Seeing this movie for the first time was a magical experience. I think all the praise it’s getting is merited. Do I think it would stand up to a rewatch? No. It feels a bit too slow to go back to. I’m excited for the next one, but I’m not sure I’ll need to revisit this movie again. I’m still of the opinion the whole story could have been told in a single film.

This movie is the LeBron James of doing jack shit. To paraphrase my roommate, this is a movie that thinks it’s so cool, but in actuality is incredibly pretentious. The jump scares are the most early 2000s flash game jump scares I’ve ever seen in a movie, but in order to even get to them you have to sit through 45 minutes of static shots overstaying their welcome.

Why was this movie actually good? Why was it better than the original? Why did it have a stronger message? Why did they do that shit at the end? Why?

When I watched this for the first time, did I need to look up a video essay about this to make sure I didn’t miss anything? Yes. This is the kind of film that you’re not gonna get until you get through a few watches, but that’s precisely what’s so great about it. Every time I watch this movie, I get something new from it. No two watches are the same. It’s a deliciously abstract film that I have a million different readings of.
