Palo Mayombe

This essay examines the ethical questions that arise with collections and public displays of African and African Diasporic sacred arts in art museums and ethnographic museums. Highlighting several case studies, I consider the successes and challenges of exhibitions featuring Haitian and Congolese sacred vessels (pakèt kongo and minkisi). While certain artifacts have long histories of public display and museum ownership, others are just beginning to receive scholarly attention for their key roles as ceremonial arts or everyday ritual arts. I problematize the concept of religious “secrets,” underscoring the Western fixation on obtaining access to and exploiting indigenous knowledge, which has been especially evident in the colonial and neo-colonial Africana art market. Even in recognizing the educational value of museum exhibitions, ultimately, we must learn to implement an ethics of sacred arts when handling ritual implements of the gods, which host and embody the spirits themselves.

El Centre d’études et de Recherche Musicales CERMUS invita a la comunidad académica a presentar trabajos originales para consideración de su publicación en la obra colectiva titulada “África en la música cubana: perspectivas y desafíos en el siglo XXI”. La iniciativa de esta publicación está motivada por los debates suscitados en el congreso de Latin American Studies Association (LASA - África) celebrado en Ghana, 2023, en los que se evidenció la necesidad de revisitar, sistematizar y actualizar el alcance de aquellos enfoques que dieron sustento a las investigaciones musicológicas, etnológicas y de otras ramas de las ciencias sociales, que hoy constituyen referentes en el campo de los estudios de las herencias africanas en la música cubana. Las complejidades inherentes al nuevo siglo plantean retos significativos al ámbito académico, que debe reconsiderar la influencia de la tecnología en la percepción y difusión de la africanía, la transformación de objetos culturales en el marco de las nuevas corrientes migratorias y la aplicación de enfoques pedagógicos que cuestionan las narrativas coloniales. Esto resulta en la atenuación progresiva de las fronteras tradicionales en la expresión cultural, facilitando la emergencia de nuevas formas de manifestación y percepción de lo africano.

Книга «Невидимые всадники. Культы одержимости глазами ученых» посвящена истории исследований культов одержимости, преимущественно у народов Африки и африканской диаспоры Нового Света. Как ученые трактовали обряды одержимости в разное время? В чем связь вуду и движения Black Lives Matter? Что стоит за браками с демонами и как забеременеть духом преждевременно скончавшегося ребенка, чтобы превратить его во взрослого воина? Почему колониальная этнография считала магию проявлением дикости и отсталости, а современные антропологи заявляют, что духов и божества нельзя свести к одному лишь человеческому воображению? Зачем кубинские колдуны похищают кости из могил и употребляют невыносимо острую перцовую настойку? Какими бывают состояния транса и способы в них погрузиться? В книге рассказывается обо всем этом и о многом другом: о тех ученых, которые сами поверили в духов и практиковали ритуальную одержимость, о «странных антропологах», предвосхитивших в своих «еретических» идеях современные деколониальные исследования, об удивительных психофизиологических способностях и интимных тайнах одержимых. Наблюдения за религиозными практиками различных народов привели интеллектуалов к самым неожиданным выводам. Автор осветил их в этой книге, добавив зарисовки из собственных полевых исследований, а также личные впечатления и знания, почерпнутые от информантов.

The article is devoted to the ritual practice “cambio de vida” which exists in the
Afro-­Caribbean religious and magical traditions, in particular, in Santeria, Ifa and
Palo Monte. The author shows the structure and logic of the rite which have not
been detailed in the scientific literature. Particular attention is paid to the imple‑
mentation of this practice in the context of the modern urban and medical infra‑
structure including inpatient care. Witchcraft has become a part of socio-­cultural
bricolage in Cuba. In the individual patient histories, it often complements a mix‑
ture of biomedical therapies and non-conventional healing practices. It is shown
that witchcraft substitute sacrifice may contribute to the tensions and mistrust. Con‑
versations with informants suggest that the ritual practice of “cambio de vida” gen‑
erates and intensifies the logic of distrust, and the narratives that are formed around
it correspond to social tension and competitive concerns of the population. The
moral dubiousness and ambivalence of the described magical practice is noted. The
article is based on the author’s field research in 2013 and 2019. Using the scientific
literature related to the issues raised the author aims for a complete description of
the cambio de vida current existence in Cuba.

