  Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003

  This movie definitely holds up. This watch felt a little long, but Verbinski really reveals a mastery of the bait-and-switch consistently defying audience expectations. One of my favorite examples of an epic character introduction was Captain Jack majestically sailing in to port, on a sinking dinghy.

  I really do like a lot of this, but I can't get over how the pacing of Defying Gravity is ruined in this version and rather anticlimactic because of it. The song naturally builds emotion and tension, but this version cuts it up for action, and unintentionally creates opportunities for audience drift. There's far too much happening to appreciate what is really happening with the characters choosing alternative paths.

  It's a simple movie, but fun nonetheless. I'm thankful my daughter has a cool female Jedi to look up too, though I wish she had more character flaws to make her heroic moments more punchy. Ahsoka is still the better written of the two, but it's nice to know that there are options.
