The Umbrellas of Cherbourg 1964
Post-war French paradise lost, but ultimately regained. Swarthy mechanic falls in love with 17 year old daughter of umbrella shop owner, only to be sent off to Algiers. By the time he returns she's married with a child of another man who helped her mother out of debt, so he opts for the next best thing: the caretaker of his now dead aunt. He opens a gas station with his pension, as one does. History forced them to capitulate in their desires, and they were comfortably rewarded by doing so. Both couples naming their children Francois suggests these compromises might be necessary to achieve national stability.
