Hi there, I would say that it's better to get your grammar down first, so that you can think of sentences to say in you head. It's important to focus on spoken English as well, since there are some exceptions to grammar rules. Reading out what you write helps to make sure that it sounds right. You can ask native speakers, What's a more natural way to say this? How do I say ... ? etc etc

He was able to speak English even before he got here

A: I need to stay in practice with my English, or else my skills become rusty.
Rusty is a term which means out-of-use, and English-speakers often use it to describe some skill that they are beginning to lose due to lack of practice. This is not exactly what you wrote, but I am giving you a suggestion only. Hope it helps!
