Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites, chlordanerelated compounds (CHLs), mirex, hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), dieldrin, and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were determined in blubber of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina concolor) from the northwestern Atlantic coast. PCBs, DDTs, and CHLs were the major persistent organochlorines in harbor seal blubber, while mirex, HCHs, dieldrin, and HCB were minor contaminants. Highest concentrations were found in the adult males, followed by the pups, yearlings, adult females, and fetuses. DDT and PCB concentrations have declined from the high levels reported in the early 1970s, but no declines were observed in our samples over the ten-year period 1991-2001. DDT/PCB ratios were indicative of a more rapid decline of DDTs than PCBs, while ratios of p,p 0 -DDE/DDT were indicative of a metabolic ''weathering'' of DDT. The population appears to be susceptible to disease outbreaks, as evidenced by a recurrence of viral epizootics since the late 1970s. The PCB burdens in these seals are similar to levels reported in seals from polluted regions of Europe and Asia, and exceed the estimated threshold levels for adverse reproductive and immune system effects in the species.

A large-scale groundwater contamination characterises the Pleistocene groundwater system of the former industrial and abandoned mining region Bitterfeld/Wolfen, Eastern Germany. For more than a century, local chemical production and extensive lignite mining caused a complex contaminant release from local production areas and related dump sites. Today, organic pollutants (mainly organochlorines) are present in all compartments of the environment at high concentration levels. An integrated methodology for characterising the current situation of pollution as well as the future fate development of hazardous substances is highly required to decide on further management and remediation

Fifty-five surface sediment samples covering virtually the entire Bohai Sea (Bohai) were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), in order to provide the extensive information of recent occurrence levels, distribution, possible sources and potential biological risk of these compounds in this area. Concentrations of total dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) in Bohai ranged widely from 0.24 to 5.67 ng g À1 (mean 1.36 ± 0.93 ng g À1 ) and 0.16 to 3.17 ng g À1 (mean 0.83 ± 0.57 ng g À1 ), respectively. High concentrations of DDTs were observed in the coastal areas especially at the isolated sites neighboring the harbor or port regions. The recent DDT inputs could be mainly attributed to the agricultural activity (e.g. dicofol), wastewater of chemical plants and the usage of antifouling paint. The distribution pattern of HCHs was different from that of DDTs due to their different physical-chemical properties and amounts of production and usage in the past. (DDE + DDD)/DDT ratios indicated that the degradation of the parent DDT occurred significantly. The contributions of previous and current inputs of pesticides in the coastal areas were distinguished by means of principal component analysis, suggesting that the recent usage of DDT and technical chlordane could serve as important fresh input sources for OCPs. DDTs and chlordanes are the two-main species of OCPs with more ecotoxicological concern in Bohai.

Over the last 60 years, the use of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) as a pesticide has resulted in the production of 44 million tons of HCH waste, which has been dumped in open sinks across the globe. Here, the combination of the genomes of two genetic subspecies (Sphingobium japonicum UT26 and Sphingobium indicum B90A; isolated from two discrete geographical locations, Japan and India, respectively) capable of degrading HCH, with metagenomic data from an HCH dumpsite (B450 mg HCH per g soil), enabled the reconstruction and validation of the last-common ancestor (LCA) genotype. Mapping the LCA genotype (3128 genes) to the subspecies genomes demonstrated that 420% of the genes in each subspecies were absent in the LCA. This includes two enzymes from the 'upper' HCH degradation pathway, suggesting that the ancestor was unable to degrade HCH isomers, but descendants acquired lin genes by transposon-mediated lateral gene transfer. In addition, anthranilate and homogentisate degradation traits were found to be strain (selectively retained only by UT26) and environment (absent in the LCA and subspecies, but prevalent in the metagenome) specific, respectively. One draft secondary chromosome, two near complete plasmids and eight complete lin transposons were assembled from the metagenomic DNA. Collectively, these results reinforce the elastic nature of the genus Sphingobium, and describe the evolutionary acquisition mechanism of a xenobiotic degradation phenotype in response to environmental pollution. This also demonstrates for the first time the use of metagenomic data in ancestral genotype reconstruction, highlighting its potential to provide significant insight into the development of such phenotypes.

