This book was produced in a Book Sprint at the Senselab, Concordia's Distributing the Insensible event in December 2016. It's an attempt to explain the anarchive in a useful and practical way, for a lot of different contexts outside the academy. NB: there are more authors in the book who aren't on this platform. Archives and Special Collections at the Wilson Library of the University of La Verne, located in inland southern California, offers an informative case study of descriptive practices and metadata attached to digital collections at a small liberal arts college. Since recruiting a staff specifically tasked to manage the archives, the Wilson Library has increased the number of collections available to patrons online through the creation of a digital collections Web page. Digitized, hosted collections include the papers of a faculty member from the early 20th century, photographs of early La Verne, historic local newspapers, and manuscript sources regarding Japanese American internment. Metadata fields at Wilson Library have developed to encompass a greater variety of contextual information about digitized records, improving users' ability to put the collections to use for research. Ultimately, this case study demonstrates what a library at a small university can accomplish with a dedicated staff and a clear objective, even with limited resources.

Esta pesquisa visa a apresentação de possíveis correlações entre as fontes iconográficas, os arquivos e a memória. Compreende-se que este estudo, em termos metodológicos, fundamenta-se em uma
pesquisa de natureza básica, e no tocando aos objetivos é classificada como uma pesquisa exploratória a partir da realização de levantamentos bibliográficos e de temporalidade transversal. Assim, foi
estruturada em três segmentos, onde inicialmente optou-se pela apresentação das fontes iconográficas, sua caracterização e uso na historiografia contemporânea. A partir destes elementos
buscou-se exibir uma breve reflexão sobre o termo arquivo para a área de Arquivologia e enquanto um lugar de memória tomando por base o conceito dado por Nora (1993). Fundamentado nestes
estudos buscou-se relacionar o potencial evocador de memórias das fontes iconográficas a partir da apresentação de duas metodologias de trabalho, explicitadas pelos autores Kossoy (2001) e Gerverau ([s/p]), para análise de acervos de imagem. Diante do exposto buscou-se evidenciar o papel fundamental das fontes iconográficas enquanto fonte de pesquisa para construção de histórias e memórias institucionais. Entende-se que os resultados apresentados nesta pesquisa são parciais, e podem vir a ser complementados posteriormente.

This research aims at the presentation of possible correlations between iconographic sources, archives and memory. It is understood that this study, in methodological terms, is based on a research of a basic nature, and in touching on the objectives it is classified as an exploratory research based on bibliographical surveys and transversal temporality. Thus, it was structured in three segments, where initially it was chosen by the presentation of the iconographic sources, its characterization and use in the contemporary historiography. From these elements we sought to show a brief reflection on the term archive for the Archivology area and as a place of memory based on the concept given by Nora (1993). Based on these studies, we attempted to relate the evocative potential of memories from iconographic sources through the presentation of two work methodologies, explained by the authors Kossoy (2001) and Gerverau ([s / p]) for image collections analysis. In view of the above, we sought to highlight the fundamental role of iconographic sources as a source of research for the construction of stories and institutional memories. It is understood that the results presented in this research are partial, and may be supplemented later.

