Construction Quality Management

In many construction and infrastructure management projects, it is important to ensure the flatness of concrete surfaces. Inspectors assess the quality of flat surface construction by checking whether a surface deviates from perfectly flat by more than a specified tolerance. Current flatness assessment methods, such as using a straightedge or shape profiler, are limited in the speed or density of their measurements. Laser scanners are general-purpose instruments for densely and accurately measuring three-dimensional shapes. In this paper, we show how laser scanners can be effectively used to assess surface flatness. Specifically, we formalize, implement, and validate three algorithms for processing laser-scanned data to detect surface flatness deviations. Since different scanners and algorithms can perform differently, we define an evaluation framework for objectively evaluating the performance of different algorithms and scanners. Using this framework, we analyze and compare the performance of the three algorithms using data from three laser scanners. The results show that it is possible to detect surface flatness defects as small as 3 cm across and 1 mm thick from a distance of 20 m.

Ergonomics can be defined as the study of work. More specifically, ergonomics is the science of designing the job to fit the worker, rather than physically forcing the worker’s body to fit the job. Ergonomic is not a new science, for the first time it was used in 1857 by a polish scholar. However it is still a new science for the most under developed countries including Iraq. The main aim of this study is overviewing of Ergonomic program. The objective is to give a basic introduction and clear definition of ergonomic. From the study, it was found that ergonomic save money and improves quality, productivity, employee morale and create better safety culture. Each employee needs to understand the ergonomic risk factors (ERF) related to his or her work tasks and solutions to minimize such risks. The researched believes that the most important elements of successful ergonomic program are management and training program.

In this study, the authors explore the impact of the enhanced commissioning process required by LEED certification on the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) professionals through a case study of a (LEED) New Construction in New Cairo, Egypt. While research has consistently shown the positive impact of green-rated buildings on building occupants, little research discusses the impact of green building rating on AEC professionals. Observation, document analysis, and interview of AEC professionals were used throughout the course of design and construction to identify the impact of the enhanced commissioning process on the quality of Project delivery and experience of AEC professionals. A model for relating the safety and quality performance in foundation is proposed in this paper. The project aims to study about the relationship between safety and quality performance in foundation by discussing few case studies and field data. The scope of the project is to 1. Identify the reasons for lack of quality in foundation 2. Justify the reasons by case studies 3. Obtain field data from different projects 4. Analyze the data and propose a model to show the relationship between safety and quality in foundation. The study concluded that safety in foundation can be improved by good quality foundation practice which is explained in the paper.

démarches d’amélioration de la qualité. Mais comment définir une démarche d’amélioration de la qualité? Avec quels outils ? Quel contenu ? On peut dresser un panorama des démarches d’amélioration de la qualité sur la base des  résultats d’entretiens menés avec quinze professionnels de la santé et d’un questionnaire administré à 400 établissements publics et privés, retourné par 62 d’entre eux.

Total quality management (TQM) is a set of opinions and ideas that widely called "management philosophy". This management technique is able to assist the construction firms in improving continuously the organization's performance, in order to satisfy customers and survive in the market. The success of TQM implementation is tightly dependent on identifying and selecting the appropriate critical success factors (CSFs), quality tools, and performance measures (KPIs) within TQM framework. Doubtlessly, a set of suitable performance measures (indicators) has a significant role to verify and ensure that TQM implementation can successfully achieve its aims in the organization. Thus, the main purpose of this paper was to develop a suitable framework to assess the effects of TQM implementation on organization's performance in construction industry. For this aim, the study was conducted a comprehensive literature review to specify the existing key performance indicators (KPIs) from 26 TQM frameworks that formulated by scholars. In data analysis, the only 20 KPIs were found of 26 TQM studies. The extracted KPIs (20) classified based on four dimensions of balanced scorecard (BSC), and then arranged from highest to lowest frequency for each perspective of BSC. Finally, a total of ten KPIs were determined and presented within BSC system as an appropriate performance measures framework, which enables evaluating critical areas that very vital to the success of TQM implementation in construction firms at project and enterprise levels.

During the last decades, Due to the advances in Information technology and communication and increase in volume of printed documents in many applications, document image databases have become increasingly important. Document Images are documents that normally begin on paper and are then via electronics scanned that move towards a paperless office and stored documents as images. Document Image retrieval is one of an important research area in the field of document image databases. Many approaches come in for indexing and retrieval document images. Traditionally, Optical character recognition (OCR) has been used for completely convert the manuscript to an electronic version which can be indexed automatically. Then, Keyword spotting has been proposed for indexing document image retrieval. Keyword spotting method has lower cost than OCR. But there are some problems in both of methods for indexing document images with non-text components. Three approaches have been presented to solve this problem, Signature based approach, layout structural and logo based approach. In this paper we proposed a framework for classify document image retrieval approaches, and then we evaluated these approaches based on important measures.

Hong Kong has long been famous for her skyrocketing dwelling price. The high cost of mortgage has clipped the wings of many high-educated working class and raise their expectation on quality of residential units. This paper study first instance court cases with regard to the quality problem in first hand residential units over the past 9 years. Results have shown that most of the developers in Hong Kong seldom overstated the quality of residential units and the majority of the cases which end up in court are caused by subcontractors' failure in providing merchantable quality products.

There is no doubt whatsoever, that the theme of this conference has been born of painful awareness of the effects of process malpractices that have eroded confidence in this industry and sector from which we all earn the gari on our families" tables. I am assuming that the aim of convening this discusses is to brainstorm for policies and strategies for eradication of these malpractices. It is also assumed that if eradication appears not to be immediately possible, to identify mitigation strategies upon which future eradication campaigns could be built. Should these be the objectives, I offer my congratulations to the planners and organisers of the conference.

A summary of the principal characteristics, problems, limitations and bene®ts of the integration of quality systems based on the ISO 9000 in Chilean construction projects, is presented. These implementation processes were carried out by dierent construction companies with no previous experience on quality systems or ISO 9000, at the requirement of one owner. The particular and general characteristics of the processes and the lessons learned are analysed according to the appraisal of the dierent participants. Special focus is given to the impact that quality systems had on the relationship between the owner and its contractors. Finally, some recommendations are proposed for a successful integration of quality systems in construction projects, as well as for future implementations in countries with limited experience on this regard. #

This paper reviews on the building contractors motivating factors on adopting the newly imposed quality assurance initiative in Malaysia’s construction industry. The quality assurance initiative named Quality Assessment System in Construction (QLASSIC) – The Construction Industry Standard (CIS) – CIS 7:2006. It is introduced by the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia (CIDB). This QLASSIC system consists of a building construction standard where all the contractors must follow the specifications, if adopting this system in their construction project. The literature commonly categorizes motivation factors into two types –internal and external. Both types of motivation factors, related to the benefits on adopting the QLASSIC system, are put into this study. Further analysis will be done to determine the motives and benefits relationship behind the adoption of the QLASSIC system in the construction projects.
