In manufacturing facilities, shipping and receiving traditionally have been concentrated in one or two areas of the building. The widespread introduction of just-in-time shipping policies in US manufacturing companies during the past 15 years, as well as the common use of decentralized receiving in the Japanese automobile industry, has motivated the consideration (and occasionally the adoption) of dock configurations to support decentralized receiving (also known as perimeter receiving). By providing multiple access points along the perimeter of the building, decentralized receiving generally reduces the time and cost associated with moving purchased parts to the locations within the facility where they are used, but also results in increased cost of construction, maintenance, and operation for docks and associated truck access/egress, as well as additional interior floorspace requirements. We develop an optimization-based procedure to determine which of several possible dock areas to construct, how many doors or gates each should have, how many unloading and internal material handling staff should be assigned to each group, and which inbound materials each group should handle. We consider the amortized cost of constructing and equipping the docks, the amortized cost of material handling equipment to support the unloaders and material handlers, the cost of operating the material handling equipment, and labor costs for both unloading and internal material handling.

Growing firms often find themselves strapped for money. A gap in cash is created when bills are paid weeks before cash comes in from customers. The cash gap can be shortened by concentrating efforts on fast moving inventory, implementing a just-in-time inventory model, negotiating extended credit terms to suppliers, and getting cash out of customers through discount programs and credit card transactions. Only after exhausting these alternatives does factoring typically make sense. Factoring provides quick access to cash through sales of receivables. The cash gap is shortened to the extent factoring brings in money earlier than receivables normally would. In general, firms that sell receivables immediately receive a percentage of the outstanding accounts sold. Supply chain management (SCM) is a concept that has flourished in manufacturing, originating from Just-In-Time (JIT) production and logistics. Today, SCM represents an autonomous managerial concept, although still largely dominated by logistics. SCM endeavors to observe the entire scope of the supply chain. In the pharmaceutical industry, systems for improving operational effectiveness and efficiency are becoming more and more popular. In this paper, developments in the industry’s improvements in operational effectiveness and efficiency have been analyzed. A holistic model is presented which builds the basis for the presented study results. The study includes data gathered from pharmaceutical production sites in surveys in 2004 and 2009. The analysis is divided according to the four sub-systems: Total Productive Maintenance, Total Quality Management, Just-in-Time, and the Management System. For each sub-system, key performance indicators and associated elements (practices and instruments) from 2004 to 2009 are investigated. The data indicates that the industry did make continuous steps towards “Excellence in Operations” between 2004 and 2009. Pharmaceutical companies took control over their former low asset utilization and managed to improve the efficiency of their quality systems; however, they are still far away from having any kind of “continuous flow”, smooth production scheduling or make-to-order manufacturing. It can be said that most of the companies are still working on the effectiveness side rather than focusing on the efficiency side.

The ABC Company is facing the problems of the suppliers. But the positive thing is that it can be controllable. The vast amount of heterogeneous information sources available on the Internet demands advanced solutions for acquiring, mediating, and maintaining relevant information for the common user. Intelligent information agents are autonomous computational software entities that are especially meant to (1) provide pro-active resource discovery, (2) resolve information impedance of information consumers and providers, and (3) offer value-added information services and products. These agents are supposed to cope with the difficulties associated with the information overload of the user, preferably just in time.Based on a systematic classification of intelligent information agents, this paper presents an overview of the basic key enabling technologies needed to build such agents, and respective examples of information agent systems currently deployed on the Internet.
