  It’s kinda obvious now to compare this with How to Blow Up a Pipeline but whatever … While How to Blow Up a Pipeline is hyper specific and (cleverly) details all its characters’ motivations and politics and relationships, the characters’ motivations in Nocturama are much more ambiguous and, at times, seemingly purposeless. I think the “blow shit up because what else are we gonna do” aspect of Nocturma is a bit more interesting and leaves a lot more to think…

  There’s obviously a lot to say about this movie, but … If you need an epilogue to recap the main character’s life and existence and spell out the meaning of everything the audience has just watched — which has nothing really to do with length but especially after 3 1/2 hours — then you’ve failed somewhere along the way in the storytelling

  On Becoming a Guinea Fowl 2024

  This story is full of complex characters and decisions and motivations. There is so much here to think about because the story is so rich. Rungano Nyoni is such a great writer (she also has an amazing taste in music). It’s crazy how much she can pack into essentially just 90 mins. Susan Chardy also gives a calm and subtle but powerful performance.

  Go see this if you can in the theater, and also watch I Am Not a Witch (which is on Muuuuubi)
