The paper deals with the definition of urban mobility, assuming that inside the city, the flow of... more The paper deals with the definition of urban mobility, assuming that inside the city, the flow of mobility is deeply connected with the distribution, quality and use of the urban activities that “polarize” different users (residents, commuters, tourists and city users). In this vision, ICT assume a strategic role, but the need to reconsider their role emerges in respect to the concept of a smart city. The consideration that “urban smartness” does not depend exclusively on the ICT component or on the quantitative presence of technologies in the city, in fact, represents a shared opinion within the current scientific debate on the subject of the smart city. The paper assumes that, for the present urban contexts, the smart vision has to be related to an integrated approach, which considers the city as a complex system. Inside the urban system, the networks for both material and immaterial mobility interact with the urban activities that play a supporting role and have characteristics that affect the levels of urban smartness. Changes in urban systems greatly depend on the sorts of innovation technology that have intensely modified the social component to a far greater extent than others. Big Data, for instance, can help with knowledge of urban processes, provided they have to be well-interpreted and managed, and this will be of interest within the interactions among urban systems and the functioning of the system as a whole. Town planning has to take on responsibility in regard to approaching cities according to a different vision and updating its tools in order to steer the urban system steadfastly into a smartness state. In a systemic vision, this transition must be framed within the context of a process of governmental transformation that is carefully oriented towards the individuation of interactions among the different subsystems composing the city. According to this vision, the study of urban mobility can be related to the attractiveness generated by the different urban functions. The formalization of the degree of polarization, activated by urban functions, represents the main objective of this study. Among the urban functions, the study considers tourism as one of the most significant in the formalization of urban mobility flow inside the smart city.

In recent years, Augmented Reality has gained interest both for being a technology that offers ma... more In recent years, Augmented Reality has gained interest both for being a technology that offers many possibilities of interaction with mobile devices (smartphone and tablet) and for its potentialities of being used in outside contexts. The recent transition of Augmented Reality from the virtual context of the Video Games -within an indoor ambiance- to the real urban space -within an outside ambiance- is providing new perspectives for urban planning processes, as a result. Referring to this transition, the paper tries to investigate the possibilities of proposing a new view for the urban planning process taking into account the potentialities of the recent applications of the Augmented Reality. At the same time, the paper wonders on the possibility of new perspectives that the Augmented Reality can offer to the research in the sector of the town planning. Using a methodology based on a systemic approach, the paper intends to underline the relations existing between urban subsystems and the use of technology. In these relations, the social subsystem plays a central role, as its components (people living and using the city) can improve the urban smartness by the adoption of responsible and aware behaviors. AR applications in the fi eld of the game (e.g. the phenomenon of PokemonGo) has shown how people are willing to be involved in new ways of fruition of urban spaces as long as they can use their mobile devices and they can share their own experiences on the social networks. This attitude can be properly taken into account within the process of urban governance both to improve the participative procedures and to explore new paths for the aware use of technologies. These innovative research dimensions should be explored carefully and quickly, considering the possible contribution of these values to the urban smartness.

The paper presents an innovative way of conceiving the museum exhibit particularly useful in thos... more The paper presents an innovative way of conceiving the museum exhibit particularly useful in those territorial contexts in which it is possible to simultaneously show the place of discovery of the exhibit n (contextualizing it through the virtual reproduction of the historical scenario) and the find itself adding to this the possibility of narrating one’s own history and characteristics. The entire meta-project is designed for the Pietraroja site in the province of Benevento which would acquire considerable cultural interest thanks to the potential of augmented and mixed reality. The main idea is to use this new technology to involve the user (observer) by rebuilding the environment and the peculiarities of the finds. The perception of the augmented elements will be possible by design a specific application for smartphone that everyone gets in its pocket.

The Covid-19 pandemic hastened the use of technologies that replaced some urban activities, norma... more The Covid-19 pandemic hastened the use of technologies that replaced some urban activities, normally based on people interactions, thus significant changes occurred in mobility demand. Recently, also in Italy, for urban short-distance travels, "non-conventional" ways of moving spread, encouraged by governmental measures addressed to sustainable mobility, too. Defined as "urban micro-mobility" including e-scooters, these modalities of moving had a significant success, producing impacts on mobility and urban safety. This study focuses on the analysis of the spread of e-scooters use in Italy, relating both to the pandemic event and to the post-emergency phase. Specifically, this study is articulated into three parts: 1) the overview on urban micro-mobility particularly referred to the use of e-scooters in Italy; 2) the results of direct surveys (questionnaires) addressed to the undergraduate students, considered as a significant age range; 3) the effectiveness of these "alternative mobility" to improve urban sustainability.

Originating from the main theories on the interpretation of the city as a system, this paper call... more Originating from the main theories on the interpretation of the city as a system, this paper calls attention to the need to build a new theoretical framework. This framework would be able to support actions related to the consideration of ecosystem services in the activities governing urban and territorial transformations. By adopting the systemic interpretation of the city, it may be possible to more readily identify the ecosystem services related to each of the urban subsystems, and promote a new and different consideration of them when defining urban policies on the sustainable management of urban and territorial systems. The Covid-19 pandemic event has produced an acceleration in the use of technological innovation w... more The Covid-19 pandemic event has produced an acceleration in the use of technological innovation which, in some cases, has substituted some urban activities usually carried out through direct interaction between people. The restrictions on mobility, the collapse of tourism and the spread of teleworking have produced important effects on the demand for mobility at urban, extra-urban and international level. Collective transport was penalized, as considered unsafe for contagion. Policies were mainly oriented at reducing the service capacity to mitigate the theoretical crowding on board rather than increasing the number of vehicles. So, the transport services just worked because the demand for the LPT naturally decreased out of fear of contagion. Alternatively, for short distance in urban areas" non-conventional" modes of travel have been spreading, also encouraged by some governmental measures. The spread of “urban micro-mobility” systems including the supply of e-scooters has had an immediate impact. Beginning with these considerations, this study proposes an analysis of the spread of e-scooters in Italian cities starting from the pandemic event, with the aim of verifying their effectiveness even in the post-emergency phase. With this aim, the study is divided into three parts. The first part offers an overview on the theme of urban micro-mobility particularly referring to the use of e-scooters in Italian cities. The second part illustrates the results of direct surveys carried out through questionnaires addressed to a specific range of users, the undergraduate students, considered as a highly significant age range. In the conclusions, some initial considerations are proposed to define the contribution of these "new modes of travelling" in the city to the whole urban sustainability. The final objective of the study is the foreshadowing of possible recommendations to improve the integration between mobility planning and governance of urban transformations. © 2022 The Authors. La città e il territorio, interpretati come sistemi dinamicamente complessi, sono sempre esposti ... more La città e il territorio, interpretati come sistemi dinamicamente complessi, sono sempre esposti a rischi derivanti da eventi naturali o dall’insediamento non corretto di specifiche attività a elevata vulnerabilità. Lo smaltimento dei rifiuti solidi urbani (RSU), da tempo, è stato individuato da studiosi, city managers e amministratori come uno dei principali nodi problematici con ricadute sul sistema di gestione e sul funzionamento generale delle città. Il volume, approfondendo la tematica del “rifiuto urbano”, propone una procedura basata su determinazioni tecnico–scientifiche, in grado di supportare il decisore pubblico nel processo di individuazione dei territori che presentino caratteristiche tali da renderli idonei e/o preferibili per la localizzazione di una struttura impiantistica complessa per il trattamento dei RSU. La procedura metodologica proposta può essere adottata per la scelta ubicativa di altre funzioni con analoghi livelli di impatto per il sistema territoriale interessato.
