Abstract Does diversity beget the active dissemination of social support in the form of advice to others? Previous research by Robert Putnam suggests that individuals in compositionally diverse geographical areas become closed off from their social ties and less trusting of others, which are both antithetical to social support exchange. We argue, however, that studies of compositional diversity are ill-suited to reflect diversity as it is actually lived and experienced in social life.

Family conflict has been found to play a role in caregivers' psychological well-being; however, few studies have considered race differences in the prevalence and consequences of caregiving conflict. In this paper, we use mixed-methods to examine differences in the experiences of conflict among Black and White adult children caring for mothers. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 279 adult-child caregivers (213 White; 66 Black). Multilevel modeling revealed that conflict with mothers predicted depressive symptoms among Black, but not White caregivers, whereas there were not statistically significant race differences in the effects of conflict with siblings. However within-model tests showed stronger effects of conflict with mothers than siblings for Black caregivers, and stronger effects of conflict with siblings than mothers for White caregivers. In this article, we compare predictors of mothers' differentiation among their adult children regarding emotional closeness, pride, conflict, and disappointment. We distinguish between predictors of relational (closeness, conflict) and evaluative (pride, disappointment) dimensions of favoritism and disfavoritism. Multilevel modeling using data collected from 381 older mothers regarding their relationships with 1,421 adult children indicated that adult children's similarity of values played the most prominent role in predicting mothers' favoritism and disfavoritism, followed by children's gender. Scholarship has highlighted the importance of kin relations for well-being in adulthood. Much focus has been on relationships between spouses and between parents and children. However, limited research has explored the role of adult sibling relationships in well-being, and no studies have made direct comparisons among the effects of tension with these multiple family members. Using data collected from 495 adult children nested within 254 families, we examined the differential impact of tension with mothers, siblings, and spouses on depressive symptoms in midlife. Separate multi-level regression analyses showed that tension with spouses, mothers, and siblings each predicted depressive symptoms. Combined analyses revealed that greater tension with spouses was associated with higher depressive symptoms, but tension with mothers and siblings was not. However, Wald tests comparing the strength of these associations between tension and depressive symptoms indicated that these associations did not significantly vary across family members. Interactions with gender indicated that tension with mothers was more strongly associated with higher depressive symptoms for women than men. These findings highlight the importance of the quality of relationships with family members on individuals' psychological well-being, and call for researchers to consider multiple ties and gender when examining family relationships and well-being.

