Considering its hematological and immunological functions, spleen is a very important organ. A change occurs in its size as the spleen performs these functions. This study aims to examine the possible relationships between spleen volume and the basic hemogram and biochemical parameters in serum. Multidetector computed tomography images and basic hemogram and biochemical parameters of 74 adult individuals, 34 male and 40 female, who were found to be healthy, were used in the study. Spleen volume was estimated using the Cavalieri method on multidetector computed tomography images and the correlations between the volume value with basic hemogram and biochemistry parameters were researched. While negative significant correlations were found between the estimated spleen volume and lymphocyte percentage (r=-0.224) and platelet level (r=-0.271); positive significant correlations were found between hemoglobin level (r=0.228), hematocrit level (r=0.237), alanine aminotransferase (r=0.345), and erythrocyte level (r=0.375). As a result of this study, a relationship was found between spleen volume and lymphocyte percentage, hematocrit level, erythrocyte level, platelet level, and alanine aminotransferase level in serum. We believe that the results of the study will provide a larger perspective to clinicians in the diagnosis of diseases associated with spleen.

Purpose (1) To explore age-related changes in the volume of the pancreas on computed tomography (CT) images calculated by the method of Cavalieri. (2) To investigate the relationship between these changes and body mass index (BMI), gender, abdominal diameter, abdominal skinfold thickness. Methods We retrospectively reviewed abdominal CT examinations of 272 adults between the ages of 20-88 years. There were seven groups of patients, with 40 patients (only ninth decade has 32 patients) for each decade. Results Pancreatic volume (PV) was found to be 63.68 ± 15.08 cm 3 in females, 71.75 ± 15.99 cm 3 in males (mean value of both groups, 67.71 ± 16.03 cm 3). Maximum value of PV was found in the fourth decade in females, males and also for mean of both groups (73.50, 84.21 and 78.85 cm 3 , respectively). PV remained constant until *60 years of age. Thereafter, it gradually decreased in both genders. There was a negative correlation between PV and age (p \ 0.001, r:-0.473). We found positive correlation between PV and BMI, sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), transverse abdominal diameter (TAD), anterior subcutaneous adipose tissue thicknesses (ASAT), posterior subcutaneous adipose tissue thicknesses (PSAT), bilateral subcutaneous adipose tissue thicknesses (BSAT). Conclusions Quantitative data may allow clinicians to better estimate age-related PV changes and help them in decision making.

The hippocampal formation is a complex region of the brain related to memory and learning. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether exposure of neonatal rats to formaldehyde (FA) had either early or delayed effects on the numbers of granule cells in the dentate gyrus (DG). After birth, the neonatal male Wistar rats were exposed throughout a 30-day period to various concentrations of FA: 0 (control group), 6 ppm (low concentration group) and 12 ppm (high concentration group). This was done by placing them for 6 h/day and 5 days per week in a glass chamber containing FA vapor. Then, five animals from each group were anesthetized and decapitated on postnatal day (PND) 30, and the remaining five animals were sacrificed on PND 90 by intracardiac perfusion using 10% neutral buffered FA solution. The Cavalieri principle of stereological approaches was used to determine the volume of the DG in these sections. The optical fractionator counting method was used to estimate the total number of granule cells in the DG. The appearance of granule cells was normal under light microscopy in all PND 30 and PND 90 groups. There were significant age-related reductions in the volume of the DG at PND 90 irrespective of which group was examined. Significant age-related neuron loss was also determined at PND 90 compared to that at PND 30. Rats treated with a high concentration FA were found to have fewer granule cells than either the animals treated with a low concentration FA or the control group (p < 0.01 and p < 0.01, respectively) at PND 90 but not at PND 30. These findings clearly indicate that granule cells in the DG may be vulnerable to stress and the concentration of FA to which they are exposed during early postnatal life, and also that a neurotoxic effect of high dose FA on cell number is only seen after a long time period. These results may explain why some disorders do not appear until later life.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of estradiol benzoate (EB) and FSH on hormonal levels and stereology structure of testis in Ghezel lambs treated with Tamoxifen citrate (TC). Sixteen lambs (105-110 days old) were randomly allocated in two groups. The control group (4 lambs) received distilled water (5 ml/day) by oral gavage for 30 days). The treatment group (T 12 lambs) received first Tamoxifen citrate (660 μg/kg by oral gavage for 30 days), and was then allocated into three groups: T-T that received TC (660 μg/kg by oral gavage), T-FSH that received FSH (3 mg/kg, by IM), and T-EB that received EB (3 mg/kg, by IM) for 10 days. The stereological evaluation of the lamb testes showed that the groups T-T, TCFSH and TC-EB showed extensive seminiferous tubular atrophy compared with control group. The administration of TC with EB significantly (P<0.01) improved the volume of germinal epithelium compered to TT group but co-administration of FSH did not induce significant differences in this parameter, in comparison with T-T group (P<0.01). The administration of TC increased the intertubular space, reduced testicular weight, the height of the germinal epithelium, spermatogenic and sertoli-leydig cells number (P<0.01). There was no significant variation on the volume of testis (length, height and width), seminiferous tubule, lumen, capsule and interstitium (P>0.01). Serum testosterone and FSH concentrations were significantly reduced (P<0.01) when lambs were treated with TC 20 mg/kg daily for 30 days. These finding demonstrated that FSH and EB could be useful in improving testicular structure and function of testis following TC treatment.

The aim of the study was to provide values for morphometric parameters of histological components of normally delivered full term placentas of Sudanese women and compare them with reported parameters for other ethnic groups. A total of 200 histological sections, stained with hematoxylin and eosin and trichrome stains were used to give a final sample of 1000 fields saved as PowerPoint images for histomorphometry. A systematic random sampling procedure was adopted to ensure the optimum sample size that keeps the percentage error below 5% for the volume estimates. Standard stereological methods of point-counting and intersection counting were applied to the microscopic fields to determine the volumes of placental components and surface area of fetal-maternal interface. The morpho-metric parameters showed no variations either between the placentas or between central and peripheral regions. The placental villi and the intervillus space occupied 65% and 35% of placental volume respectively with mean absolute values of 318 cm 3 and 169 cm 3. The mean absolute volume of the intervillus space was less than that of other ethnic groups by 8.67% but was significantly larger than that of the fetal capillaries which measured 41.2 cm 3. The ratio of the absolute volume of the intervillus space to the volume of the fetal blood capillaries was 4:1 in both Sudanese and other ethnic groups. In the placental villi the fetal connective tissue together with the contained blood vessels larger than capillaries occupied 88% of the villus volume. The mean surface area of the fetal-maternal interface of the placental villi (syncytiotrophoblast) was 12.59 M 2 .

BackgroundIn the rat, binge-like ethanol (EtOH) exposure during the early neonatal period (a developmental period equivalent to the human third trimester) can result in a permanent deficit of cerebellar Purkinje cells (Pcells). However, the consequences of a moderate binge alcohol exposure on a single day during this postnatal period have not been established. This is an issue of importance as many pregnant women binge drink periodically at social drinking levels.
