Kavafis Constantinos

A oggi la letteratura su Pasolini e i classici antichi parla di cinema, teatro, traduzioni: studiose e studiosi non si sono dimenticati di guardare anche ai due Meridiani poetici, ma l'hanno fatto sempre marginalmente; la mia ricerca dottorale non si è però premurata solo di studiare le poesie, bensì di mettere a fuoco per la prima volta 'tutto' il corpus "greco" e "latino" di Pasolini, dai primi versi incerti fino a Petrolio/Vas; e accanto agli autori già noti (Eschilo, Sofocle, Euripide, Plauto, Petronio, Saffo) è riemersa una folta schiera di poeti antichi ispiratori di 'poesie' (in senso cocteauiano) più e meno note: da Lucilio a Virgilio, da Ecateo a Luciano, da Alceo a Pindaro, da Ibico a Orazio, etc. More or less all the scholars have pointed out Pasolini's approach to Greek tragedy, but the Italian poet was inspired by many other ancient colleagues; my PhD thesis tries to shed light on all these Greek and Roman 'poets' – poets in the cocteauean sense – hitherto omitted: namely Homer, Alcaeus, Sappho, Hecataeus, Ibycus, Pindar, Lucilius, Virgil, Horace, Petronius, Martial, Lucian, etc. Obviously, since I have studied the complete works of Pasolini (movies, dramas, novels, etc.), Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides are included.

This essay explores the intersection of irony and affect. Contrary to approaches to irony as an intentional strategy and to the ironist as a detached sovereign subject, the essay foregrounds a kind of irony that issues from a vulnerable subject and from transmissions of affect that exceed the speaker’s intention. This irony unravels through a close reading of the diary that the Greek Alexandrian poet Constantine Cavafy (1863-1933) – a master of irony - kept from his first trip to Athens in 1901. Revising previous approaches to Cavafy’s irony, the essay reads his diary as an ironic text that yields a non-sovereign ironic subject. While the diary consists of dry, factual information and commonplace descriptions, blocking access to the author’s personal experience, its language is haunted by embodied forms of knowledge that draw attention to text’s other: the poet’s body. Irony emerges when the detached mode of writing is disrupted by manifestations of bodily demands and affective forms of knowledge that thwart the writing subject’s desire for control. Proposing the figure of the reluctant ironist, the essay shows how irony springs from repressed physiological forms of knowledge that disrupt a text’s regulatory mechanisms and the speaker’s integrated self.

The paper describes an unrecorded copy of the collection of poems 1905-1915 manufactured by Konstantinos Kavafis for his friends in 1930. The copy, with an autograph dedication by the poet to Emmanuel Konstantinou and some handwritten paratextual amendments, bears the book-plate of the recipient’s wife, Theodora, engraved in 1925 by the Russian artist Ivan Bilibin in Alexandria. Theodora (Dora), born Ralli, moved in the postwar period to a villa near Florence and several hundred books of her valuable library are now kept in the Gabinetto Vieusseux, where they arrived mostly with the Scovil library, donated by a Anglo-Florentine family who had inherited her assets.

Ithaca, the poem, is not just a story about a fantastic voyage and of a hero overcoming some imaginary or not difficulties on his way back home. It is an inner-self quest for rediscovering who you really are; at the same time it is a celebration of the human nature and the capability of achieving your goals, even if it means that you have to go through the most difficult and unexpected obstacles to reach those goals.

It is the journey not the destination that matters most in ones quest for life, says Cavafis with aesthetism and skepticism! Parabolizing from Homer's Odyssey, Cavafis expresses through myth, allusion and symbolism that most important in life is the experience acquired from the journey of life and not necessarily just reaching the ultimate single goal. If one allows self to ignore those encounters that are only negligible fixations imposed by society's status quo; if one challenges the status quo with wisdom and an open mind; facing life without fear, avoiding the frayed and stereotyped; exploring life to the fullest… then this person will be truly rich… this person would have lived and "tasted" life to the fullest!