The present study reports the concentration levels and distribution patterns of the organochlorine pesticide residues in the surface sediments of river Yamuna in the Indian capital state, Delhi. Analytical measurements were carried out for twenty organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the Pre-monsoon, Monsoon and Post-monsoon seasons, at six different sampling locations along the 22 km stretch of the river Yamuna in Delhi. The results revealed contamination of the surface sediments with several persistent organochlorine pesticides. Endrin aldehyde, Endosulfan sulfate and DDT showed the highest percentage composition of OCP at all the sampling sites in all the three seasons. The total organochlorine pesticides level ranged from 157.71 -307.66 ng/g in ng/g in the Post-monsoon season. This not only demonstrates the pollution of the river with pesticide residues, but also the necessity of a continuous long-term monitoring of the affected environment.

Fourteen surface water and nine surface sediment samples were collected from the Peacock River and analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) by gas chromatograph-electron capture detector (GC-ECD). All the analyzed organochlorine pesticides, except o,p'-DDT, were detected in sediments from the Peacock River; but in the water samples, only β-HCH, HCB, p,p'-DDD, and p,p'-DDT were detected at some sites. The ranges for total OCPs in the water and sediments were from N.D. to 195 ng l( - 1) and from 1.36 to 24.60 ng g( - 1), respectively. The only existing HCH isomer in the water, β-HCH, suggested that the contamination by HCHs could be attributed to erosion of the weathered agricultural soils containing HCHs compounds. Composition analyses showed that no technical HCH, technical DDT, technical chlordanes, endosulfans, and HCB had been recently used in this region. However, there was new input of γ-HCH (lindane) into the Peacock River. The most probable source was water flowing from Bosten Lake and/or agricultural tailing water that was returned directly into the Peacock River. DDT compounds in the sediments may be derived mainly from DDT-treated aged and weathered agricultural soils, the degradation condition was aerobic and the main product was DDE. HCB in the sediment might be due to the input from Bosten Lake and the lake may act as an atmospheric deposition zone. There was no significant correlation between the concentrations of OCPs (including ∑HCH, ∑DDT, chlordanes, endosulfans, HCB and total OCPs) and the content of fine particles (<63 μm). Assessment of human exposure to environmental persistent organic pollutants such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) based on the levels in human breast milk provides a reasonable tool not only to assess the contaminant burden in mothers but also to assess potential exposure of breast-fed neonates. There are limited data on levels of PCBs and OCPs in humans but no previous reports from Turkey on chemically determined levels PAHs in human milk. The aim of this study was to report the levels and accumulation profiles of OCPs, PCBs and PAHs in 47 breast milk samples obtained from a Mediterranean city, Mersin. High resolution analyses were performed by a gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometer (GC–MS). Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (4.4′-DDE) was the dominant pollutant. Beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (ß-HCH), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (4.4′-DDT), dieldrin, hexachlorobenzene, oxy-chlordane, cis-heptachlorepoxide were the other main OCPs detected. Mean levels of ΣPCB congeners and WHOPCB-TEQ were 9.94 and 0.001 ng/g lipid, respectively. PCB 153 showed the highest concentration (3.37 ng/g lipid), followed by PCB 138 and 180. For the dioxin-like PCBs, PCB 118 was the dominant (0.97 ng/g lipid). Naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene and fluoranthene were the major PAHs among the 16 PAHs detected. The estimated daily intakes of DDTs, PCBs, HCHs and HCB were not exceeded the tolerable daily intake (TDI) proposed by the Health Canada Guideline. These results indicate that the neonates of Mersin city are exposed to persistent organic pollutants analyzed in this study. However, neonates born in Mersin province are less exposed than the ones born in other regions, considering OCP and PCB levels in breast milk.► We analyzed the levels of OCPs, PCBs and PAHs in breast milk from Mersin City. ► This is the first study in Turkey determining the levels of PAHs in human milk. ► Low levels of PAHs, OCPs and PCBs were detected in human milk samples. ► Our findings were discussed with similar studies from Mediterranean region.

