and I thought that Christian Bale’s character was a good stand-in for American’s in general.
