NY77: The Coolest Year in Hell 2007
Such a fascinating time in history. The cultural significance of this era is incredible, but contrasted against the hardships of the time brings to question if the great art created in this time was a result of the hardship of it’s more of an coincidence. It’s depressing to think about how overly corporatized, sanitary, and nostalgic our world is now and how that’s effected arts and culture. New York in the 70s was dangerous and dirty, but also exciting; I would do anything to go to Studio 54.

I love how much you can tell that this film was directed by a woman. I see the core theme of the film as performance. She’s literally an up and coming singer/performer and sees various street performers on the streets of Paris. On a more deeper level, the film is about the performance of femininity and womanhood- the nails, the polka dots, wig, stage name.
