Man I forgot how much I love Tennessee Williams. He’s always like: ooooh it’s so hot in the south. there’s an angry man in your house. diva off. somebody’s gay. and it slaps. Every. Single. Time.
lets settle this properly
I have a theory

Sometimes you have to take a step back and remember that same-sex marriage has only been legal in America for ten years.
I know that it seems like it's been this way forever, but when they were leaving it up to the states and Indiana legalized it for a whole 24 hours before Mike Pence got wise to it- me and a bunch of strangers ran around the city hall block with a rainbow flag because we were so happy. People were getting married on the spot because they'd been waiting so long and we didn't know if the ruling was going to stick.
It's wild to think about how much has changed just in my lifetime. Sodomy was a crime until 2003. Don't Ask Don't Tell was both enacted and repealed in my life.
The processes are slower than we want, but in retrospect- a lot has changed since the 90s.
I think it’s easy for a lot of Gen Alpha to forget that so many of the freedoms that are in limbo right now, are only recently won.
I’m old enough to remember when “Friends” had an entire episode where the punchline was that Joey carried a crossbody bag and everyone bagged on him for carrying a “purse”. Because it wasn’t “manly”. Because teeing off on something so small and simple was just seen as Thursday night entertainment and nothing else.
Of the things we have begun to outgrow, that is perhaps the most innocuous example, but it still very telling. The discourse surrounding Matthew Shepard for a long, long time was,
“how could he have prevented this?”
Not
“How could anyone do this?”
We would do well to remember. This is isn’t history. It’s a vivid memory for many of us.
THIS. I sometimes wonder if people think I'm beating this message to death in "after the island," but gay marriage is so important and we've had it for such a short amount of time.
Interview with the Vampire (2022-) Claudia, born 1903. I drank the water in 1917. I’m thirty six years old.
As a visibly disabled person, I relate so deeply to Claudia. The fear that when you're on a date someone will think your girlfriend is your caretaker, feeling trapped in a body which limits you, being fetishised while your own sexuality is demonised, and most of all the ways in which you're infantilised and denied agency, yet expected to be emotionally mature and comfort others upset by the tragedy of your existence.
And going beyond my experiences as a white visibly disabled person, Claudia is so wronged in the ways in which as a Black girl she experiences adultification and then as a Black (disabled) woman she experiences infantilisation in a way that she just absolutely cannot win. In the coven she must be deferential, take on the worst jobs, have a humiliating stage role, is literally called "puce" or "flea", be disdained by everyone around her. In her creation as a teenage girl she must be innocent and happy to be the daughter of the house, yet also have the emotional maturity to never have her own problems and help solve her fathers'. She's always a woman without the respect, and always a girl without the care.
