Este artículo analiza la figura del corresponsal catalán Arturo Cuyás Armengol, quien redactó artículos para El Diario de la Marina que fueron reproducidos por diversos periódicos mexicanos. Aquí se establece una semblanza biográfica de Cuyás a partir de la información que proporcionan los periódicos alojados en la Hemeroteca Nacional Digital de México. Esta herramienta de investigación también se utilizó para identificar las corresponsalías de Cuyás que fueron adquiridas por redactores de periódicos mexicanos para mantener informados a sus lectores sobre la situación que ocurría en la Unión Americana. Su mirada crítica sobre la cotidianidad política, económica, social y cultural de los estadounidenses en la que se muestra que veía a ese país como un enemigo para España ante su política expansionista.

The myriads of publications that meticulously detail the United States' influence in postwar Italy are nearly abundant. Moreover, there is a vast historiography dedicated to the study of American perspectives on Mussolini alongside the support for Fascism from within the Italian-American community. However, this work addresses the United States' relationship with Fascist through an analysis of transatlantic economic concerns during the Interwar Years.

The innumerable publications that detail the American influence in Postwar Italy are well known. Additionally, there is wide-ranging field of historical thought dedicated to the study of American perspectives on Mussolini as well as the documented support for Fascism within the Italian-American community. However, this contribution highlights how the Fascist Party viewed the political culture of the United States alongside informing how Fascist Italy interpreted American foreign policies on the eve of a Second World War. Overall, this work examines the Fascist reactions to American diplomacy in the Interwar years while also weighing the effect of American foreign policies on Italian Fascist colonial expansion.

The New Deal made a direct and dramatic difference in the day to day lives of union members and they, in turn, had an effect on the New Deal. They were key players in a complex set of evolving strategies to end the depression and start an economic recovery through legislation, organizing, strikes, collective bargaining, enforcement, education, and consumer activism. Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady and fellow worker, often supported their efforts both publicly and behind the scenes. By including union women in the analysis, the roles played by union members and Eleanor Roosevelt in the New Deal begin to emerge. 2

This article argues for the study of translation in U.S. immigrant newspapers, a distinct intercultural context largely ignored in Translation Studies re search. The article outlines methodological approaches for the study of translation in immigrant periodicals with the aim of identifying the various roles played by translation in diasporic communities. Based on approaches and methods developed in the field of Translation Studies for researching translation in newspapers, the analysis focuses on the (in)visibility of the translations, the direction of translation flows, and the domain of the translated texts. These categories contribute to our understanding of diaspora as a distinct site of translational activity, through which immigrant identities are constructed and relationships between the immigrant community and the dominant culture, between the immigrant community and its native language and culture, and between different generations within the immigrant community, are negotiated. Preliminary research of two immigrant foreign-language newspapers published in the U.S. in the interwar period, the Slovenian Prosveta, and the Russian Novoe Russkoe Slovo, has documented a consistent presence of translations. The results suggest that translation in these two newspapers was deployed to different ends, reflecting the divergent political orientations of the newspapers and the distinct make-up of these immigrant communities. The study also reveals translation to be a tool of government surveillance.

How do immigrant communities and minorities "talk back", if and when they do, to the depictions of them in mainstream media sources in relation to organised crime? One way to know how is through the ethnic press's editorial commentary. By analysing selected editorials in the Italian-language newspaper Il Globo (founded in 1959), in the period from 1979 to 1989, this chapter offers a case study that allows us to understand the ethnic press's reaction to mainstream media reporting of organised crime dealing with such cases as the Donald Mackay murder. This chapter argues that Il Globo opposed "sensationalism" in the Australian press with "negationism", or rather its liberal progressive variant, and by fighting what it thought to be misguided perceptions of immigration and ethnicities in relation to crime among the general public.

at M € unchen Russian ethnic press in the United States was examined to understand how political identity and loyalties are negotiated in conflictual situations. News coverage of eight foreign policy controversies was studied in terms of tone, emphasis-or lack thereof-on the conflict between the US and Russia, and attributes the newspapers assigned to the two countries. Most of the coverage was neutral in tone. The conflict was mostly de-emphasized. Attributes assigned to the two countries were in the middle of the conflict-cooperation spectrum, avoiding the extremes. These findings suggest that Russian American ethnic newspapers provide a balanced coverage of both the country of origin and that of adoption, thereby pointing to a hybrid political identity of their readers. However, when US security interests are perceived to be at stake, the said press tends to be more pro-American.

