    The flashback structure is muddled and undercuts the impact of some of its early emotional moments. Claire Danes is really good and I've never been knocked out by her. Not enough Ormond, Strathairn, or O'Hara.

    Mostly boring and on the nose. Looked awful in parts and, I mean no disrespect, but I don't find Nicholas Hoult compelling. This is coming from someone who usually delightfully devours any courtroom drama I can get.

    It's exactly what it should be. A great adaptation of the character Hammett created put into a sleepy European town mystery. Owen is an excellent Spade and delivers Franks frank dialogue with the confidence and mistrust it requires. I just wish he had let some gray into his hair instead of going full dye job.