A Gram-negative, orange-pigmented, rod-shaped, motile and aerobic bacterial strain designated DM9 T was isolated from hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH)-contaminated soil (Lucknow, India) and its taxonomic position was determined using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate belonged to the phylum Bacteroidetes and confirmed its placement in the genus Pontibacter, with sequence similarity ranging from 93.92 to 96.21 % with other members of the genus Pontibacter. The major cellular fatty acids of the novel strain were iso-C 17 : 0 3-OH (6.00 %), iso-C 15 : 0 (21.54 %) and summed feature 4 (comprising C 17 : 1 iso I/ anteiso B; 32.3 %). The polar lipid profile of strain DM9 T showed the presence of phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminophospholipid, two unknown aminolipids and four unknown polar lipids. Strain DM9 T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and its DNA G+C content was 49.2 mol%. sym-Homospermidine was the major polyamine observed in the cell. The results obtained on the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis, biochemical and physiological tests clearly distinguished DM9 T from closely related members of the genus Pontibacter. It is proposed that DM9 T represents a novel species, Pontibacter lucknowensis sp. nov.; the type strain is DM9 T (5CCM 7955 T 5MTCC 11079 T ).

Six cases of facial erythema with follicular plugging are described. These cases correspond with characteristics of the disorder pityriasis folliculorum, a presumed demodicidosis. The authors report 10 cases of localised sarcoptic mange in dogs. In each case, lesions were localised to one precise area of the skin. Pruritus was present in nine cases and absent in one. Affected areas were the feet (one case), the face and/or the pinnae (six cases), the abdominal skin (one case), the flank (one case) and the lumbar area (one case). The types of lesions were erythema, papules, lichenification, scales, crusts and alopecia. Parasites were found in all cases except one, in which anti-immunoglobulin G Sarcoptes serology was positive. The acaricidal treatments given were lindane, ivermectin or selamectin and were all successful.

Breast milk is considered the most important route in the elimination of deposited organochlorine pesticides in a mother’s body. The equilibrium of organochlorine pesticides in the human body considers the elements of internal transport processes, the equilibrium pattern between pesticides and tissue fat contents, and the mobilization of lipids and lipoproteins among body parts. The aim of this study was to determine organochlorine pesticide levels in breast milk samples from the 4th to the 30th day of lactation and the trend in their concentration time so as to forecast the time tendency of residue levels and the pesticide excretion pattern. Milk samples were taken from forty participants and analyzed by GLC-ECD. The organochlorine pesticide residues determined in the breast milk samples during lactation decreased: β-HCH from 0.095 to 0.066 mg/kg, pp′DDE from 1.807 to 1.423 mg/kg and pp′DDT from 0.528 to 0.405 mg/kg, at the characteristic rate for each compound. The obtained results compared with the calculated fits of forecasts were parallel and did not exhibit significant differences. The newborn baby exposed during lactation had organochlorine pesticide residues whose levels decreased permanently. The levels depended not only on the breast milk nutrition, but also on the total environmental exposures which included air pollution as a significant contamination source.

