The main interest of this paper is to analyze the influence of the dynamic and ever-changing environment of projects nowadays. Corporate projects undergo lots of real time changes and these need to be thought of and understood before starting the project so as to avoid any delays or obstruction in the completion of the project. The term ‘project management ‘was coined in the 1950s, initially with emphasis on activity scheduling, budgeting and control and remained so even with the advent of computers in management. In 1980s, it remained the same but with introduction of project information systems that ran on mainframe computers. In 1990’s project management was redefined by wide range of fields such as operations management, systems thinking, new product development, risk management, the quality movement, organizational dynamics, industrial psychology and various other aspects of commercial management to become an independent discipline and profession. The understanding of what entails project management has evolved over the years and is still evolving today. Project management has grown from the stage of non-functional component of the management science, to the stage of strategic component of organizational development. In project management two of the most important processes within project management c...
The demand for professional expertise in project management is constantly increasing due to the progressive complication of environmental processes and the functioning of organizations of all kinds as well as arising problems through projects' execution. To meet this demand, project management is intensively developed from both the practical and scientific side. As a result, project management has become a separate field of practical and scientific knowledge which has a separate subject of study, its own theoretical foundations, using specific research methods. The development of project management is done by specialized academic centers, research institutes, professional associations, consulting firms and individual professionals. The Chair of Project Management at the Warsaw School of Economics is one of the leading centers of scientific and practical project management in Poland. The issues described in this publication cover a wide spectrum of current challenges and problems in project management. The purpose of this publication is to present the research achievements of Chair and people co-operating with it in both national and – above all – international environment of specialists in project management.

It is determined that we formulate the concept of project management as the art and science of effective use of experience, knowledge, skills, tools and methods to meet the expectations of stakeholders in accordance with the criteria of project acceptability within agreed parameters. It is noted that project management is an approach to achiev project goals within organizational structural and resource constraints for internal projects. For external projects there should also be considered political, social, legal and environmental constraints. Five modern approaches to project management are considered, among them: traditional, flexible, waterfall, system approaches in project management and program management approach. While analyzing these approaches their main components were highlighted, as well as substantiated which components are the most effective in project management. Among the highlighted components: defining the role of each member of the project team-because understanding of each area of responsibility will ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all processes; a clearly defined goal of the projectbecause the correctness of the goal determines the direction of movement and development of the project; ensuring transparency of tasks-this means creating a project management system in which all team members can easily and efficiently access all the necessary information about the project.

The article analyzes the strategic importance of the project management, that ability of managers to manage projects consistently and competently, being considered a strategic competence. It is also analysed the change of project management vision in terms of the manager's role and responsibility, the necessary knowledge, the clients' expectations and the definition of success. The article underlines the fact that managers begin to focus more and more on business. Projects should now be regarded from a strategic perspective, in the context of a business or an enterprise that should provide value both to the client and to the parent corporation.

Projects have been studied and practiced for many years since the Egyptian era, however, it goes back to fifty years ago that companies started to apply project management tools and techniques for controlling complex projects. There are four periods of project management and have been identified to better capture the history of modern project management. The origin of the modern project management started between the 1900s and the 1950s and continues to now. The first achievement of modern project management is the development of CPM and PERT. The critical path method (CPM) was developed by DuPont Company in the late 1950s. This method plans projects without considering either resources or uncertainty in task times. In order to model the effect of uncertainty in task times, the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton developed the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), also in the late 1950s (Hall, 2012, p.132). Morris (1987) argues that the origin of project management comes from a chemical industry during the Second World War. Therefore, four periods have been identified that each period discussed the history of project management tools and practices (Kwak & Anbari, 2003, p.1.2). For the purpose of this essay, project management defines as practicing of initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing the work of a team to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria at the specified time (Moe, 2006, pp.398-399). According to Shenher and Dvir (2007, p.2), although project management has become a strong discipline and project managers have been practiced in this field many years, some projects fail. As a result of this failing in many projects, it is necessary to search and study for recent development in the field of project management. Project management involves the planning and organization of a company's resources to move a specific task, event, or duty towards completion.

A Delphi study using twenty-three project practitioners over six rounds is aimed to identify significant problems in project management, arising from the nature of projects other than those readily identifiable in a literature review. The study goes on to identify project managers’ behaviours which are recognised as having successful impacts on the delivery of projects. A Relative Importance Index for the problems and behaviours resulting from the issues identified in the study is calculated. This study continues by reporting the views of practitioners involved in the management of large projects on the everyday problems they experience in managing projects, problems that are not adequately addressed in current project management texts concerning the nature of projects. Five additional problems, not generally discussed in the literature, were identified together with seven interpersonal skills and behaviours that are major contributors to increasing the likelihood of a successful pr...
Project management is a crucial expertise in today's modern society. To be able to define, plan, execute and close a project are the mains phases of a project.According to the International Journal of Project Management, Project Management is the combination of the technical skills and planning which lead the accomplishment of unique product by managing process from the point of cost, time, and quality and to diversify the Project constraints to use various resources . It can be identified as "A temporary endeavour undertaken to achieve a particular aim." (2002 The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.). It is never on going or continuous it always has an end date. To be able to manage a project effectively a project manager should always consider Time, Scope, cost and quality since these are crucial elements of a project to end successfully. Project Management also very crucially involves a team and the ability for the team to work well together defines how well the project can come along and be put together since managers must plan and arrange with the input of others. Throughout this report interviews with I.T project managers on different elements of Project Management will demonstrate and asses the implications as well as implementations that consist in managing projects, also how managers assess and deal with and skills that have come to be improved over time.

Challenges could be observed as opportunities for success. The growth of project management body of knowledge and the advancement of project managers' capabilities in dealing with resources are crucial to the successful delivery of projects. This paper builds on vast review of literature that took place over a series of publications under Project Management topic. The management of uncertainty and dealing with different challenges are seen as necessary conditions for effective project management. Sources of challenges are wide ranging and have fundamental effects on projects and project management body of knowledge. These challenges are not limited to specific industry, and include scope management, information technology, team dynamics, customers' satisfaction, lean management, communication, innovation and quality. Common project management body of knowledge does not address many of the listed sources of challenges, particularly in 'soft' project management skills where flexibility and tolerance of PMs are necessary. More advanced efforts to figure out and handle important sources of challenges are needed. Such attempts need to entail project managers' capabilities as well as the organization maturities including some aspects of organisation culture and learning.
