Collective Narrative Practice

The bereaved by suicide are rapidly catapulted into not only making sense of the death of their loved one but also dealing with the multiple social prescriptions about what can and cannot be discussed. This presents those bereaved by suicide with special problems unique to the method of death. This paper discusses a narrative practice approach to therapy that has been specifically developed to counter the effects of marginalisation and stigma attached to certain forms of life experience. The founders of narrative therapy were both social workers, committed to challenging operations of power and privilege in mental health services and psychiatry. Four modes of narrative practice are reviewed - re-membering practices, multi-storied tellings, collective narrative practices and reclaiming histories - and how they assist people who are bereaved by suicide is described.

Resilience as a Protective Factor Against Compassion Fatigue in Trauma Therapists by Daniel P. David MSW, New York State University at Stony Brook, 2002 Abstract Many adults in the United States experience posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within their lifetimes. Researchers have identified compassion fatigue (CF), which debilitates mental health providers as a result of being exposed to their clients' traumatic experiences, as an occupational hazard. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a correlation exists between the presence of CF and the level of resilience. A confidential survey using the Connors-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Professional Quality of Life Scale Version 5, and a demographic questionnaire were given to graduate-level mental health clinicians who self-identified as routinely working with and/or treating trauma victims in the past 6 months. Participants were recruited from the New England Society for the Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation, the Metropolitan Atlanta Therapists Network, Dallas Chapter NASW listserv, and the Georgia Therapist Network. A multivariate analysis on the collected data was conducted to determine whether a relationship exists between the resilience scale and the subscales of CF within these population samples. According to study findings, there is a correlation between resilience and the 3 compassion fatigue subscales-CF, burnout, and compassion satisfaction. This study may lead to positive social change by helping guide clinicians to find ways to enhance resilience, and therefore, decrease risks of CF.

This paper describes an approach to community work informed by narrative ideas that we hope will be of relevance to practitioners in a wide-range of contexts. Over the last year, a number of Aboriginal communities, which are experiencing hard times, have been exchanging stories. These are stories about special skills, special knowledge, about hopes and dreams and the ways that people are holding onto these. They are stories that honour history. This article describes the thinking that has informed this process. It also contains extracts of stories and messages from different communities.

This paper describes explorations of the relevance of narrative practices to working with communities which are facing various concerns and predicaments. These explorations have been undertaken in the context of community assignments that have been initiated in response to approaches from communities. In describing these explorations, this paper highlights the assumptions that have oriented our participation in these initiatives and some of the principles of narrative practice that we have found to be of particular importance in them. As well, this paper presents some special considerations in regard to addressing the psychological pain and emotional distress that is the outcome of trauma; discusses the priority given to the development of partnerships between the members of our team and between team members and community members; and provides an account of the structure of the community-wide gathering phase of these assignments.

This paper explores the complex experiences of women who have lost a male partner to suicide after experiencing violence from that partner. These circumstances often result in women trying to rise from the 'stigma' of violence and suicide. This paper describes how using multi-storied re-membering narrative practices creates space for women to speak of their multitude of experiences. These stories illuminate agency and hopes for the future for the women. They also offer ways free of a double taboo: in relation to suicide and in relation to men's violence against women.

В статье представлен концептуальный комментарий медиапроекта «Монолог на лестнице: Разговор с Шукшиным», созданного студентами и преподавателями кафедры связей с общественность и рекламы Алтайского государственного университета при участии декана факультета массовых коммуникаций, филологии и политологии Сергея Анатольевича Манскова. Медиапроект представляет диалоговую конструкцию, построенную на основе семантического обмена и перевода между персональными целостностями – участниками проекта и личностью-образом Василия Макаровича Шукшина. Цель проекта «Разговор с Шукшиным» - создание «человеческой перспективы настоящего момента», проектируемой на основе диалога персональных целостностей участников проекта и мира смысловых перспектив В.М. Шукшина, ограненным в нарративном этюде «Монолог на лестнице». В медиапроекте «Разговор с Шукшиным» моделируется коммуникация с миром смыслов Шукшина как частью российского семантического континуума 60-70-ых гг., значимой составляющей русской советской культуры второй половины XX века. Медиопроект «Разговор с Щукщинам» предлагается рассматривать в качестве видеосъемки прочтения шукшинского фенотекста – текста алтайского фронтира – представителем алтайской когнитивной культуры, по месту жительства приписанного к Барнаулу. \ The article presents a conceptual review of the media project "Monologue on the stairs: a Conversation with Maksinym" created by the students and faculty of the Department of PR and advertising, Altai state University with the participation of the Dean of the faculty of mass communications, Philology and political science Sergey Anatolyevich Maskova. The media project is a dialogue structure built on the basis of semantic exchange and translation between personal integrity – participants of the project and the personality-image of Vasily Makarovich Shukshin.. The aim of the project "Conversation with Shukshin" - creating "a human perspective of the present moment" projected on the basis of a dialogue of personal integrity of the project participants and the semantic perspectives of the world by V. M. Shukshin, cut in narrative study "Monologue on the stairs". The media project "the Conversation with Shukshin" simulated communication with the image of Vasily Shukshin as part of the Russian semantic continuum 60-70's., a significant component of Soviet Russian culture in the second half of the twentieth century. Mediaproject "Conversation with Shukshina" to be considered in the video quality and reading Shukshin protext – text-Altai frontier, –the representative of the Altai cognitive culture, the place of residence assigned to Barnaul.

