In 'The taming of emotions' I described how, during the middle ages, the first guild associations struggled to discipline our more spontaneous and fierce impulses. In later centuries our early industrialists experienced great difficulty to control violence, abuse of alcohol, raving, obscene language and sexual intercourse in their factories. In our days these impulses, or rather their more offensive and outrageous manifestations, may have been tamed but what happened with the underlying drives and emotions. What happened with jealousy, disappointment, triumph, anger, sexual attraction, resentful gossip and power games? Have modern offices and factories now become graveyards of emotional tranquility and neutrality?

The focal point of security is preventing unauthorized access or loss of customer or company data. Texas Instruments proposes these solution components for activating biometric security of a technological infrastructure. Methods and documented standards are being developed, as biometrics is a newcomer to the cyber security scene. The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) declared that interoperability is the cornerstone of success for biometrics and deployment requires both national and international standards. Standards have been developed but, rapid innovations coupled with the unconditional data interchange formats and technical interference, result in products that don’t meet established standards.

—Evolution of requirements and systems has led to the
proliferation of agile development as a matter of course in the current technological landscape. The rate of change poses a significant dilemma to stakeholders regarding the amount of effort and resources they should invest in methodological practices, including modeling, design, analysis, and specification. concept to operation often leads to preference of expedience for gaining early time-to-market over quality and robustness. Rather than referring to the modeling vs. agility challenge as a dilemma, we perceive it as an opportunity for synergy. Building on Object-Process Methodology (OPM)—the new ISO-19450 standard, we propose an agile model-based systems engineering (MBSE) framework that facilitates, and fosters development agility and system evolution. phase transition, deployment feedback, and configuration

Intensified competition and increased demand for customization has put manufacturing companies under pressure for finding more efficient approaches at handling the operations. As a response to this, Mass Customization (MC) has arisen as a strategy aiming to build the capabilities needed for delivering customized products, while maintaining the economies of scale. Engineering Change Management (ECM), which concern the handling of technical changes, is another field that has grown in importance with the increased demand for customization. Despite the commonalities of these two fields, the relation between MC and ECM has until now not been studied. This paper reports the results of a longitudinal case study in a global manufacturer. The paper contributes an overview of the key enablers of ECM for pursuing the MC benefits. Based on this, the paper contributes with new knowledge on the relation between the maturity of ECM capabilities and the success of MC.

Outsourcing is the remedy for many enterprises to improve their efficiency. However, to be able to assess the potential of one's own as well as the external providers' services, detailed information about the IT infrastructure and services is needed. In currently predominant IT Service Management Frameworks the so-called Configuration Management process provides an information nexus that is implemented by a database referred to as Configuration Management Database (CMDB). For outsourcing and collaboration scenarios such a CMDB should also provide an information basis for inter-organizational usage. Based on this motivation we first present the concept of an inter-organizational CMDB (ioCMDB). However, several IT Service Management disciplines need to be reconsidered in order to take full advantage of the ioCMDB. Thus, this article also presents the related challenges and the key issues for inter-organizational ITSM process enhancement.

US hospitals often now operate at full capacity, frequently causing
incoming ER patients to be staged in ER hallways or detoured to more distant
facilities. The process of moving patients from the ER is complex, requiring
matching of resources to the unique hour-to-hour mixture of patients and
illnesses in the enterprise. Some hospitals are adapting ‘lean manufacturing’
techniques by using wireless patient monitors to allow flexible creation and
reconfiguration of ‘Virtual Intensive Care Units (VICUs)’ to match changing
demands. Unfortunately, wireless medical devices cannot be deployed
carelessly because radio- and data-interference and capacity limitations can
create patient monitoring safety problems. This paper describes using Coloured
Petri Net (CPN) formal simulation modelling tools to perform wireless medical
network pre-planning and ongoing configuration management. CPN models
can be part of an effective Verification and Validation (V&V) process for
wireless medical devices in VICUs to ensure patient safety while meeting
clinical capacity demands.

This paper addresses the management and evolution of products that comprise a configuration of reusable components. Software product lines provide an example, as their development requires the cooperation of multiple product teams that utilize common domain components. The different perspectives of the product and component teams in such environments are reviewed and contrasted, since the concerns of each have to be managed and balanced as the product line evolves. A matrix representation is used to depict the dependencies, recording both the individual agreements made between stakeholders and the aggregated plan. Matrices are shown to succinctly describe the marketplace or enterprise view capturing the two complementary but orthogonal perspectives of component producers and consumers. The Release Matrix is introduced as the multi-dimensional form of a traditional release plan and is related to formal Configuration Management principles as they apply to complex environments.

Kernpunkt des in der IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) beschriebenen IT Service Managements bildet die sogenannte Configuration Management Database (CMDB). Die Informationen zu den in der CMDB zu verwaltenden Configuration Items liegen in heutigen Unternehmen oftmals in Form verteilter, heterogener und autonomer Systeme vor. Es besteht aber der Bedarf für einen zentralisierten Zugriff auf die CMDB. Am Beispiel der Anforderungen von Siemens IT Solutions and Services als einem international tätigen Anbieter für IT-Dienstleistungen und Outsourcing wurden CMDB-Produkte der Hersteller BMC, CA, HP und IBM auf deren Überdeckung hin untersucht sowie alternative Lösungsansätze in der wissenschaftlichen Fachliteratur recherchiert. Daraus resultierten folgende Ergebnisse: Es herrscht eine deutliche Diskrepanz zwischen dem Angebot von CMDB-Herstellern und den Anforderungen von Siemens IT Solutions and Services hinsichtlich des erwarteten Leistungsspektrums einer föderierten CMDB. Insbesondere der geforderte schreibende Zugriff über die Föderationsschicht wird von den CMDB-Produkten nicht gewährleistet. Auf dem Markt befindliche CMDB-Produkte sind am ehesten in die global rein lesenden Bereiche der virtuellen Datenintegration und der-Data Warehouse-Systeme einzuordnen. Verfahren aus dem Bereich föderierter Datenbanksysteme ermöglichen den global schreibenden Zugriff über die Föderationsschicht. Hierbei müssen allerdings Konsistenzerhaltungsgrad gegen Aufwand und Einbußen im Antwortzeitverhalten abgewogen werden. Eine funktionelle und leistungsfähige Architektur kann nur durch die Kombination verschiedener Integrationsverfahren erzielt werden, sodass der Zugriff für verschiedene Gruppen von Configuration-Items individuell optimiert werden kann.
