Steph | she/her | Canada Professional Insomniac Ask and tag game friendly

Writeblr Reintro

Now that I am free from tumblr purgatory, and actually have some free time, I figured I may as well reintroduce myself!

I'm Steph, legal adult and she/they queer living in the mildest climate in Canada. I write pretty much exclusively sci-fi and fantasy, and I fill my casts of characters out with mostly ladies because I am really tired of hearing about dudes! I have five main WIPs I'm rotating around in my mind at any given moment:

The Silent Island of Crow intro post A forum RP currently being reworked into book formatting, it's about a bunch of weirdos getting up to shenanigans and dealing with threats from their pasts and elsewhere. Started really juvenile and grew to be more serious in tone, jarringly so, but there's still some interesting kernels in there...

The Island of Crows intro post ...So my best friend and I are taking those kernels and making something that's a little more consistent and in line with where our writing skills are now! Currently in the planning stages, but the core of it will remain the same: A bunch of weirdos getting up to shenanigans on an island they've all been pulled to for one reason or another.

The Starcrossed Cycle intro post The solo adventures of some of the characters I am going to be bringing to the Island of Crows, before they actually get there. Iradurel is a criminal frozen in time, and Ryla is the monster hunter that finds and frees her. The two of them will come to realize that this is not the first time they've been pulled into each other's orbits.

Abyssal Scrutiny intro post Look, I saw Power Rangers at a formative age, so super sentai shit is always at the back of my mind! So this is my take on the genre, where a group of people are granted powers from a mysterious source, in order to fight against eldritch abominations in some sort of parallel realm. Only, as Morgan uncovers, there is more going on than just fighting monsters of the day.

The Moons of Boryarlta intro post This started life with the intent of being a lesbian rewrite of a mecha anime, but has spiralled into an unholy hodgepodge of sci-fi genre nonsense. Stuck in a dead end job just trying to make rent, Cass didn't think she'd ever have the chance to leave her hometown, let alone her planet. But then she's captured and thrown into a gladiator arena on another world, and her life just gets weirder from there.

Beyond those, I have a couple random ideas that are percolating, so I may have more to add in the future. But for on here, I am always down for tag games (lol just late to respond to them!), love to hear about all the weird shit that people are writing about outside of the traditional publishing scene, and reblog a lot of images and words that remind me of my WIPs (I try to keep my tagging system organized). Gimme a follow if any of that sounds like your cup of tea!

lines tag

I'd like to thank @sodaliteskull for the ancient nine lines, nine people tag and @sergeantnarwhalwrites for the heads up 7 up and a separate last line! I'm gonna pass any one of those three challenges (of your choosing) onto @winterandwords , @moltenwrites , @finickyfelix , @daisywords , @kalicofox and anyone else who wants to join in

"Captain, theβ€”" he stopped in his tracks, and his head tilted a little, as if he was trying to work something out. "Sir? Are you okay?"
AJ cleared his throat, trying to rid himself of the last of the fog running through his mind. He recognised the feeling as inebriationβ€” a hazy feeling at the corner of his mind that was blurring his sight ever so slightly and hazing his senses just enough to make it noticeableβ€” but he couldn't recall drinking at all in the last weeks. He wouldn't, not in a time like this... Surely not.
"Yes, quite alright, Harrison. Did you come with news?"
Harrison nodded slowly, finding it hard to ignore something that was clearly going on. "Yes, uh... The stormβ€” the fog, I guess? It's cleared."
He knew this already. The fog had come and gone with his angel, he'd managed to attain that much, but not only that, this feeling of haze had given him an innate understanding, and he could tell without looking that they were once again on clear waters.

So hi! The name is Foyle! Or you can call me D.M. or Dez if you prefer, doesn't really matter to me lol.

As far as writing goes- I've been doing this for a hot minute (sent my first query letter at 15 f'in years old what pluck i had as a child lol), and among my works I can include:

  • A high fantasy novel
  • An Urban Fantasy YA Novel Based on Them Thar Greek Gods
  • And a few other Urban Fantasy Style Novels (because they are fun sue me)

However, more recently I've stepped into a space where sci-fi, hacking, technology, and crime/psychological-thriller all intersect.

