(pp. 360-394) Feminist Therapy: Role-Play & Group Engagement Exercise OUTLINE:  Introduction  Feminist Therapy: Role Play [4 minute excerpt from the video]  Engagement activity: 2-3 people per group Options: Discuss one of the three questions  Open forum: Group Reponses to the questions  Raffle for knowledge Movers & Shakers I define feminist therapy as the practice of therapy informed by feminist political philosophies and analysis, grounded in multicultural feminist scholarship on the psychology of women, men and gender, which leads both therapist and client toward strategies and solutions advancing feminist resistance, transformation and social change in daily personal life, and in relationships with the social, emotional and political environments. –Laura S. Brown, PhD (Multi-Cultural Feminist Therapy) Tenants: Breaking down the hierarchy of power in the therapeutic relationship Replace patriarchal systems with FT consciousness Assuming an egalitarian stance & counselor as advocate Interdependence vs. Dependence Client’s ability to self-define themselves Gender role analysis and interventions Power analysis and intervention Interventions: Role Play Bibliotherapy Psychoeducation Assertiveness training Behavior rehearsal Cognitive restructuring Psychodrama techniques Identifying and challenging untested beliefs  Styles of Feminist Therapy: Liberal Cultural Radical Socialist Post Modern Women of Color Lesbian Global International FEMINIST THERAPY (FT) ACTIVITY DISCUSSION EXERCISE Pick one question to discuss within your 2-3 person cohort.  What Feminist Therapeutic principles and interventions did you see being implemented in the video? We cannot form an accurate picture of woman’s status by simply calling attention to the role assigned females under patriarchy. –Bell Hooks1  What was the therapist’s counseling stance? Did the therapist understand the basic FT tenants and interventions? Assume that you are needed and capable of being a good ally. Know that you'll make mistakes and commit yourself to correcting them and continuing on as an allie, no matter what. Don't give up. –Gloria Yamato2  What were the main internal and external concerns of the client? Was she able to understand her concerns from a societal, cultural, political point of view, and intimately becomes her own “rescuer”? …it is incumbent on . . . people to reveal the existence of that pane of glass, to give voice to the silent components of human experience, to give witness to the validity of other realities. –Dr. Oliva M.