La raccolta di saggi proposta intende provare a rispondere ad una serie di quesiti incentrati sul rapporto tra archivi e società negli stati italiani tra Medioevo ed Età moderna. Quale era il personale addetto alla produzione e alla cura delle carte? E in quale modo esso era suddiviso al proprio interno? Dai notai dei comuni italiani fino ai più organizzati archivi d’età moderna, diverse categorie di personale specializzato –  quali notai, cancellieri, segretari, ma anche archivisti veri e propri, ecc. – hanno contribuito alle diverse fasi della costruzione ed accumulazione degli archivi? Quale ruolo avevano questi ufficiali nella società del tempo? Quale tipo di provenienza sociale? L’impiego in cancelleria garantiva una promozione sociale? E quale educazione ricevevano le diverse categorie di segretari ed archivisti? Da Firenze a Venezia, noti esempi di cancellieri umanisti dimostrano che alcuni di essi spiccavano per le loro qualità intellettuali e letterarie, e non solo strettamente professionali e tecniche. In entrambe queste repubbliche l’organizzazione degli addetti alla cancelleria era regolata da apposite norme interne, e a Venezia lo stato organizzava perfino la loro formazione. Qui una legislazione accurata determinava elementi come la durata dell’ufficio o la suddivisione del lavoro tra i diversi funzionari, ma non mancavano neppure interessi di carattere socio-politico, come ad esempio la parentela o l’appartenenza a certi gruppi di potere. Nelle signorie, al contrario la rilevanza data al ruolo dei segretari, favorì lo sviluppo di relazioni di carattere interpersonale tra principe e segretario stesso, scelto perciò anche per la sua appartenenza al gruppo dei suoi consiglieri più fidati, oltre che per le sue capacità politiche e amministrative.
Su di un piano prettamente sociale si possono comparare queste due realtà? E secondo quali termini? Quali sono, inoltre, le differenze tra il personale delle cancellerie e degli archivi dei regni dell’Italia meridionale, rispetto a quello delle coeve entità istituzionali dell’Italia comunale e delle signorie centro-settentrionali? Si è parlato molto della transizione da un modello nel quale il personale di cancelleria era composto prevalentemente da ufficiali dalla formazione notarile o umanistica, ad un altro caratterizzato piuttosto dalla necessità di trovare funzionari che rispondessero prima di tutto alla richiesta dei governi centrali di avere personale fidato e fedele. L’occasione di questo convegno sarà buona anche per fare il punto su questi temi.
D’altra parte, l’intenzione è quella di usare i documenti stessi per documentare la formazione culturale e gli interessi culturali dei cancellieri: componimenti poetici, piccoli ghirigori sbozzati da segretari annoiati sui margini o sulle carte di guardia dei registri rivelano l’inclinazione culturale e il mondo personale dell’autore.

'The Big Sleep', Patrick Pound, with an essay by Daniel Palmer, Stills Gallery, 2015. 'The Big Sleep' was published in case bound limited edition (50 copies) and a paperback edition and launched at Paris Photo 2015 in association with an exhibition of the same name with Stills Gallery at the Grand Palais. The book reproduces a collection of found photographs of people who are at rest. Some are asleep, others may well be dead. The photographs were all bought on eBay and come from deceased estates, defunct newspaper archives and cinema promotion stills.

Cities are not only conurbations with high social and economic density, but also places of construction, preservation and sometimes even elimination of memory. They are not least the subject of historical research itself. It is precisely in the culture of memory and its "gaps in memory" that specific urban identities and practices from the Middle Ages to the time of the nation-states and beyond can be proven and researched.
The contributions in this volume illustrate the potential of the theme "City between the Preservation of Memory and the Loss of Memory"; they stimulate not only further research, but also in-depth reflection on the historicity of our culture, on how it deals with history, memory and oblivion, and on the specific role of cities within these processes.

Städte sind nicht nur Ballungsräume mit hoher sozialer und wirtschaftlicher Verdichtung, sondern auch Orte der Konstruktion, der Bewahrung und gelegentlich sogar der Beseitigung von Erinnerung. Sie sind nicht zuletzt Gegenstand der historischen Forschung selbst. Gerade in der Gedächtniskultur und ihren »Erinnerungslücken« lassen sich spezifische städtische Identitäten und Praktiken vom Mittelalter bis in die Zeit der Nationalstaaten und darüber hinaus nachweisen sowie erforschen.
Die Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes verdeutlichen das Potential der Thematik »Stadt zwischen Erinnerungsbewahrung und Gedächtnisverlust«; sie regen nicht nur zu weiteren Forschungen an, sondern auch zu vertieftem Nachdenken über die Geschichtlichkeit unserer Kultur, über ihren Umgang mit Geschichte, Erinnerung und Vergessen sowie über die spezifische Rolle von Städten innerhalb dieser Prozesse.