RESUMEN El objeto de este texto es el análisis de los dos poemas inéditos («Lohengrin» y «La sospecha») de Konstandinos P. Kavafis dedicados a la ópera Lohengrin de Richard Wagner, escritos en 1898. Como en otros poemas de su etapa formativa, por ejemplo, «Segunda Odisea» y «El rey Claudio», Kavafis ofrece en estos textos una versión trasgresora del argumento de la ópera original: en el primer poema, Lohengrin no acude a socorrer a Elsa y, en el segundo, el campeón es derrotado por su enemigo Telramund. Al contrario que Elsa, la figura protagonista de los poemas de Kavafis es, por tanto, culpable del crimen de que se le acusa y no merece la salva-ción que sus sueños le prometían. Estos poemas conectan con textos de la obra posterior de Kavafis en los que se reivindica su condición marginal. ABSTRACT «The call of the herald: Lohengrin and Kavafis». The aim of this paper is to analyse two unedited poems of Konstandinos P. Kavafis («Lohengrin» and «The suspicion») which are dedicated to the opera Lohengrin by Richard Wagner and were written about 1898. Like other poems of his formative years such as «Second Odyssey» and «King Claudius», Kavafis offers in these two poems a transgressive version of the plot of the opera: in the first poem Lohengrin doesn't come to save Elsa and, in the second one, he is defeated by his enemy Telramund. Unlike Elsa, the protagonist of the poems is guilty of the crime of which he is accused and he doesn't deserve the salvation which his dreams promised him. These poems connect with other texts dated in the poet's maturity in which he claims his marginal status.

Premessa Rileggere gli episodi dell'epica omerica attraverso le pagine di un poeta greco moderno come Kavafis non significa solo studiare la fortuna di un grande classico, ma anche ripercorrere idealmente le fasi complesse e stratificate dell'intera cultura ellenica. In questi due poeti, infatti, troviamo rappresentati i due generi letterari più significativi dell'intera letteratura greca 1 : l'epica e la lirica. La prima iniziata con i poemi omerici e presente ancora oggi nei canti tramandati oralmente dell'Erotocrito, la seconda sviluppatasi in età arcaica in molteplici forme (lirica monodica e corale) e dal fascino così profondo ma allo stesso tempo sfuggente a causa della drammatica frammentarietà dei testi giunti sino a noi 2. Ma se Omero è famoso almeno grazie alla prassi scolastica italiana, il secondo, purtroppo, è conosciuto ed apprezzato solo parzialmente 3. Di Kavafis, infatti, il lettore italiano conosce, prevalentemente, le poesie di argomento erotico, componimenti che, se non scandalizzano le orecchie dei grecisti, abituate alla lettura della lirica greca antica e degli epigrammi erotici dell'Antologia Palatina, possono creare un certo imbarazzo nel lettore comune non abituato a questo genere di testi. Questa osservazione non è il tentativo di far finta di ignorare certe tematiche (che hanno senza alcun dubbio una non trascurabile importanza) per ragioni di natura morale o estetica. Piuttosto, si tratta di far notare come anche altri aspetti della poetica di Kavafis dovrebbero essere evidenziati 4. Mi riferisco, in particolare, al rapporto fra Kavafis ed i modelli letterari da lui studiati, conosciuti ed imitati; al legame, così importante, fra le sue liriche e la poesia europea o l'antica poesia greca e, più in generale, alla personale rilettura del patrimonio culturale e letterario greco (da Omero all'età bizantina). In effetti, uno degli elementi più suggestivi della poesia di Kavafis è proprio quella complessa stratificazione di fasi della storia della civiltà ellenica 5 filtrate e meditate dalla mente di un poeta che 1 Per letteratura greca intendo tutta la produzione letteraria in lingua greca (antica, bizantina e moderna). 2 Merita di essere ricordata la citazione del famoso notturno di Alcmane nel film Mediterraneo di Gabriele Salvatores (1991). 3 Si ricordi che la prima edizione italiana delle 154 poesie del corpus di Kavafis risale al 1961: cfr. F. M. Pontani, Costantino Kavafis, Poesie, Milano 1961. La prima edizione greca completa delle poesie, invece, è del 1935 (due anni dopo la morte del poeta): cfr Τά Ποιήματα, a cura di R. Ciò non significa, ovviamente, che le tematiche trattate da Kavafis siano un semplice raffinato gioco letterario, ma che il poeta per dar voce ad alcune sue esperienze ha usato un linguaggio estremamente preciso e codificato secoli prima. 5 Sull'argomento cfr.