Forty-six samples each of vegetarian and nonvegetarian total diet consumed from March 1999 to December 2002 by male subjects in the age group of 19-24 years were analyzed to assess their risk through dietary intake with respect to pesticide residues. The results revealed low dietary intake of levels of S-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and which were almost comparable to levels reported in developed countries. The results are indicative of contamination of total diet with pesticide residues despite a ban on the use of DDT and restricted use of lindane in agriculture only. Predominance of lindane residues indicates that liquid milk was a main contributory source as it comprises almost 21% to the total diet consumed per day. Concerted efforts by regulatory authorities and emphasis on judicious use of agrochemicals in pest control are required to decrease the burden of these chemicals in food stuffs to levels safe for dietary intake. r 2005 Elsevier Inc. gamma-Hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH, also called gamma-BHC and lindane) is a halogenated organic insecticide that causes serious environmental problems. The aerobic degradation pathway of gamma-HCH was extensively revealed in bacterial strain Sphingobium japonicum (formerly Sphingomonas paucimobilis) UT26. gamma-HCH is transformed to 2,5-dichlorohydroquinone through sequential reactions catalyzed by LinA, LinB, and LinC, and then 2,5-dichlorohydroquinone is further metabolized by LinD, LinE, LinF, LinGH, and LinJ to succinyl-CoA and acetyl-CoA, which are metabolized in the citrate/tricarboxylic acid cycle. In addition to these catalytic enzymes, a putative ABC-type transporter system encoded by linKLMN is also essential for the gamma-HCH utilization in UT26. The aim of the present work was to investigate genotoxicant accumulation and biological responses of zebra mussels and blue mussels collected along a pollution gradient in the Seine estuary and in the Seine Bay. The sampling area included three contaminated and one reference sites for each species. The study focused on polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), lindane, polychlorobiphenyls (PCB) and metals known to be potential genotoxicants and/or reactive oxygen species (ROS) inducers. Enzymatic activities related to cellular defence systems including the phase II enzyme glutathione S-transferase (GST) and three antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathion peroxydase (GPx) were measured in gills. DNA adducts and DNA strand breaks (Comet assay) were measured in digestive gland and hemocytes, respectively. Species differences were observed in metal accumulation (As and Pb), GPx activity and DNA adduct formation. A marked upstream-downstream gradient was reported for PAH body burden and to a lesser extent for PCB and metals with the highest values measured just downstream the industrialized area of Rouen. GST and SOD activities in gills of bivalves were positively related to PAH and metals body burden, respectively. Activation of those cellular defences may prevent accumulation of electrophilic metabolites and free radicals and thus may protect DNA and others macromolecules against oxidation and adduction. Although DNA strand breaks and bulky adducts were detected in both species, levels were relatively low and no significant site differences were observed in June 2003. Our results indicate a clear relationship between genotoxicant accumulation and positive activation of detoxification and antioxidant systems but poor consequences in term of DNA damage for wild population of mussels inhabiting the Seine estuary.

Resistance of Sarcoptes scabiei to various topical therapies has been described, but clinical assessment of treatment failure is problematic and in-vitro assays are generally not available. We describe a simple in-vitro analysis used to evaluate the relative efficacy of a range of topical, oral, and herbal treatments available in Australia for the treatment of scabies. S. scabiei var. hominis mites were collected from skin scrapings obtained from 7 crusted scabies patients over a period of 2 years (1997 and 1998). Larvae, nymphal instars, and adult mites were tested within 3 h of collection and continuously exposed to selected commercially available treatment products until death, with the elapsed time recorded. Neem was the only product to show little acaricidal activity. Survival curves indicated that, of the other agents, 5% permethrin (Lyclear) had the slowest killing time, with 35% of mites still alive after 3 h, and 4% still alive after 18-22 h of constant exposure. The concentrations and composition of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were determined in alluvial soils subjected to heavy flooding in a rural region of Poland. Soil samples (n=30) were collected from the upper soil layer from a 70-km 2 area. Chemical determinations included basic physicochemical properties and the contents of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, 16 compounds). The median concentrations of Σ7PCB (PCB28+PCB52+PCB101+PCB118+ PCB138+PCB153+PCB180), Σ3HCH (α-HCH+β-HCH+γ-HCH) and Σ3pp′(DDT+DDE+DDD) were 1.60±1.03, 0.22±0.13 and 25.18±82.70 μg kg −1 , respectively. The median concentrations of the most abundant PAHs, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo [b] fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene were 50±37, 38±27, 29±30, 45±36 and 24±22 μg kg −1 , respectively. Compared with elsewhere in the world, the overall level of contamination with POPs was low and similar to the levels in agricultural soils from neighbouring countries, except for benzo[a]pyrene and DDT. There was no evidence that flooding affected the levels of POPs in the studied soils. The patterns observed for PAHs and PCBs indicate that atmospheric deposition is the most important long-term source of these contaminants. DDTs were the dominant organochlorine pesticides (up to 99 %), and the contribution of the parent pp′ isomer was up to 50 % of the ΣDDT, which indicates the advantage of aged contamination. A high pp′DDE/pp′DDD ratio suggests the prevalence of aerobic transformations of parent DDT. Dominance of the γ isomer in the HCHs implies historical use of lindane in the area. The effect of soil properties on the POP concentrations was rather weak, although statistically significant links with the content of the <0.02-mm fraction, C total or N total were observed for some individual compounds in the PCB group.

