Dear Mrs. Cooper,

I was suprised to get a letter from someone from my mama's hometown. What with my family's rather sordid history there.

You do know what they say about me, right?

I was born of the union of my poor earthly mama and the Devil himself. They say he came to her in the wee twilight hours, promising a life away from toiling in the dirt and living off naught but rice and beans for her meals. They say mama took Old Scratch up on his offer to escape granddaddy's moonshine rages and grandmama's weeping spells, and in so doing, my mama, God rest her poor soul, doomed your little town proper.

That's what they say.

OC Musical Tag

Thanks to @noblebs for tagging me here!

Rules: Share 1-3 songs you feel best embody a character from your WIP/s, either in general or at this moment in the plot.

I'm going to do this one for my snake boy Hartim because I feel like I haven't talked about him a hot minute, which is weird. I miss him 😭

It ain't the letting go, it's more about the things that you take with
Uh-uh
And I can feel it getting closer with every kiss
You gotta beat or join them
Try to act surprised
Just flip a coin 'cause I'm too bored to lie

[...]

Always said, "I should work on my escape"
Have a heart too long, it's bound to break
Acting out the opus of your last eternal ache
Boy, just sing the song for heaven's sake

Do you hear me through your speakers?
So much distance, space between us
Say you're dreamin', and I've been too
And no one knows what you been through
And I been thinkin' a little deeper
Contemplation, gettin' cleaner
See no leaders, need more teachers
I'm in shambles, I don't sleep much

Life don't stop the more we pray
All your wrongs from yesterday
Smokin' Himalayan haze
Won't wash all your sins away

You've lost (too much love)
To fear, doubt and distrust (not enough)
You just threw away the key (to your heart)
You don't get burned ('cause nothing gets through)
It makes it easier (easier on you)
But that much more difficult for me
To make you see

Love ain't fair
So there you are, my love

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense, but I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this

Unorthodox Ship Tag

I was tagged by @the-letterbox-archives thank you!

Rules: post five overly specific ship dynamics for characters in your story

I will use 17 of the confirmed romantic relationships within my various WIPs (I have discounted several for the purpose of this game, we won't worry about it). How many can you guess?

  1. When I Say Enemies To Lovers I Mean They Didn't Even Hook Up Until One Of Them Had Murdered The Other One (if you've been here long enough, you know exactly who this is)
  2. There might or might not be (there is) something very important about my identity that I should really, probably, definitely, tell you. (This applies to 6 of them)
  3. War prize to lovers (this applies to 2 of them for real, 3 if you squint, and 5 if the person in question doesn't have to be a war prize of the person they end up with)
  4. Look at me and the bad bitch I pulled by being the most annoying person on the face of the earth a.k.a. Bastard x Bastard Enabler (this applies to 10 of them)
  5. Maybe we are starcrossed lovers, but that's a problem for Future Me, wait, what you mean the consequences of my decisions are knocking at the door? (this applies to 6 of them)

In the end, only 2 of the ships that I originally wrote down didn't end up applying to any of these!

We will give them a bonus and call them Soft and Warm like Mashed Potatoes

I'm tagging @sparrow-orion-writes @outpost51 @bloodlessheirbyjacques @unclear-contributions @magefaery

and anyone else who has a decent number of ships and would like to do it!

martina Roscoe in marta and the diner

  1. Due to her relationship with time, Marta noticed she could stop time at a very young age. However, by doing so, sometimes she’d get stuck in a time loop. This scared her and her mother whenever she came out of the time loop. This was no surprise to her mother though, since her father’s brother was gifted with the same ability and he could stop time and occasionally travel through it. But she was still worried she’d lose Marta to a time loop. Something that they avoided by having Marta take pills to numb her powers down. The issue was, instead of eliminating the problem, the problem became worse and she ended up time traveling. So, Marta ended up being taught how to control her ability a little better by her uncle.

Luna Rosano in ‘all these things’

  1. Luna is a fake party psychic who actually turns out to be a real psychic. Only issue is she doesn’t realize this until she’s in a situation where she has to use her psychic ability to prove that she’s psychic to get out of a situation she put herself in where she lied about being psychic. Which is a whole situation. But she ends up saving herself from getting got, because she actually was psychic the whole time, she just didn’t know it. She just had to tap into the ability in a near death situation.

Cassian Barakzai in 'magically inclined’

  1. She owns a cursed objects shop. since a lot of the time she goes about retrieving cursed objects for people, she sorta just took it upon herself to open up a shop where she doesn’t really sell the objects unless she undoes their curses. and even then she gets good business because people just like spooky stuff.

On feedback and comments

So a couple of days ago I found Scribophile (by searching 'nanowrimo alternatives' bc jesus christ what is going on over there) and signed up. The system they have is a fairly good exchange: you critique others work to build up karma, and then once you've built enough karma you can post your own writing for critique. Nice little cycle.

So I've been offering critiques here and there, and finally today managed to hit enough karma to post my own work, so I posted the Prequel to The Nameless - there are a few small bits in there that I'm not happy with, but I can't quite put my finger on why.

it's been up about 6 hours, and it's already had 7 critiques, all of which raise some excellent points, while also being encouraging and respectful.

It only took 1 critique for my writing apathy to start slipping away, for the dreaded writer's block to crumble. 7 critiques has me positively champing at the bit to create and edit and finish the damn work!

Please, if you like what your writer is doing:

Comment.

Only critique if that's what's been invited, but honestly, so much interaction on just one piece of work has cleared my skin, watered my crops, brought about world peace, and I am writing again!!
