Following World War I, as the 19th amendment helped redefine the role of American women in the public arena, a new model of womanhood, inspired by the "flappers", challenged the traditional approach to femininity. This article aims at analyzing how Il Progresso Italo- Americano and other Italian-American newspapers reacted to such changes in American society. Defending the old patriarchal values, which still prevailed among Southern European immigrants, most Italian-American journalists expressed their disapproval of the suffrage movement, attacked the "flappers", and ridiculed the feminists. In the name of their cultural heritage, they fiercely opposed the American model, and presented the Italian woman as an exemplary alternative. Even when Mussolini introduced in Italy an electoral reform which allowed a certain category of women to vote at the local level, the Italian-American press supported the project on the very ground that the Italian woman was above all a mother and a wife who was not given to erroneous idea of her place in society and who would therefore be reliable as a voter. By omitting to mention the struggle led by the existing feminist organizations in Italy, the Italian-American press thus purposely associated emancipation with Americanism, and transformed the debate over feminism into an ethnic debate.

British governor William Cosby brought a libel case against the publisher of The New York Weekly Journal, John Peter Zenger, for publishing commentary critical of Cosby’s government. Zenger was acquitted.

Scholars have often depicted the publishers of U.S. foreignlanguage newspapers as potential ethnic leaders who shaped their respective immigrant communities into cohesive groups, stood by the interests of their members, and voiced their claims. In particular, as newcomers were usually unacquainted with English and had to rely on newspapers published in their native country as a major source of knowledge and interpretation about politics in their host society, previous studies have generally contended that the foreign-language press could in theory enjoy significant influence on the political experience and electoral behavior of the nationality groups of European descent in the

In this paper I analyze the network structure of race blogs in relation to the broader political blogosphere and traditional media landscape. Findings show that race blogs exhibit a multi-level, homophilous link structure with respect to non-race blogs, and among race blogs. Race blogs also frame their content in racial terms, unlike their non-race blog counterparts. I argue that these differences set race blogs apart from political blogs and warrant using a different theoretical lens to understand their nature and role within the U.S. political and media landscape. Specifically, I argue that race blogs should be viewed not only through the theoretical lens of political and media influence, but also through the lens of collective action.

In 1917, after the United States joined the war in Europe and was no longer politically neutral, on the American front, the German ethnic press became a target for censors and critics. The general assumption was that German language papers bred disloyalty among German immigrant communities and posed a threat to the United States’ war efforts. This study explores the editorial and political views of the German-language press during the summer of 1917 by assessing the tone of a sample of German language mainstream newspapers during July 1, 1917 through September 30, 1917. The findings show that the overall coverage was less loyal to Imperial Germany than had been argued by U.S. officials and censors. In an effort to assimilate, German immigrant newspapers widely published the U.S. government’s official position, showed support for the American war effort, and focused on cultural affairs of the immigrant community.

Née sous la plume d’exilés révolutionnaires qui cherchaient en Amérique à la fois un refuge et une tribune d’où influer sur le sort de leur patrie, la presse italo-américaine se mua en une presse d’immigration plus classique reflétant les transformations, les succès et les difficultés des immigrés italiens qui s’installèrent aux États-Unis.

The phenomenon of the ethnic press in the context of Rio Grande do Sul was rich and can be included in the more general movement of the Italian diaspora worldwide. Today, the study of the ethnic press reflects the dynamic, which has characterized globalized society, such as human mobility, which appears to be the focus of historiography and of transnational research networks. Recent studies evidence the multiplicity of the role that was played by the ethnic press in the context of emigration and immigration. According to this premise, the present study aims to analyze the Italian ethnic press of Porto Alegre/RS, especially the contribution of the longest-lived newspaper «Stella d’Italia», published initially twice a week and then three times a week from 1902 to 1925, which was the most respected mouth-piece of the numerous Italian community in the state. Run by Adelchi Colnaghi from Milan, the newspaper proclaimed its independence as an advocate of Italian interests and institutions, especially schools and the promoter of Italian associativism

Within social relations in globalized and multilingual spaces affected by massive movements of people (e.g. Australia), globalisation encourages specificity at the micro-community level. "Ethnicity" here represents "a great source of comfort" (Spinner, 1994: 59) and community newspapers are indeed expressions of ethnicity, embodying an ongoing struggle between the multiple forces of globalisation represented by host and heritage cultures and languages, as well as providing an independent and meaningful voice for the community. This case study on the Italo-Australian community newspaper "Il Globo" explores translational aspects in the articles treating national issues in Australia ("Stati & Territori" section). Thanks to a senior journalist at "Il Globo" (IGJ 1 henceforth), I retrieved English source texts (ST) and published Italian target texts (TT), affording a privileged look into news translation practices and outcomes. A corpus of 12 published TTs was analysed against the STs that informed and guided IGJ's writing, paying special attention to how the journalist quoted her sources and dealt with cultural-specific items (CSIs, House, 2006). Finally, I discuss how this case study's results can contribute to and offer a different perspective on the complex issues that link globalisation, language, and power within migrants' communities and the role of ethnic media in today's highly globalised multilingual and liquid (western) societies.