In the present work we have evaluated the levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in 61 commercially available brands of cheese (54 conventional and 7 organic) to estimate their relevance as a source of organochlorines. Our results showed that hexachlorobenzene, a-HCH, dieldrin, p,p 0 -DDE, and PCBs 153 and 180 were present in most of the samples independent of the cheese type. The concentration of OCPs was low for both types of cheese, although organic had lower concentrations than conventional. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of OCPs was lower than the tolerable daily intake (TDI).

This study investigated the toxic effects of the insecticides lindane and chlorpyrifos, the herbicide diuron, the organometallic antifoulant tributyltin (TBT), and the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the early life stages of Paracentrotus lividus (Echinodermata, Euechinoidea), Ciona intestinalis (Chordata, Ascidiacea), Maja squinado and Palaemon serratus (Arthropoda, Crustacea) in laboratory acute toxicity tests. The assays studied embryogenesis success from fertilized egg to normal larvae in P. lividus (48 h incubation at 20 °C) and C. intestinalis (24 h incubation at 20 °C), and larval mortality at 24 and 48 h in M. squinado and P. serratus. For P. lividus, the median effective concentrations (EC50) reducing percentages of normal larvae by 50% were: 350 μg l−1 for chlorpyrifos, 5500 μg l−1 for diuron, 4277 μg l−1 for SDS, and 0.309 μg l−1 for TBT. For C. intestinalis, the EC50 values affecting embryogenesis success were 5666 μg l−1 for chlorpyrifos, 24,397 μg l−1 for diuron, 4412 μg l−1 for lindane, 5145 μg l−1 for SDS, and 7.1 μg l−1 for TBT. The median lethal concentrations (LC50) for M. squinado larval survival were 0.84 μg l−1 (24 h) and 0.79 μg l−1 (48 h) for chlorpyrifos, 2.23 μg l−1 (24 h) and 2.18 μg l−1 (48 h) for lindane, and 687 μg l−1 (48 h) for SDS. For P. serratus the LC50 values obtained were 0.35 μg l−1 (24 h) and 0.22 μg l−1 (48 h) for chlorpyrifos, 3011 μg l−1 (24 h) and 3044 μg l−1 (48 h) for diuron, 5.20 μg l−1 (24 h) and 5.59 μg l−1 (48 h) for lindane, and 22.30 μg l−1 (24 h) and 17.52 μg l−1 (48 h) for TBT. Decapod larvae, as expected, were markedly more sensitive to the insecticides than sea urchins and ascidians, and SDS was the least toxic compound tested for these organisms. Lowest observed effect concentrations (LOEC) of TBT for sea urchin and ascidian embryos, chlorpyrifos and lindane for crustacean larvae, and SDS, were similar to those found in many coastal areas indicating that there would be a risk to invertebrate embryos and larvae from exposure in the field to these pollutants.

This paper documents the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) deposition inferred from a sedimentary record exposed in a salt-marsh trench in South-Central Chile. Sediments were carefully collected every 1 cm from the trench wall. The samples were analyzed for PCBs, HCHs, 137 Cs, organic carbon and grain size. The 137 Cs fallout and the sedimentary signature left by the 1960 Chilean tsunami were used as temporal markers to estimate the stratigraphic chronology and the sedimentation rates. PCBs were quantified by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD), and positive samples were confirmed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry detection (GC-MS). Based on these results, PCBs and HCHs deposition over the last 40 years was estimated. No PCBs were detected below the tsunami signature. Total concentrations ranged from undetectable (ND) to 32 ng/g d.w. for PCBs and from undetectable (ND) to 1.29 ng/g d.w. for HCHs. The highest PCB concentrations were found in the upper 7 cm of the core. Even though PCBs were banned in 1982 as electrical fluids in Chile, total estimated PCB fluxes have increased approximately 20 times during the last 40 years: from undetectable values to 102.6 ng/cm 2 /year, reflecting that PCBs are still in use and being released into the environment.