This study explores cross-cultural variations in adult children's perceptions of maternal favoritism during caregiving in Turkey and the United States. Qualitative analysis of interview data from two siblings in each of 14 Turkish and 14 American families revealed differences in adult children's perceptions of and explanations for maternal favoritism. Most Turkish children perceived that their mothers favored sons because of higher filial expectations from sons. Conversely, most American children perceived that their mothers favored daughters and explained mothers' preferences as based on socioemotional factors. Furthermore, perceptions of maternal favoritism had detrimental consequences for sibling relationships in both contexts but differently. Bu makale, Covid-19 pandemisinin mahalle düzeyinde nasıl deneyimlendiğini muhtarların gözünden irdelemektedir. Çalışmada, pandemi deneyiminin ve pandeminin yerel yönetişiminin, farklı sosyal kırılganlıklara sahip mahallelerde farklılaşan ve benzeşen yönlerinin, muhtarların gözünden anlaşılması hedeflenmektedir. Makalede kullanılan veriler, Ístanbul ilinin farklı sosyal kırılganlık seviyesine sahip 4 ilçesinin farklı mahallelerinde görev yapan 20 muhtar ile çevrimiçi uygulamalar üzerinden gerçekleştirilmiş yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşmelere dayanmaktadır. COVID-19 pandemisiyle birlikte toplumun çeşitli katmanlarında yadsınamaz değişimler yaşanmıştır. Koronavirüsün sağlık üzerindeki etkisinin yanında, pandeminin kendini en çok hissettirdiği alanlardan birisi de ekonomi olmuştur. Tüm dünyada, pandemiyle birlikte yaşanan kapanmalar ve alınan önlemler ile sağlık sektörünün üstlendiği yük ile birlikte milli ekonomiler de büyük hasar almıştır. Bu makale, COVID-19 pandemisinin ülke bazındaki ekonomik etkilerini anlamlandırmanın ötesine geçerek bu etkileri hane bazında anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Çiftler arasında hane içi ve bakım işlerinin eşitsiz paylaşımı, feminist kuramsal ve ampirik çalışmaların uzun süredir sorunsallaştırdığı konulardan biri olagelmiştir. Bu çalışmalarda, hane içi toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliğinin temelini oluşturan karşılıksız emeğin fiziksel yani eylem boyutuna odaklanılmış, zihinsel boyutuna yeterince ilgi gösterilmemiştir. Nitekim Türkiye’de de zihinsel yük üzerine herhangi bir çalışmanın mevcut olmadığı görülmektedir. Bu açığı kapatmak adına, bu çalışmada, pratikte eylemi kimin gerçekleştirdiğinin ötesine geçilerek çiftler arasında çeşitli ev işlerinin zihinsel yük boyutunun ne şekilde paylaşıldığı, niceliksel araştırma yöntemi kullanılarak sorgulanmıştır. Ankara’daki bir vakıf üniversitesinde çalışan personele uygunluk örneklemi yöntemiyle uygulanan anket çalışmasında, çeşitli ev içi eylemlerinin hem düşünme hem de planlama/organize etme boyutlarına dair hem kendileri hem de partnerlerine yönelik diyadik (ikili) bilgi toplanmıştır. Uygulanan nicel analizler sonucunda, çalışmada, zihinsel yükün daha sık ve ağır bir biçimde kadınlar tarafından üstlenildiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma, hane içi emeğin paylaşımında var olan toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliklerine odaklanan akademik çalışmalarda ve sosyal politikalarda, zihinsel yük boyutunun dikkate alınmasının önemini ve gereğini ortaya koymaktadır.

Yaşam sürelerindeki artışla birlikte ebeveynler ve çocuklarının
birlikte daha uzun yıllar geçirmesi, kuşaklararası bağların her iki
kuşağın iyiliğinde önemli bir rol sahibi olmasını sağlamaktadır.
Bir diğer yandan, ebeveyn-yetişkin çocuk arasındaki kuşaklararası
destek alışverişi özellikle nüfusta ve aile yapısındaki değişimlerle
biçimlenmekte ve karmaşıklaşmaktadır. Her ne kadar yaşlılık dönemi
yetişkin çocuklardan bakıma muhtaç yaşlı ebeveynlere doğru artan
destek akışı ile bağdaştırılsa da yapılan çalışmalar dulluk ve muhtaçlık
dışında ebeveynlerin çocuklarına yetişkinlikten sonra da destek
sağlamaya devam ettiklerini göstermektedir. Bu nitel çalışmanın
temel amacı, ebeveynlerin yetişkin çocuklarına verdikleri desteğin
mekanizmalarını incelemektir. Bu çalışmanın verileri, 21 anne ve 15
baba ile yapılan derinlemesine görüşmelerden elde edilmiştir. Aile içi
farklılıkları analiz etmek için ebeveynlerden yetişkin çocuklarının her
birine sağladıkları destek hakkında kapsamlı veri toplanmıştır. Analizler
ışığında, ebeveynlerin yetişkin çocuklara maddi ve çocuk bakımı destek
mekanizmalarında üç eşitsizlik örüntüsü ortaya konmuştur: anne ve
babalar arasındaki eşitsizlik, aynı ailedeki çocuklar arasındaki eşitsizlik
ve farklı sosyoekonomik seviyeye sahip aileler arasındaki eşitsizlik.
Bu çalışma, kuşaklararası destek mekanizmalarındaki eşitsizlikleri
inceleyerek hem yazına hem de kuşaklararası dayanışmayı hedef alan
sosyal politikalara bir katkı sunmayı amaçlamaktadır.

