    The Electric State

    ★★

There are some moments of true melancholy and emotion that evoke the striking source material but otherwise The Electric State plays it very safe. With the talent behind and in front of the screen, it's disheartening to see a by the numbers story that admittedly does the bare minimum to be serviceable but never emotionally fulfilling or gripping. Themes and character motivations are obvious and surface level without much depth afforded to it. A shame as there are some attempts at talking about the fragility of human connection which don't go anywhere.

A perfect movie. Hyperbolic perhaps but no less true. This adaptation of the classic tale is an epic odyssey, charting the story of Edmond Dantes on his quest for justice...or vengeance and how this singular focus has left him hollow and more of a shell of a man than when he was imprisoned. Grand on the biggest scale possible in film while intimately charting the course of one man's entire life, Christopher Nolan has crafted and directed one his most human and naturalistic films to date with Oppenheimer. Led by a commanding performance from Cillian Murphy, the film chronicles an important turning point in human history in an objective manner that never fails to highlight all aspects, flaws and triumphs both. Combined with outstanding editing and flawless visuals, what on paper is a…

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

    ★★½

It could use some trimming and some characters will need to be worked on moving forward but ultimately The Secrets of Dumbledore can qualify as a return to form for the fantastic beasts franchise and for fans who ultimately felt its predecessor was a letdown. Director David Yatess strength lies in the political machinations and maneuvering and paranoia of politics and it is bolstered by Mads Mikkelsen's sinister Grindelwald. Where the film relies on the eponymous beasts that it can…
