The two studied Calamintha species showed different polyphenolic content and sterol composition. Calamintha grandiflora possessed twice the polyphenolic content of Calamintha nepeta subsp. glandulosa, while the latter contained a higher number of sterols. Among them, stigmast-5-en-3β-ol was found to be the major constituent. The methanolic extract of C. grandiflora was more potent than the C. nepeta subsp. glandulosa methanolic extract in a DPPH assay, while the activity of the C. grandiflora EtOAc fraction was weaker than its C. nepeta subsp. glandulosa counterpart. Fractions of C. nepeta subsp. glandulosa showed higher activity using a β-carotene bleaching test. The petrol ether fraction of C. grandiflora showed significant inhibition of NO production.

The objective of this investigation was to describe the theorical bases toward to an approximation of appiying the “investigationaction-thought in the teaching process during educational practicing (2003-2004) by the Universidad del Zulia’s interns, in ‘Educacion Basica Integral’ Mention developed in Primary Schools integrated to the program ‘Escuelas Zulianas de Avanzada’, specifically in ‘23 de Enero’ and ‘Gabriela Mistral’ located in Maracaibo. The theorical bases studied were Argyris and Schon (1996) with the Theory of Action, Elliot (1998) with Investigationaction, and Tonucci (1999) Investigation in the classroom, among others. The inhial methodology was the documental investigation and then applied as an approximation to then investigation- action ion the school context. The result was a process offormation in the students and teachers in practice supported in educational investigation, with planning, action and thought looking forward to promote change from the school.

Stanley Hauerwas argues that stories are a kind of knowledge, and can function as “analytic tool[s].” In that spirit, I would like to test his postulate, if not expand it in a decidedly Augustinian direction. I, too, am concerned about our ability, as well as our desire or lack thereof, to test our narratives. And how better to test the turn to narrative than with and from within narratives themselves?

The object of the study was to determine the chemical composition of Diospyros lotus L. extract and their antioxidant and antiproliferative properties. Eight compounds were isolated from D. lotus and identified as gallic acid, methylgallate, ellagic acid, kaempferol, quercetin, myricetin, myricetin 3-O-β-glucuronide, and myricetin-3-O-α-rhamnoside. D. lotus extract tested in different in vitro systems (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and Fe2+ chelating activity assay) showed significant antioxidant activity. The potential antiproliferative properties of D. lotus extract and isolated compounds against nine human cancer cell lines such as COR-L23, CaCo-2, C32, ACHN, A375, A549, Huh-7D12, MCF-7, and LNCaP were investigated in vitro by SRB assay. D. lotus extract demonstrated the highest inhibitory activity against COR-L23 with an IC50 value of 12.2 μg/ml. Among identified hydrolysable tannins, ellagic acid evidenced strong antiproliferative activity against both C32 and A375 cells with IC50 values of 0.8 and 4.1 μg/ml, respectively. Interesting results were observed, also, with gallic acid that showed the highest cytotoxic activity against CaCo-2 (IC50 2.6 μg/ml). Overall, the results of this study suggest that D. lotus displays a good antioxidant activity and has antiproliferative effects. Both activities are related to identified phenolic compounds.

Este articulo presenta una metodologia para disenar Perfiles Academico-profesionales por competencias. Su proposito es orientar a equipos de disenadores curriculares en el desarrollo de este elemento rector de los procesos de formacion. La indagacion se oriento cualitativamente; las tecnicas fueron: analisis documental, Delphi, Abaco de Regnier y grupos de discusion. La integracion de los resultados y su analisis a partir de las teorias que sustentan la propuesta se hizo a traves de la triangulacion. La metodologia propuesta se organiza en 6 fases de trabajo que son explicadas en detalle y fueron validadas teoricamente con expertos en curriculo y en su contenido con actores del campo de trabajo y profesores de diversas areas disciplinares y de formacion profesional. La metodologia propuesta representa una opcion para los planificadores curriculares en el diseno y evaluacion de perfiles academico-profesionales bajo una nueva orientacion metodologica basada en el modelo de competencias.

This study was carried out to determine the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil, seed oil, and methanolic extract of seed oil obtained from Laurus nobilis L. (Lauraceae). The methanolic extract of seed oil exhibited more effective antibacterial activity comparing to essential oil and seed oil, GC-MS analyses of the essential oil resulted in the identification of 25 compounds. 1.8-Cineol (44.72%), a-Terpinyl acetate (12.95%), Sabinene (12.82%) were the main components. The fatty acid composition was characterized with the high content of linoleic acid (40.79%) and lauric acid (38.08%). The 50% (IC50) inhibition activity of the essential oil on the free radical DPPH was determined as 94.655 mg ml(-1), whereas IC50 value of methanolic extract of seed oil was found unstable.