Shoot me a note if you want to be on my tag list 🫑

tag game, NINE LINES.

this is probably more than nine lines but we're gonna ignore that, this is a scene from the first draft of cursed bodies that i realised i'm going to cut so i couldn't resist sharing it since it's one of my favourite moments.

But that didn’t mean that he was completely useless. He remembered plenty of mornings when Eli would force him out the window when they dared to sneak around on campus, and thankfully now, being on the first floor, he could do it again. As quietly as he could, he got dressed, tossing his coat out the window, ensuring it landed on a rose bush near the window. He knew that the guilt for leaving would sink in at some point, but it hadn’t happened yet. After putting his shoes on, he returned to the open window, beginning to climb out but stopped halfway through when he saw Eli standing in the garden with Theo’s coat in his arms. It didn’t surprise him all too much that Eli was awake, even back in school, Eli had bad sleeping habits, always being more awake at night and without Theo, would’ve not slept at all most nights. Something that seemed as if hadn’t changed. β€œRunning away, princess?” Eli asked. Theo was almost tempted to climb back inside, but instead he continued and he dropped gracefully onto the grass in front of Eli.

leaving this tag open.

I know I’m an 18th century guy but while we’re on the topic of slutty military wear. the OFF THE SHOULDER HUSSAR JACKETS…… this is straight up provocative

I want to know who started that off-shoulder trend

Who was designing it and saying "fuck yeah, that's a slay"

I don't frankly know which way the inspiration went, but both the detailing on the trousers and the off the shoulder jacket (or a coat) secured by the strap are prominent details of various types of eastern, central European and Balkan folk dress. Those are also the bits of the continent where Hussar regiments originated.

Y'all can mourn the boringification of menswear with me.

@theprissythumbelina Goyan's offical ceremonial dress uniform is basically this ^^^ and I am very proud of that decision

project atlantis ; excerpt

edited a conversation between two of our characters into something passable as an excerpt! this is being cowritten so not all words are mine. context: bonding between two outlaws on the run from the crime syndicate run by mara's father. she used to work as a smuggler traveling between atlantis and earth.

After a moment of pondering, Ry decided to switch topics. They could come back to the discussion of families later. Enough had been said on that for the moment in his opinion.

"You mentioned your mother's family is in Aegina, so I assume you crossed the portal at least twice? What's it really like?

"Oh, I've crossed a number of times," Mara said with a wry laugh. "It's like..."

How to put it into words? The nothing, the everything. The creaking of wood. The pressure in the back of one's mind, so tight you can feel it crawling up your throat. Her visible eye darkened as she thought of it, hunger and fear both.

"It's like nothing else. My mom was afraid of it, that's why she never went back. It fills you up."

Ry shivered as he listened to Mara describe the space between the worlds. He had always wondered what it was like, but had never been brave enough to attempt the crossing. And Mara had done it several times? She was made of stern stuff.

"Do you have any particularly memorable crossings? Any encounters that stood out?"

Mara tilted her head and bit her lip as she thought. Every encounter was memorable, in its own way. In its own, horrifying way. She sorted through her memories, tossing aside anecdotes that might give Ry trouble sleeping the next night.

"Once I thought I saw myself," she said after some time had passed with her limping along. "A rare time in which a group was passing the other way at the same time as us. From Aegina, I think. They all had hoods on, eyes on the groundβ€”the smartest way to do itβ€”but one looked up as they passed. We made eye contact. And I swear... Two preserve me. I swear it was my own face under that hood."

I know most people don't care about anything unless it has to do with the U.S. but can we please start talking about the Canadian election.

Please don't vote for Poilievre. He's basically the Canadian Trump and plans to put in place laws that harm trans youth, and lots of other shit.

Please vote istg this is the only way anything will get better. Poilievre has been kissing millionaires and billionaires asses. He'll make life even harder, and he loves Trump.

Reblogs are appreciated, especially if you aren't Canadian.