This article explores how hegemonic masculinity forged discourses of modern statesmanship in the United States and Italy in the first three decades of the twentieth century. It unpacks the ‘presidential masculinity’ of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and compares these gendered performances of political leadership in the United States to Benito Mussolini's Fascist rule in Italy during the 1920s. In doing so, this article contends that the manliness of these three modern leaders rested on a contrasting of pairs: if Roosevelt embodied the hegemonic ideal of the ‘frontiersman-as-president’, Wilson personified its ‘unmanly’, bourgeois-liberal countertype and thereby engendered the initially hospitable view of Mussolini's Fascist masculinity in the United States during the Jazz Age. The article covers the publications in The Atlantic Monthly to reveal how the American disillusion with Wilson's liberal internationalism transformed the Duce into a Fascist surrogate for Roosevelt. In a decade of political, economic and social upheaval, the transatlantic ‘public relations state’ in both the United States and Italy discursively positioned Mussolini as the personification of the masculine ideals of acumen, willpower and virility for the American public; a ‘Doctor-Dictator’ who, akin to Roosevelt, became a symbol of modern manliness that signified stability, progress and reform. In the process, the Duce's Fascist manhood shaped hegemonic ideals of statesmanship across the Atlantic while hinting at the paltry support for the liberal democracies of the West.

Ashley Rindsberg should be awarded the John Peter Zenger Prize as a reminder to those of us who do not remember our civic’ classes in Junior High School, one of the first court cases involving freedom of the press in America took place in 1734. British governor William Cosby brought a libel case against the publisher of The New York Weekly Journal, John Peter Zenger, for publishing commentary critical of Cosby’s government. Zenger was acquitted.

Within social relations in globalized and multilingual spaces affected by massive movements of people (e.g. Australia), globalisation encourages specificity at the micro-community level. “Ethnicity” here represents “a great source of comfort” (Spinner, 1994: 59) and community newspapers are indeed expressions of ethnicity, embodying an ongoing struggle between the multiple forces of globalisation represented by host and heritage cultures and languages, as well as providing an independent and meaningful voice for the community. Published between 1936 and 1938, Il Lavoratore was a politically aggressive Italian Canadian periodical established by the Communist Party of Canada with the aim to reach out to the more “politically evolved” Italian Canadian communities and support both workers’ rights and the antifascist cause. This essay gives a first overview of Il Lavoratore, emphasizing its role as shaper of a transnational antifascist sentiment in inter-war Canada, observing how its editors resorted to specific imageries and rhetorical patterns in order to expose and condemn the oppressive nature of local and international fascism.