The foreign-language press is an extremely varied, complex phenomenon, specifically defined as the press printed in languages that are different from the official language(s) of the country where it is published. While often underestimated because they are perceived as marginal or even " foreign " , foreign-language periodicals actually account for a substantial portion of the national presses of most countries and contribute to the development of very important historical and contemporary phenomena. Specifically, they can be used as an alternative way to spread ideas and practices both in the country where they are printed and transnationally. The aim of the sixth international meeting of the Transfopress network (http://transfopresschcsc.wixsite.com/transfopress) is to come up with reflections on the role played by the foreign-language press in phenomena of protest and dissent, as well as in the experiences of political exile.

at M € unchen Russian ethnic press in the United States was examined to understand how political identity and loyalties are negotiated in conflictual situations. News coverage of eight foreign policy controversies was studied in terms of tone, emphasis-or lack thereof-on the conflict between the US and Russia, and attributes the newspapers assigned to the two countries. Most of the coverage was neutral in tone. The conflict was mostly de-emphasized. Attributes assigned to the two countries were in the middle of the conflict-cooperation spectrum, avoiding the extremes. These findings suggest that Russian American ethnic newspapers provide a balanced coverage of both the country of origin and that of adoption, thereby pointing to a hybrid political identity of their readers. However, when US security interests are perceived to be at stake, the said press tends to be more pro-American.

The Transfopress Network welcomes papers on the following topic : " The Foreign-Language Press: New Forms, Contents and Functions ". As specific material and cultural artefacts, foreign-language periodicals call for a multifaceted approach in order to unravel the intricate connections between text and context, forms and meanings, language and message as well as the complex interactions between editors, printers, authors and readers. With this in mind, of particular interest for us in this conference is the global circulation of media culture at a time when print communication was becoming a mass phenomenon in the 19 th and early 20 th century. Editorial models, formats and contents were becoming part of a continuous flow of journalistic innovations, information and cultural practices and we would like to explore the channels through which these transfers occurred and how they affected the foreign-language periodicals in different cultural contexts. Another area of investigation regards the multiple functions fulfilled by the foreign-language press. Following David Abrahamson's call to go " beyond the mirror metaphor " 1 , foreign-language periodicals should be considered as both descriptive and prescriptive and it would be interesting to explore how they not only reflected but also shaped their environment, what kind of public space of discussion they created and to what extent they were tools of empowerment for the communities of readers they addressed. Following these two broad lines of inquiry, proposals are invited on the following topics: 1 st line of enquiry: The global circulation of media culture and how it affected foreign-language periodicals.-Diffusion and transfer of editorial models and practices. Foreign-language periodicals were the products of their time and a media environment that was both international and local. To what extent did they borrow from existing models abroad and from the press of their host country? Or did they innovate in creating sui generis models? How did this affect their materiality (periodicity, layout , hierarchy between the various sections and columns)?-Journalistic networks and Magazine Editors. Who were the men and women behind these journalistic enterprises? Were they attached to particular institutions or part of national and transnational media networks (personal and/or institutional)? Or were they single media entrepreneurs?

O TRANSFOPRESS Brasil é um grupo que pesquisa a imprensa periódica publicada em língua estrangeira no Brasil, tem como sede nacional a Unversidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" - UNESP e congrega pesquisadores de várias instituições, oferecendo às pessoas nele envolvidas um quadro no qual a reflexão sobre a importância desta imprensa pode ser conduzida.
Desde 2012 o grupo desenvolve pesquisa sobre a imprensa italiana, francesa, alemã, japonesa, armênia, polonesa entre outros idiomas que têm encontrado interesse em pesquisadores de vários estados e mesmo entre estrangeiros que estudam a imprensa alófona publicada em território brasileiro.
Provenientes de várias áreas, o objetivo inicial é fazer um extenso levantamento das fontes primárias de forma a recuperar este corpus pouco conhecido.
Os resultados iniciais têm sido apresentados em eventos (I Rencontre TRANSFOPRESS - Paris - 2013) e estão sendo organizadas publicações.
Neste ano de 2014, o Brasil foi escolhido para sediar o II Encontro TRANSFOPRESS que receberá pesquisadores brasileiros e estrangeiros para discutir os avanços de pesquisa. Está em curso um Acordo de Cooperação entre a UNESP e o CHCSC que fomentará a mobilidade docente e discente no âmbito do projeto.

Le réseau international de chercheurs « Transfopress » se fixe pour objet la promotion d’un objet patrimonial matériel totalement délaissé, tant en France que dans quasiment tous les autres pays du monde : la presse publiée dans des langues autres que la ou les langues nationales. Il propose, ainsi, de renouveler l’écriture de l’histoire de la presse, mais également celle de la construction des identités et des cultures nationales.