Near-ground air (26 substances) and surface seawater (55 substances) concentrations of persistent toxic substances (PTS) were determined in July 2012 in a coordinated and coherent way around the Aegean Sea based on passive air (10 sites in 5 areas) and water (4 sites in 2 areas) sampling. The direction of air-sea exchange was determined for 18 PTS. Identical samplers were deployed at all sites and were analysed at one laboratory. hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) as well as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its degradation products are evenly distributed in the air of the whole region. Glucuronidation is an important detoxification pathway for organic pollutants in fish. We report here the isolation and characterisation of UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGT) genes from the closely related marine flatfish, plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and flounder (Platichthys flesus). The deduced amino acid sequences share greater similarity with mammalian UGT1 family genes than UGT2 genes (44-47% and 39-40% amino acid identity respectively) and have been designated UGT1B. Both plaice and flounder UGT1B mRNAs are most highly expressed in liver, but are also expressed in intestine, gill, kidney and adipose tissue to a greater extent than muscle, heart or brain. Plaice UGT1B mRNA was undetectable in gametes or fertilised eggs and there was a large increase in expression between gastrulation and myotome formation after which levels declined some 5-10 fold. Flounder UGT1B mRNA was increased in liver after intraperitoneal injection of Arochlor 1254 or lindane, but not after perflourooctanoic acid or 3-methylcholanthrene. In isolated flounder hepatocytes UGT1B mRNA was increased by benzo(a)pyrene but not by ethynylestradiol. Expression of a cDNA for plaice UGT1B in cos7 cells resulted in higher 1-naphthol conjugation in cell homogenates compared to steroid conjugation, whilst bilirubin and bile acid conjugation undetectable. This indicates that the plaice gene codes for the phenol-conjugating UGT previously purified in our laboratory from this species and that it is likely to play a major role in the detoxification of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in flatfish. Its role in development is unknown. UGT1B genes are also present in pufferfish (Tetraodon nigroviridis) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) genomes, but that they differ in their genic organisation. Pufferfish possess multiple (repeated) complete UGT1 genes and Southern blots indicate that the homologous plaice UGT1B gene may also be organised in this way. In contrast, zebrafish appear to have two UGT1 loci whose sequences and intron/exon structures are closely related to that of plaice, however, the organisation of these genes is similar to the mammalian UGT1 family since each has multiple repeated exon 1's which are alternatively spliced to a common set of exons encoding the aglycone binding domain. Taken together with evidence from phylogenetic comparison of fish sequences with UGT1 and UGT2 families in mammals, we suggest these homologous fish UGTs should all be included within the vertebrate UGT1 family and designated as UGT1B.

Deposition, turnover and movement of persistent organic pollutants (POP) were investigated in the EU integrated project "AquaTerra", which is among the first funded environmental projects within the 6th Framework Program by the European Commission. Project work integrates across various disciplines that range from biogeochemistry, environmental engineering, computer modelling and chemistry to socio-economic sciences. Field study areas are the river basins of the Ebro, the Meuse, the Elbe and the Danube as well as the 3-km 2 French catchment of the Brévilles Spring. Within the first 2 years of the project more than 1700 samples of atmospherically deposited particles, sediments, and water have been collected in the above-mentioned systems. Results show clear spatial patterns of deposition of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with the highest rates in the Meuse Basin. For local inputs, in the Brévilles sandy aquifer, the contamination of the groundwater by the pesticides atrazine (AT) and deethylatrazine did not decrease even 5 years after their agricultural inputs were stopped. On the other hand, herbicides such as mecroprop (MCPP), and PAHs, were at least partially degraded microbiologically in laboratory studies with soils and aquifer material from selected sites. For sediment transport of contaminants, new flood sampling techniques revealed highest deposition rates of β-hexachlorocyclohexane (β−HCH) in river sediments at hotspot areas on the Mulde River in the Bitterfeld region (Elbe Basin, Germany). These selected preliminary results of AquaTerra help to improve fundamental understanding of persistent organic pollutants (POP) in the environment.

