Individuals at increased risk of developing breast cancer due to their family history of the disease face a number of uncertainties. Personal cancer risk estimates are imprecise and current methods for early detection or prevention are not 100% effective. It is therefore not surprising that adverse psychosocial outcomes have been described within this population. Research attempting to predict the incidence of distress and dysfunction in individuals at increased risk of cancer has been largely a-theoretical and has overlooked a number of potentially important predictive variables. In particular, the influence of personal experience of cancer through involvement with affected relatives has been neglected. There are strong theoretical grounds for hypothesising that dimensions of personal experience may influence response to cancer risk. Correlation between Family Support and Illness Perception in Breast
Cancer Patients who undergo Chemotherapy at Dr. Mohammad
Hoesin Hospital of Palembang

Breast cancer is malignant neoplasm from parenchyma. Chemotherapy is one of the treatments for breast cancer. It has impacts on physical function, such as hair fall, dry skin and stiff body. It also can cause negative illness perception that the patients undergoing it need family support. Therefore, this study aims at finding out the correlation between family support and illness perception in breast cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy. It was a cross sectional study with 67 respondents chosen using total sampling. The data were analyzed using an alternative test, fisher exact test. The results show that there is a significant correlation between family support and illness perception in breast cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy with pvalue of 0.004.
Family support can contribute in increasing positive illness perception, this shows that breast cancer patients need their family support

Musculoskeletal disorders are among the main causes of short- and long-term disability. Identify the methods for assessing multidimensional components of illness representations. An electronic literature search (French, English) from 1980 to the present was conducted in medical, paramedical and social science databases using predetermined key words. After screening titles and abstracts based on a specific set of criteria, sixty-four articles were reviewed. Qualitative approaches for assessing illness representation were found mainly in the fields of anthropology and sociology and were based on the explanatory models of illness. лезни значительно влияют на выбор людьми
стратегий сохранения и поддержания здо-
ровья. В этой статье показана устойчивость
традиционных представлений о здоровье
и болезни, бытующих среди кыргызов. Дан
анализ роли кыргызских народных целите-
лей, которые временами пользовались под-
держкой, а временами сталкивались с без-
различием или пренебрежением властей, но
сейчас могут свободно работать на рынке.
Методология: Статья основана на этногра-
фическом полевом исследовании, прове-
денном в период с 2011 по 2013 г. в Бишкеке,
Кыргызстан. В работе использовались
такие качественные методы, как неструк-
турированные или частично структуриро-
ванные интервью, беседы и наблюдение за
участниками.
Результаты: Выяснено, что популярность кы-
ргызских целителей в значительной степени
объясняется согласованностью представ-
лений населения о причинах и проявлениях
болезни с теми методами, которые предлага-
ют для борьбы с недугами те, кто практикует
целительство. В числе иных факторов, обу-
словливающих прочное положение целите-
лей в обществе, следует назвать недостатки
в работе системы здравоохранения, весьма
распространенное недоверие врачам,
а также нестабильность политической, эко-
номической и социальной ситуации. В Кыр-
гызстане роль народных целителей высоко
оценивается частью сообщества психиатров
и предпринимались попытки сотрудничать
с целителями в рамках конкретных проектов.
Выводы: Основываясь на результатах ис-
следования, автор делает вывод о важной
роли целителей в кыргызском обществе. При
определении политики, направленной на
охрану здоровья населения, организаторы
здравоохранения и медицинские работники
должны учитывать культурные особенности
и их влияние на выбор людьми вариантов
лечения.

To evaluate the relationship among quality of life, temperament, illness perception, and mental turmoil in patients affected by chronic daily headache with concomitant medication overuse headache. Participants were 116 consecutive adult outpatients admitted to the Department of General Medicine of the Sant’Andrea Hospital in Rome, between January 2007 and December 2007 with a diagnosis of chronic daily headache (illness duration >5 years). Patients were administered the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-autoquestionnaire version (TEMPS-A), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D), the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ), the Suicide Score Scale (SSS), and the Quality of Life Index (QL-Index). Twenty-eight percent of the patients evidenced moderate to severe depression, and 35% evidenced severe hopelessness. Analyses also indicated that quality of life, temperament, illness perception, and psychological turmoil are associated. However, a hierarchical multivariate regression analysis with quality of life as dependent variable indicated that only a model with mental turmoil variables may fit data; further, only the MINI suicidal intent resulted associated with quality of life (standardized regression coefficient = −0.55; t = −3.06; P < 0.01). Suicide risk may play a central role in affecting the quality of life of patients with chronic headache. The investigation of the interplay of factors that precipitate suicide risk should include assessment of chronic headache and its effects on wellbeing.

Based on the predictions of the attachment theory and the Common Sense Model of illness perceptions, the current study focused on the role played by illness perceptions in explaining the path linking attachment orientations to negative affect during recovery from cardiac illness. We predicted two putative mechanisms: (1) illness perceptions would mediate the direct association between attachment-related insecurity (especially attachment anxiety) and levels of distress at follow-up and (2) illness perceptions would interact with attachment orientations (attachment avoidance in particular) in explaining patients&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; distress. The sample consisted of 111 male patients admitted to the Cardiac Care Unit of the Meir Medical Center, located in the central region of Israel. Patients completed a measure of attachment orientations during hospitalization (baseline). One month later, patients&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; illness perceptions were measured. Patients&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; depression and anxiety symptoms were measured at baseline and at the six-month follow-up. The associations between attachment-related anxiety and anxiety symptoms at follow-up were fully mediated by illness perceptions. Attachment-related avoidance was found to interact with illness perceptions in the prediction of depressive symptoms at follow-up. The findings shed light on the possible dynamics among personality, cognitive appraisals, and affect regulation efforts when coping with illness.