Allo scoppio della Rivoluzione francese, l'Italia era ciò che era stata da più di mille anni, un mosaico di piccoli Stati gelosi, se non attivamente ostili, l'uno dell'altro. Mai dai tempi dell'Impero Romano la penisola era stata effettivamente unita sotto un unico dominio. Toccava a Napoleone livellare le barriere delle rivalità locali e portare in Italia almeno una buona amministrazione e un approccio all'unità politica. Inoltre, ha risvegliato nella mente dei patrioti italiani la convinzione che la salvezza dell'Italia risiedesse nell'unità nazionale. A Sant'Elena insisteva ancora sul fatto che "l'Italia è una nazione".
I diplomatici che hanno smaltito le fortune dell'Europa a Vienna nel 1815 fecero breve il lavoro dell'Italia napoleonica. Era diviso in nove stati con governi che erano tutti reazionari e dispotici. Quando il Congresso si è aggiornato, l'Italia era, nelle parole di Metternich, "semplicemente un'espressione geografica". Quasi tutti i principi che governavano gli stati italiani erano burattini austriaci: duchi austriaci viceré austriaci in Lombardia e Veneto. Metternich strinse inoltre un'alleanza con il re di Napoli e raggiunse un'intesa con il papa, che praticamente mise i loro affari politici sotto la direzione austriaca. L'unico che non dipendeva dall'Austria era il re di Sardegna Piemonte.
Sebbene i diplomatici a Vienna dividessero l'Italia, non riuscirono a placare lo spirito nazionale che Napoleone aveva risvegliato. In superficie gli austriaci continuarono ad esercitare il loro dominio, mentre sotterranei si facevano sistematici preparativi per il risorgimento. Un fattore importante nell'agitazione erano le società segrete, la più grande delle quali era la Carbonari, o Bruciatori di carbone. Sotto le parole d'ordine "libertà e indipendenza" i Carbonari erano incessantemente attivi in un'entusiasmante opposizione e rivoluzione contro il dominio straniero. Un altro fattore importante nel determinare il risorgimento è stata l'appassionata leadership di idealisti e intellettuali. I tre uomini ai quali è dovuto soprattutto il raggiungimento dell'unità italiana sono Cavour, Mazzini e Garibaldi.

In 1917, after the United States joined the war in Europe and was no longer politically neutral, on the American front, the German ethnic press became a target for censors and critics. The general assumption was that German language papers bred disloyalty among German immigrant communities and posed a threat to the United States’ war efforts. This study explores the editorial and political views of the German-language press during the summer of 1917 by assessing the tone of a sample of German language mainstream newspapers during July 1, 1917 through September 30, 1917. The findings show that the overall coverage was less loyal to Imperial Germany than had been argued by U.S. officials and censors. In an effort to assimilate, German immigrant newspapers widely published the U.S. government’s official position, showed support for the American war effort, and focused on cultural affairs of the immigrant community.

In 1927 the Italian anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were executed in Boston following a murder trial that was widely denounced for its anti-labour and anti-immigrant bias. From 1921 the campaign to save the two men powerfully mobilised labour internationalism and triggered waves of protests across the world. This article examines the important contributions made by Irish and Irish-American radicals to the Sacco-Vanzetti campaign. Mary Donovan was a leading member of the Sacco-Vanzetti Defense Committee, and a second-generation Irish union organiser and member of Boston's James Connolly Club. In the 1920s she travelled to Ireland twice and appealed to Irish and Irish American labour to support the campaign. At the same time, Donovan and many of the activists considered here held ambiguous personal and political relationships with Ireland. Transnational Irish radicalism in the early-twentieth century is most commonly considered in nationalist terms. Taking a distinctly non-Irish cause – the Sacco-Vanzetti case of 1920–7 – allows us to look from a different perspective at the global Irish Revolution and reveals how radical labour currents reached into Irish and Irish-American circles during the revolutionary era, though the response to the campaign also indicates a receding internationalism in the immediate aftermath of Irish independence.

The phenomenon of the ethnic press in the context of Rio Grande do Sul was rich and can be included in the more general movement of the Italian diaspora worldwide. Today, the study of the ethnic press reflects the dynamic, which has characterized globalized society, such as human mobility, which appears to be the focus of historiography and of transnational research networks. Recent studies evidence the multiplicity of the role that was played by the ethnic press in the context of emigration and immigration. According to this premise, the present study aims to analyze the Italian ethnic press of Porto Alegre/RS, especially the contribution of the longest-lived newspaper «Stella d’Italia», published initially twice a week and then three times a week from 1902 to 1925, which was the most respected mouth-piece of the numerous Italian community in the state. Run by Adelchi Colnaghi from Milan, the newspaper proclaimed its independence as an advocate of Italian interests and institutions, especially schools and the promoter of Italian associativism

Finally, I discuss how this case study's results can contribute to and offer a different perspective on the complex issues that link globalisation, language, and power within migrants' communities and the role of ethnic media in today's highly globalised multilingual and liquid (western) societies.

