Conference Interpretation

This research paper aims at highlighting the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in the work of interpreters. Firstly the concept of EI is defined and a review of the relevant literature undertaken focusing on more-recent studies that are closely related to Interpreting studies, namely Sign Language Interpreting and Translation Studies. Then, using quantitative and qualitative research methods consisting of EI tests (TEIQue) and interviews with Conference and Public Service Interpreters who took part in this study, the author presents evidence that, overall, interpreters have an average level of Emotional Intelligence. Also those respondents who scored higher for EI traits such as Emotion Regulation, Self-Motivation, Adaptability and Stress Management seemed to be better at managing clients’ expectations and driven by their inner standards rather than external factors; they adjusted well to stressful or unexpected work situations and enjoyed greater job satisfaction. Exploring the significance of individual traits of interpreters and the impact on their work, the author believes that this research paper makes a good case for the study of EI in Interpreting Studies and for EI to be incorporated in the training of interpreters.

This is an attempt to point out the highlights of an ambitious and well crafted large work on the teaching of conference interpreting. Over two volumes, the authors touch on both the interests of CI students and on the guidance of teachers, considering the future of the discipline and the need to integrate theory into the teaching practice. Ideas for planning curricula or even the ongoing training of active interpreters are provided, and almost every type of professional environment is described for junior interpreters and teachers to take note of.

This paper presents a closed loop scan mechanism using a stepper motor based Gimbal Technique. For its control, Arduino microcontroller based drive electronics is developed. This paper proposes a flexible structure for usefulness in various applications like tracking, satellite imaging etc. This paper analyzes the programming and hardware structure for an easy implementation using the Arduino microcontroller. For a bipolar stepper motor drive, the full H-bridge driver based electronics is developed. Motor shaft position is sensed by incremental optical encoder. The proposed module has high accuracy (.06% in scan rate).

The use of portable sound equipment has grown rapidly in the conference interpretation market in the last few years, which has sometimes meant that it has been utilised in working environments ill-suited for interpreters to achieve the best performance possible.

On the 100th anniversary of the emergence of conference interpreting, this
paper considers the role of discourse analysis, and particularly Critical
Discourse Analysis (CDA), in interpreter training. In the context of recent
pedagogical innovations, it is vital to examine whether, and how, CDA can
support the development of analytical skills in interpreter training.

This paper presents a pilot study of a CDA-based module conducted in a
classroom environment. Discourse-based mental modelling (Kohn and
Kalina 1996) underpins the module, blending theory and practice.
Theoretical elements of CDA, including ideological discourse strategies
(van Dijk 2006) and manipulation strategies (Charaudeau 2009), are
introduced to enable students to apply discourse analysis in practice.

The objective of this study was to ascertain whether a CDA-based module
could improve students’ comprehension of political discourse, as well as
their subsequent interpreting of such discourse. Students’ perceptions were
explored using focus groups (Hale and Napier 2018). The results suggest
that CDA has a positive impact on interpreter training. However, further
studies of both students’ perceptions and the development of analytical
skills for interpreting are needed. Additionally, the paper contributes to the
literature on the use of theory-based modules in professional training
contexts.

In this paper, the author explores the effective use of interactive e-books in interpretation training courses for interpreters. In doing so, the author has considered using e-books in and out of class as a feasible option for refresher courses, targeted to interpreters that would like to add C languages.

The author intends to develop the concept of teaching refresher courses with an electronic tool and test an e-book that could blend varied resources so interpreters could simultaneously improve their simultaneous interpreting skills, terminology review, and practice of language enhancement exercises, all in a single platform, having portability of class material. This layout of class material can benefit those interpreters or students that are on the move or temporarily in locations, which lack connectivity. 

The objectives:
1. Analyze how students of interpretation interact with e-books in and out of class.
2. Explain how students organize their classroom and self-practice material and see how e-books could fit best in that organization. 
3. Provide students with an e-book integrating terminology, culture and world knowledge, glossaries, speeches, texts, exercises and material that can activate a C language, and analyze the results.
4. Determine how e-books can promote learning continuity for interpreters that intend to add C languages to their language combination

While e-books have lately received much attention, there seems to be an abundance of e-books that are merely PDFs. These scanned copies of print books lack interactivity and connectivity with rich media or resources, ending up only in a few hyperlinks. The demand for digital tools is on the rise and paper will become obsolete according to the Global e-book Survey 2013 by Bookboon, which will help reduce the book industry's carbon footprint.