Collective narrative practice is an emerging field. Building on the thinking and practice foundations of narrative therapy, collective narrative practice seeks to respond to groups and communities who have experienced significant social suffering in contexts in which 'therapy' may not be culturally resonant. This paper tells a story of this emerging field. It describes the author's journey through the intellectual history of six key aspects of narrative therapy as well as richly describing a range of social projects and partnerships. In doing so, this paper provides an historical foundation to the emerging field of collective narrative practice.

Yaşar Kemal’in “Bir Ada Hikâyesi”, yayımı 14 yıl sürmüş bir roman dörtlüsüdür. Dizideki romanlar ve yayın yılları şu şekildedir: Fırat Suyu Kan Akıyor Baksana 1998, Karıncanın Su İçtiği 2002, Tanyeri Horozları 2002 ve son cilt Çıplak Deniz Çıplak Ada 2012.  Yayın tarihi açısından diğerleriyle arasında 10 yıl olan son cildin dörtlüye yaptığı katkı ve dörtlüyü bir sona ulaştırıp ulaştırmadığı konusu ayrıca tartışılmalıdır. Bu konu bir yana, BAH dörtlüsünü en temelde savaş karşıtı bir anlatı olarak değerlendirebiliriz. Ancak Yaşar Kemal’in bu dörtlüdeki niyeti bundan çok daha karmaşıktır. Dizinin tamamını kapsayan ve çeşitli biçimlerde ele alınan, tarihteki tüm savaşlara yöneltilebilecek genel eleştirel tutum, sadece bir yola çıkış noktasıdır. Buradan yola çıkan yazar, Anadolu’nun 1915’ten 1925’e kadar geçen on sene içerisinde, Birinci Dünya Savaşı ve Kurtuluş Savaşı’ndan nasıl etkilendiğini, bu travmatik etkiyle savaşın hemen ardından nasıl başa çıkmaya çalıştığını vermeye odaklanır. Bu anlamda da, söz konusu dönemdeki savaşları bir mecburiyet, daha da kötüsü bir kahramanlık anlatısı olarak sunan tüm edebi ve edebi olmayan anlatılara yönelik bir “karşı-anlatı” kurar.

This paper presents a workshop that had the purpose to assist the elderly people of the Glorias Navales settlement in Viña del Mar that were suffering from the effects of depression. The workshop involved gathering of the ways in which they had responded to hard times through the production of a collective document containing their stories, skills and knowledge. The work described took place in the context of a psychosocial workshop in primary health and was informed by the collective narrative practices (Denborough, D. 2008) in an effort to provide response and support in front of the effects of the depression in the lives of the elderly people.
The context of this practice is described, how this workshop came to be, the features of this methodology, and the skills and knowledges which have sustained the elderly from the effects of depression. Lastly, I present a reflection regarding the relevance of this kind of intervention in the process of giving voice to the resources and ways of coping of the communities professionals of psychosocial support work with. I present that respectful and collaborative practices are crucial for the generation of a sense of community, a hopeful approach and the development of the preferred stories of the people we work with.

Grâce aux informations apportées par les études descriptives que constituent la première et la seconde partie du présent mémoire, nous analyserons ici les différentes catégories de référents des toponymes ainsi que les diverses valeurs et particularités que peuvent revêtir ces derniers. Par ailleurs, nous étudierons la répartition des dénominations d'un point de vue géographique, sociologique mais aussi historique, en mettant en évidence tout l'intérêt qui se dégage de cet examen ; ainsi, pourrons nous faire le point sur les principaux enjeux de mémoire que révèle la considération de l'ensemble des vocables qui composent notre corpus, à savoir quelles sont les priorités toponymiques propres à l'espace que nous nous sommes proposé d'étudier et ce que suggèrent ces priorités.