My presentation is about the origin of philosophical psychology in the modern age from Juan Luis Vives (1493-1540) to Franz Brentano (1838-1917). My aim is to show how during three centuries psychology arises from humanistic studies to an experimental science in Wundt. This new discipline transforms itself from a study of inner experience, strictly linked to philosophy, to full science. My claim is there are two traditions in modern philosophy which represent two different approaches to the study of human mind: one originated from Vives' book De anima et vita (1538) and another one from Wolff's psychology. Both flow into Brentano's Psychology from an empirical standpoint. These two modern viewpoints set up phenomenology.

R aymond Aron spent his life defending "liberal democracy." What is the status of liberal democracy and the study of it today? Any "casual look" shows a close relationship between authoritarian and poor countries, on the one hand, and democratic regimes and rich countries, on the other. This question has been part of the research agenda since at least 1960, when Lipset 1 questioned the relationship between democracy and development. Empirical research distinguishes two "causal mechanisms" in order to explain the correlation: democracies emerge in economically developing dictatorships either by an "endogenous" process or for other "exogenous" reasons, but they survive longer in developed countries and so there is an accumulation of democratic regimes in these countries. The first mechanism assumes that dictatorships die when countries ruled by them develop because such countries can no longer be governed effectively by command or because-more crudely stated-the political systems there are determined by economic factors. This is a mechanism consistent with modernization theory: there is one general process, which begins with industrialization and urbanization, goes through education and mass communication, and culminates in social and political mobilization and democratization. Adam Przeworski summarizes thus: GDP per capita is the most suitable indicator predicting the type of regime. 2 If so, China will be democratic when it develops. A second type of mechanism was also ambiguously suggested by Lipset, 3 but has only recently been explored. It is based on the assumption that if democracies emerge randomly during the development stage, they are more likely to survive in a rich country, and there is also a cumulative effect of monotonic convergence, 4 which is also consistent with the correlation between the two factors. Between 1881 and 1914, the United States experienced its largest influx of Jewish immigrants in its history. This process coincided with an era of political reform and cultural change known as the Progressive Era (1890-1920). This paper shall show in what ways Jewish Americans and new Jewish immigrants conformed to or resisted progressive tendencies within the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Italian migrants in the United States have been often associated to the tendency to neglect the importance of culture as an instrument of upward social mobility. Traditionally perceiving culture as a hegemonic tool of the elites, Italian migrants in the United States, who had a predominantly peasant background, were supposedly uninterested in educating their children, rather preferring that they drop out school to add with their work a supplemental income necessary to face the daily necessities of migrant families. Based on a long-standing prejudice, this supposed Italian-American disinterest towards culture and education has been revisited by some scholars, who have revaluated the migrant attitude towards the cultural realm. In the first part, this essay will offer an overview of the different scholarly views on the relationship between Italian-Americans, culture and education. In the second part, it will discuss how Italian-Americans approached the usage of the Italian language, the native idiom that was disappearing in the Little Italies with the progression of newer generations, which inevitably favoured the recourse to English. The foreign-language press is an extremely varied, complex phenomenon, specifically defined as the press printed in languages that are different from the official language(s) of the country where it is published. While often underestimated because they are perceived as marginal or even " foreign " , foreign-language periodicals actually account for a substantial portion of the national presses of most countries and contribute to the development of very important historical and contemporary phenomena. Specifically, they can be used as an alternative way to spread ideas and practices both in the country where they are printed and transnationally. The aim of the sixth international meeting of the Transfopress network (http://transfopresschcsc.wixsite.com/transfopress) is to come up with reflections on the role played by the foreign-language press in phenomena of protest and dissent, as well as in the experiences of political exile.