Changes in rat liver oxidative stress-related parameters, morphological alterations, as well as circulating and tissue levels of lindane were studied 1-7 days after the administration of a single dose of 60 mg of lindane/kg. One day after lindane treatment, a significant enhancement in the oxidative stress status of the liver was observed, characterized by an increase in thiobarbituric acid reactants production and in the microsomal generation of superoxide radical (O.-2) coupled to cytochrome P450 induction, and a decrement in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. Consequently, the O.-2 production/SOD activity ratio was enhanced two-fold. In this condition, light microscopy studies revealed the incidence of liver lesions in periportal areas, together with significant changes at the mitochondrial level observed by electron microscopy, which coincide with the maximal levels of lindane in the liver, adipose tissue, plasma and whole blood. The present work tested the estrogenic activity of three weak environmental estrogens p,p DDT [1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(pchlorophenyl) ethane], p,p DDE [1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene] and ␤BHC [␤-benzene-hexachloride] in the transgenic estrogen-reporter mouse model (ERE-tK-LUC). By a time dependent analysis of the transgenic reporter expression (luciferase), we showed that all these chemicals modulated the estrogen receptors (ERs) in the whole body, although with a different efficacy and depending upon the tissue analyzed. Peak activity was registered at 16 h of treatment with 5000 g/kg of each compound.

Forty-nine superficial sediment samples used in this study were collected from eight sites in the Bahia Blanca Estuary, located in the Buenos Aires Province southwest, Argentina, in a period between April 2005 and March 2009, to assess the concentration levels, spatial and seasonal distribution, and putative input sources of 18 selected organochlorine pesticides (OCs), following UNEP-IAEA procedures. Average concentration levels in sediments ranged between 3.54 and 63.79 ng g −1 , d.w. (mean = 15.99 ng g −1 , d.w.), for OCs, and from nondetectable to 8.03 ng g −1 , d.w. (mean = 2.16 ng g −1 , d.w.), and from nondetectable to 3.20 ng g −1 (mean = 0.97 ng g −1 , d.w.) for hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), respectively. Principal component analysis allowed the classification of sampling sites according to the main OCs inputs over the estuary. In comparison to other worldwide locations and to the world coastal sediment concentrations range, sediment DDTs and HCHs levels were in the low range; on the opposite, OCs average was in the medium range. OCs seasonal distribution was found to be highly correlated with the precipitations seasonality and sowing seasons in the adjacent agriculture fields. In addition, an ecotoxicological risk assessment pointed industrial and agriculture catchment zones with intermediate probability of adverse effects to biota, while the city sewage outfall was classified with none indication of an immediate threat. Data indicated that the estuary sediments were functioning as a sink for persistent OC pesticides (either in use or banned), however, it was found a declining trend on their environmental burden.

The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of organochlorine pesticides (α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, HCB, dieldrin, o,p′–DDE, p,p′–DDE, p,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) congeners (28, 52, 101, 138, 153, 180) in pasteurized and sterilized milk containing 1.5%, 2.5%, and 3% fat from Tehran province (Iran). Considering the importance of milk and dairy products for human nutrition and the toxicity of these compounds, their daily intake (DI) through milk was also determined. The compounds γ-HCH (13.49 ng g − 1 fat), β-HCH (11.7 ng g − 1 fat), and PCB180 (7.56 ng g − 1 fat) were found at highest concentrations. The DI for all compounds was less than the acceptable daily intake established by FAO/WHO except for Σ PCBs which was more than the minimal risk level.

