Short Cuts 1993
I usually love Altman so much but I was a little disappointed by this one… the characters felt much more caricatured and the little naturalistic gems that usually make his work shine were few and far between. Every scene was like a recapitulation of what we already knew about who/what we were watching, so instead of the movie feeling immersive and colorful it just felt… long. Many of the characters were also irredeemably unlikable which made me sad for humanity…

There was a lot of potential in this film that kind of got squashed for me by the ending(s). Wish they had tried harder to find a more natural narrative resolution—perhaps by embracing the fact that there was no resolution for this family for a long time, and depicting or gesturing to that instead of putting a bow on the story in compressed movie time.

I went out into the hallway and literally fainted on the movie theater floor 20 min into this… the staff at the theater told me I was the 5th person to do this at the exact same point in the film since they started playing it. So basically, it rocked.
