Dolly Parton

This text responds to Tehching Hsieh’s "One Year Performance 1980–1981: Time Clock Piece" (1980–1981). Through a reading of Dolly Parton’s contemporaneous antiwork anthem "9 to 5" (1980), I reflect on historical shifts in the ways that workers have been and continue to be exploited through techniques and technologies of time.

Country music is more than Appalachia's soundtrack. It is a record of Appalachia's history and evolution and one of the area's most significant contributions to the United States' popular culture. In this interactive session, teachers will explore the roots of country music traditions, the evolution of popular song structure, and a handful of songs that invite literary and rhetorical analysis -- all with the goal of moving country music from the margins to the center of English instruction.

Conheço muito bem o nome Dolly Parton, mas pouco do seu trabalho. Lembro vagamente do filme Como eliminar seu chefe (1980) e da música-tema, 9 to 5, cujo refrão me vem à mente mais porque era parte de uma coletânea de trilhas de cinema do que por tê-la ouvido no filme. Isso e mais uma figura loira e com peitos grandes eram minhas principais referências quando a Netflix me sugeriu Tocando o coração, série de histórias baseadas nas músicas de Dolly Parton e idealizada por ela. Pensei no combo música country + sul dos EUA = republicanos conservadores e encarei o primeiro episódio com muitos pés atrás. E tive que engolir o preconceito com farinha.