Her ne kadar yaşlı nüfusu genel nüfusa oranla daha hızlı yaşlanıyor olsa da, Türkiye henüz 'yaşlı' nüfusa sahip ülkeler listesinde yer almamaktadır. Keza bir ülkenin nüfusunun 'yaşlı' olarak kabul edilmesi için, toplam nüfusunun %15'nin 65 yaş üstü bireylerden oluşması gerekmektedir ve Türkiye'de bu oran 2019 itibariyle %9,1'dir 1. Nitekim, yaşlıların durumunun araştırılması ve ihtiyaçlarının gündeme taşınması için toplumun yaşlanmasının beklenmesi gerekmemektedir. İster yaşlı, ister genç bir nüfusu olsun, her toplumun bünyesindeortalama yaşam süresi çok düşük ülkeler de dahil olmak üzere-'yaşlı' kabul edilen bir nüfus mutlaka bulunmaktadır. Dolayısıyla nüfusun geneline oranı ne olursa olsun, bu 'yaşlı' grubun diğer yaş gruplarına nazaran farklılık gösteren ihtiyaçlarından ve toplumdaki statüsünden bahsetmek mümkündür. The original paper investigates the emergence of AI research as a distinctive phenomenon of spirituality, in particular the evident reliance of 1st generation AI scientists on concepts of belief and transcendental, spiritual concepts of being. Although AI scientists and theorists quite often overtly disavow the spiritual element of this configuration, this element is nonetheless evident in both the justifications and meanings ascribed to AI research and in the operational technologies. In this sense, all of the above mentioned elements converge in the work (technical and conceptual) of AI scientists, suggesting a type of spiritual culture in the modern world. In sum, a critical analysis of AI from this perspective will offer a novel way to value modern practice and phenomenon and provide a unique perspective on broader research values in religious studies. I wish also to retain the more specific orientation regarding spirituality and modernity evident in the work of religious studies scholars; therefore the intended outcome of my own research would be to contribute both concrete empirical data and a critical analysis of this data that illuminates the persistence and diversity of religious experience in the present. Thus, by simultaneously contributing to a better understanding of how the study of emergent spiritualities and religious movements cannot be limited to secularized categories, frameworks, and taxonomies that would posit humanistic science as a domain entirely distinct from the religious, I am seeking to provide some illumination as to the nature of spirituality in contemporary society.

Through the lens of the life, death and ideas of Alan Turing (1912-1954), the “Father of Computer Science”, this paper aims at exploring the sacredness and significance of the re-invented self.
Turing’s life was ended by himself after a criminal prosecution for his sexuality. For homosexuals in the 1950s, the deprivation was not only one of laws but also of the spirit – a denial of identity. From a historical-comparative perspective, the ideas of Turing’s abstract machine intelligence seem to have been driven by problems of being, in particular mortality, human uniqueness and self recognition. Choosing Turing as a case study for a new methodology - biographical spirituality, helps to account for the “metatheoretical” discussion of “life”.Despite the increasing prominence of theories regarding human enhancement technologies, the very idea behind is largely under-explored. At the same time scholars of religion tend to interpret a more complex understanding of spirituality as straightforward secularisation or de-traditional, alternative spiritual praxis. As a result, there remains a huge disembodied and disengaged area in
how we conceptualise ourselves. Individual forms of life are never accomplished on account of human life per se, rather, I argue, it always points at a genuine creation of self-knowledge.

This book is chiefly concerned with Hegel’s religious view in the face of politics and social transformations. Accordingly, concepts regarding an individual’s place in time and space (society), which constitute the conceptualisation and function of religion are carefully examined (e.g., Chapter 4, 5 & 6). Rapid and interrelated changes in intellectual, social and political life challenged religion’s justification, its ethical value, and its role in providing social cohesion (p. 1). What is fascinating is that Lewis suggests that Hegel’s philosophy of religion also offers some special insight into recent debates about the cognitive science of religion from the perspective of Hegelian philosophy.