This article is an attempt to examine literature’s ability to imagine a new ‘form of life’ – which is to say, the ability to create a new form of language (Wittgenstein 2009 [1953]: 11). Fictions that aim to portray a new or different ‘form of life’ – such as sci-fi or dystopian novels – often need to engage in language experiments. In this article, I shall analyze two novels that set out to imagine collective societies and one particular narrative technique that is often use to this end: we-narration. The very possibility of a collective voice, in the sense of a collective utterance arising not from ‘me’ but from ‘us’, is offered by fiction but denied by the philosophy of language. For linguistic theory, only ‘I’ can ever speak or have a voice; likewise, by extension, for theories of narrative only a singular ‘I’ can ever function as an implicit or explicit narrator – a premise which has been an axiom in the field of narratology. I argue that collective fiction, and we-narratives in particular, clearly demonstrate that this is not always the case and that there are other possibilities. Aesthetic, cultural and social implications of these linguistic possibilities can be productively teased out with the help of the idea of ‘forms of life’. Simply put, when language is significantly altered – e.g., when the central narrative ‘I’, the ‘origo’, is replaced by a collective ‘we’ – something in that to which it refers – the form of life ¬– also changes significantly. To exemplify this, I shall draw on China Miéville’s sci-fi novel Embassytown (2012 [2011]) which develops its own theory of language of a non-human ‘form of life’, which is also, essentially, collective. My second case study is Chang-rae Lee’s dystopian novel, On Such a Full Sea (2014), which envisages a collective society with the help of an untypical technique of we-narration. My approach is narratological rather than linguistic-philosophical and will focus on the techniques thorough which the link between language and ‘forms of life’ yields itself for examination in these novels.

Responding to the need for more information concerning the mental health and psychological well-being of women living amid political oppression and war, this study aimed to explore specific factors that contribute to women's individual and collective perceptions about war and the associated traumatic life events that occurred during their lives. Moving from a socioecological and culture-informed perspective, we used narrative timelines elicited from 21 Palestinian women in Gaza, both individually and collectively, as a tool for both data collection and intervention. A deductive, top-down, thematic content analysis procedure was used to categorize data. The main events outlined by the women in their historical accounts, both individual and collective, were linked to political events in and surrounding Palestine. The life events' calendars reflect a constant attempt in balancing and compensating traumatic events with sources of well-being related to social support and family. Individual and collective narrative activities contributed to generate a significant reframing in the attribution of meaning and emotional perceptions of the participants. Women articulated how they build resilience through transgenerational and daily practices of resistance that encompass indigenous strategies of coping and skills of survival.

resumen Este artículo describe cómo la metodología del equipo de la vida posibilita a los adolescentes que viven en régimen de acogida y de cumplimiento de medidas judiciales con equipo educativo, el hablar de lo que es importante para ellos, lo que protegen, lo que los mantiene; a pesar de los momentos de dificultad que han podido vivir. En muchas ocasiones, el pertenecer a familias catalogadas por la administración como desestructuradas o provenir de familias con el estatus de refugiadas o inmigrantes sin recursos, hace que la identidad de estos chicos se vea afectada de algún modo. Con la terapia narrativa como base para el desarrollo del equipo de la vida, se facilita el hablar acerca de sus identidades de una forma colectiva para celebrar los "goles" que sus equipos ya han conseguido. Al mismo tiempo, se pueden realizar planes de futuro para la vida después de la emancipación de los pisos de acogida. Finalmente, el utilizar la metáfora del deporte suele encajar con la cultura masculina de los chicos y nos permite trabajar con una visión alternativa a la mascu-linidad que se ofrece desde nuestra cultura occidental. Palabras clave: Equipo de la vida, Terapia narrati-va, prácticas narrativas colectivas, adolescentes, casas de acogida, masculinidad. abstract This article describes how the Team of Life narrative methodology enables adolescents living in foster homes and homes of judicial measures to talk about what is important for them, what they protect, held onto, despite the moments of difficulty they have experienced. On many occasions, belonging to families catalogued by the administration as destructured or coming from families with the status of refugees or immigrants without resources, makes the identity of these children is affected in some way. With narrative therapy as a basis for the development of the Team of Life, makes it possible to talk about their identities in a collective way to celebrate "goals" that their teams have already achieved. At the same time, future plans for life can be made after the emancipation of the foster homes. Finally, using sporting metaphors often resonate with the masculine culture of the young men and allow us to work with an alternative vision to the masculinity that is offered from our Western Culture.

The original intent of this work was to prevent bullying in school context. making visible the responses they gave to past conflict situations. Listening to the stories about the inner reflection we can understand the wider culture and how our closer experiences related to violence have been shaped by it. Starting from the idea that the values are the platform on which we can construct an intervention, prevention and attention to bullying strategy, we believe that recovering the teen’s experience about difficulties and how they solved it, they will be able to solve more effectively difficult situations in the future. This paper presents the various methods used (tree of life and collective documents) to compile the adolescents personal values, dreams and hopes, on which to base the coping mechanisms to face violence and to rescue their stories of resilience. It is important to highlight that these narrative practices aim at creating a suitable climate in order to avoid re-traumatisation and, in turn, helping to rescue the alternative stories to the problem of violence.
