Il lessico politico nei testi in volgare delle Origini

In this paper I analyse the variation displayed by Old Venetan texts regarding Negative Concord with preverbal items. Venetian displays strict Negative Concord, while Paduan and Veronese have mandatory preverbal negation only with negative adverbs and the negative coordination particle. With argumental quantifiers (like 'nobody') preverbal negation is very rare in these varieties. I propose that the distribution is driven by two factors: the category of the preverbal negative item, and its structural position above the inflected verb. Il lessico polibiano dell’opposizione politica è in parte tradizionale, in parte innovativo; ma soprattutto, esso viene applicato solo limitatamente ai contesti di politica interna, per privilegiare quelli della diplomazia e della politica internazionale; inoltre, ai contrasti interni nell’ambito delle assemblee di città e federazioni greche si accostano quelli che si sviluppano all’interno delle corti reali. Ciò dipende evidentemente dalle diverse condizioni dell’epoca ellenistica, in cui le relazioni internazionali costituiscono il tema prevalente dello scontro politico, le ambascerie sono l’occasione principale di agone retorico e la corte va accostandosi, e sostituendosi, all’assemblea dello stato autonomo, cittadino o federale, come sede del confronto politico.

In Martial's epigrams Silius Italicus is portrayed as a man of learning, author of the Punica and admirer of Vergil's works, but also as a public figure and a former consul of Rome. My paper focuses on the epigrams devoted to the 'political' Silius, and suggests to relate them mainly to a certain stage in Silius Italicus' life and to a specific communication strategy.

After a brief contextualization concerning the political and cultural role of Albertano da Brescia and his works, with particular regard to his trilogy of moral treatises, this paper examines some of the innovations introduced into Italian vulgar political lexicon by two of the most ancient Tuscan vernacular translations – produced in the second half of the 13 th century – of those treatises. Making comparisons with other Medieval thinkers’ works, this article discusses a bunch of terms and expressions which convey crucial concepts of the Middle Age political thought and which became part of the Italian language and cultural tradition also due to those vernacular versions.