Objective The present study aims to specify the significance of fetal maxillary length by establishing a nomogram for a Turkish population and by investigating its relationship with the ultrasonographic and biochemical parameters which are commonly used to screen trisomy 21 in the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods The present observational study investigates 1,308 Turkish women who had 11- to 14-week-old singleton healthy pregnancies. Fetal crown-rump length (CRL), nuchal translucency (NT), nasal bone length (NBL) and maxillary length are measured by ultrasonography and maternal serum concentrations of pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and free beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) are determined. Results A positive and significant correlation was detected between the fetal maxillary length and gestational age (r = 0.309, P < 0.001) as was the case with fetal CRL (r = 0.357, P < 0.001) and NBL (r = 0.487, P < 0.001). Although there was a significant and positive correlation between fetal maxillary length and maternal serum PAPP-A levels (r = 0.201, P < 0.001), a significant and negative correlation was found between fetal maxillary length and the maternal serum concentrations of free beta-HCG (r = −0.238, P < 0.001). Fetal maxillary length increased in accordance with the advancing gestational age and increasing CRL. Maternal serum PAPP-A concentrations and fetal CRL and NBL were addressed as independent predictors of fetal maxillary length. Conclusions The length of fetal maxillary bone is a promising biometrical parameter which can be reliably and efficiently used to screen trisomy 21 in first trimester. Fetal maxillary length is also found to correlate with gestational age, CRL, NBL and PAPP-A significantly. It would be rational to use a combination of nasal and maxillary bone length measurements in case serum concentrations of PAPP-A or beta-HCG cannot be assessed.

Fourteen surface water and nine surface sediment samples were collected from the Peacock River and analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) by gas chromatograph–electron capture detector (GC-ECD). All the analyzed organochlorine pesticides, except o,p ′-DDT, were detected in sediments from the Peacock River; but in the water samples, only β-HCH, HCB, p,p ′-DDD, and p,p ′-DDT were detected at some sites. The ranges for total OCPs in the water and sediments were from N.D. to 195 ng l − 1 and from 1.36 to 24.60 ng g − 1, respectively. The only existing HCH isomer in the water, β-HCH, suggested that the contamination by HCHs could be attributed to erosion of the weathered agricultural soils containing HCHs compounds. Composition analyses showed that no technical HCH, technical DDT, technical chlordanes, endosulfans, and HCB had been recently used in this region. However, there was new input of γ-HCH (lindane) into the Peacock River. The most probable source was water flowing from Bosten Lake and/or agricultural tailing water that was returned directly into the Peacock River. DDT compounds in the sediments may be derived mainly from DDT-treated aged and weathered agricultural soils, the degradation condition was aerobic and the main product was DDE. HCB in the sediment might be due to the input from Bosten Lake and the lake may act as an atmospheric deposition zone. There was no significant correlation between the concentrations of OCPs (including ∑HCH, ∑DDT, chlordanes, endosulfans, HCB and total OCPs) and the content of fine particles (<63 μm). The concentrations of OCPs were affected by salinity.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethylene (pp′DDE) are persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic environmental pollutants with potential neurotoxic effects. Despite a growing body of studies investigating the health effects associated with these compounds, their specific effects on early neuropsychological development remain unclear. We investigated such neuropsychological effects in a population-based birth cohort based in three regions in Spain (Sabadell, Gipuzkoa, and Valencia) derived from the INMA [Environment and Childhood] Project. The main analyses in this report were based on 1391 motherchild pairs with complete information on maternal levels of organochlorine compounds and child neuropsychological assessment (Bayley Scales of Infant Development) at age 14 months. We found that prenatal PCB exposure, particularly to congeners 138 and 153, resulted in impairment of psychomotor development (coefficient = −1.24, 95% confidence interval= −2.41, −0.07), but found no evidence for effects on cognitive development. Prenatal exposure to pp′DDE or HCB was not associated with early neuropsychological development. The negative effects of exposure to PCBs on early psychomotor development suggest that the potential neurotoxic effects of these compounds may be evident even at low doses.