Not to be dramatic, but this year sucks!

lol whoops, had a bit of an unplanned hiatus due to a combination of needless work drama that may wind up with half the staff quitting sooner than later (myself included), my best friend's mom unexpectedly dying due to cancer complications, and my own mom having a rough time with her chemotherapy. And that was just in March! Haven't had the bandwidth for creative endeavours with all that nonsense.

I've gotta switch that up, because stressing about things that I have no way of changing ain't it, fam! I need to put my energies into things that will actually bring me joy, so I'm going to make an effort to start doing more artsy fartsy shit to share on here, so expect more noise out of me in the coming days.

And a thanks/apologies to anyone who's tagged me in any games, I'm going to try getting to those as soon as possible!

when character a is barely conscious and being princess carried by character b and when b goes to put them down a whimpers and fists their hand into the fabric of their shirt and b goes shhh shh shh and takes their hand in theirs while gently cradling their head oughhhhhh oughhhhh………….

βš™οΈ, 🀐, πŸŽƒ, πŸ“’, and πŸ₯ͺ for the Fantasy Worldbuilding Ask Game?

Avatar

Thank for the ask!! Took me approximately a million years to actually sit down and work on it... I'll be answering for The Last Lorinean

βš™οΈHow has magic influenced the level and complexity of technology in your WIP?

Honestly, non-magical technology has not progressed very far, even as the strength of magic has faded in the current age. Most technological developments have magic involved in some way. The most advanced non-magical technology can be found in the port cities of Astaire, where magic users are a rarity and those born with magic are persecuted and suppressed. They are on the brink of an industrial revolution, but their population size and relation to the rest of the magical world will likely keep them from tipping in that direction.

🧐Do people research magic in your WIP? What’s the most popular or prestigious topic of study? The least popular?

Researching magic is a bit passΓ© in the current ageβ€”the powerhouses of magical research are found at the Faerien in Kyrania (an academy for training magically proficient faeries to serve the Kyranian priesthood and royal family) and in the city of Pirten in Doel'Dan (one of the two cities in a largely undeveloped country that has become the sanctuary for a lot of exiles).

The Faerien focuses on developing new magic through linguistical exploration (magic is understood to be initially drawn upon by an audible invocation, and careful learning allows one to replicate the feeling of the invocation without speaking), as well as training their students to cast wordlessly as quickly as possible.

In the previous age, magical research was done by the Covens in Astaire. They established a citadel of knowledge, split into five individual covens that studied their preferred schools of magic. The members of the covens were known as witches. The Lorineans specialized in the preservation of magical knowledge, the Simplinds specialized in the creation of and search for magical relics, the Elethides specialized in spell creation, the Canysthems specialized in alchemy and other miscellaneous minor studies, and the Reglares focused on magical theory.

A war began between the covens when the Reglares challenged the ethics of an Elethide witch specializing in the study of necromancy and immortality. This war spanned generations and ended with the continent of Astaire being stripped of its magic via a relic.

πŸŽƒCan otherworldly entities grant people special powers? When do they choose to do so?

Otherworldly entities cannot grant special powers; the only exception is that of the elves and their gods, the Eternals. Long ago, the Eternals taught an order of elves the secret of immortality. It did not make the elven people immortal, but it did give them the knowledge of how to grant immortality to individual beings. Those trained in the magic of immortality guard the secret with their lives, and only bestow immortality onto heroes they deem deserving.

πŸ“’Are there any particularly influential religious institutions in your WIP?

Aertha largely subscribes to folk religions with very little organized practice aside from holidays. The most influential religious organization would be that of the Kyranian priesthood. Their gods, the Inklaen, speak through the priesthood in order to determine the divine right to rule, among other things. Historically, this meant that the reigning royal family would change every few generations, if not every generation, as the gods deemed someone else more worthy of rule. However, the current royal family has not left the throne in centuries.

πŸ₯ͺWhat kind of unique and/or popular foods exist in your WIP? Magical foods?

Honestly, I have not done much thinking about foods in Aertha, let alone magical foods. I know that tea is a huge cultural focus on Aronia, and I have done some thinking about street food in Aronia's capitol of Puradasis.