Un Américain (Samuels), trois Nuyoricans (Figueroa, Barretto et Palmieri), un Portoricain (Gomez) et trois Cubains (Sosa, Berroa et Prieto). Seulement un échantillon, représentatif de ce merveilleux genre musical avec des racines africaines, européennes et américaines, qui se sont distillées dans la Caraïbe, comme le rhum, et étend ses branches aujourd’hui partout dans le monde. Comme on l’a vu dans les programmes antérieurs et comme on continuera de le voir dans ceux qui suivent.

L’occasion de ce programme diversifié est le moment d’orienter notre regard vers les principes qui ont guidé l’une des investigations sur le latin jazz que nous considérons comme la plus aboutie, c’est le texte Latin jazz : the first of the fusions, 1880 to today, par John Storm Roberts, publiée en 1999.

Medicolegal professionals occasionally encounter human remains that have been used for ritual purposes. In the state of Florida, practitioners of the Afro-Cuban religious system of Palo (a Kongo-inspired religion frequently referred to as Palo Mayombe) use human skulls and crania in religious rituals [1–3]. Recent research by forensic anthropologists from the University of Flor ida’s C.A. Pound Human Identif ication Laboratory (CAPHIL) has identif ied biocultural and taphonomic signatures left by Palo practices on human remains [3]. Some of the traits included in the biocultural and taphonomic signatures are shared by other Afro-Cuban religious systems–most notably, Ocha (often called Santería), Palo’s Yoruba-inspired cousin religion [3–6]. However, other traits constitute unique elements of Palo ritual [4, 5], enabling anthropologists to identify the religious affiliation of these assemblages with confidence [3].

Con la introducción de la esclavitud africana a Cuba por parte de los colonizadores españoles, en el siglo XVI, se observa que tanto la cultura, las creencias y la religión se ponen en tensión dentro de un escenario de poder donde los fenómenos sociales se encuentran, colisionan y se mezclan. A fin de ejemplo, en el presente trabajo abordaremos el proceso de sincretización que pone de manifiesto cómo perviven y se reestructuran los sistemas religiosos que permiten asociar a la Virgen de Regla y a la Virgen de La Caridad del Cobre, advocaciones marianas de la religión cristiana con Yemayá y Ochún respectivamente, ambas deidades de la cultura Yoruba que se cristaliza en un solo cuerpo litúrgico al que se denomina Regla de Ocha o Santería.

In the history of Cuban anthropology, little attention has been paid to several women who have, nevertheless, obtained professional recognition from the international academic community. Calixta Guiteras Holmes is one such case, with her unique characters. Another less known but equally relevant woman was Carolina Poncet de Cárdenas, who formed a generation of highly active female pedagogues and folklorists. A different place is required to situate the life and work of a person who could be considered the modern founder of studies on Afro-Cuban religions, the writer and anthropologist Lydia Cabrera, who has only recently begun to be acknowledged by intellectual circles in official Cuban culture. An examination of these three figures is undertaken, and their contributions to anthropology are analyzed, opposing the hegemonic account of the history of science where the role of founders has generally been attributed to men. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo el analizar las particularidades del nivel morfológico adquiridas por algunos sustantivos pertenecientes a la lengua yoruba en su adaptación a la variante cubana del español, esencialmente a través de las prácticas de las religiones del complejo Ocha-Ifá, expresadas mediante los morfemas de género, número, así como los procesos de derivación y composición en la formación de palabras. A las religiones afrocubanas les son consubstanciales las ideas del trabajo y la brujeria. Estas ideas introducen dimensiones del ser humano que de lejos rebasan las relaciones de este dentro del mundo fenomenico. El trabajo y la brujeria abren la puerta a la enfermedad y a la muerte, dramatica correlacion en la que el sujeto aparece vinculado indisolublemente a una realidad trascendente, a la naturaleza y a la comunidad. La discusion que aqui se presenta emerge desde la experiencia etnografica y las narrativas de algunos participantes de estos sistemas religiosos en Bogota, en los que se vera como principales protagonistas a los nfumbi y eggun , como usualmente se designa al muerto o los muertos en dichos sistemas de referencia.

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar como o negro e a sua cultura integram a dramaturgia cubana contemporânea, observando aspectos relacionados às questões das identidades e à discussão da memória pessoal e coletiva, tendo como foco de análise alguns textos do autor Eugenio Hernández Espinosa.

Durante mas de siglo y medio diversos investigadores se han interesado por la multiple presencia africana en Cuba desde variados campos disciplinares. Los geografos Esteban Pichardo y Jose Maria de la Torre, el naturalista Felipe Poey, el medico Henri Dumont y el filologo Jose Miguel Macias realizaron diversas identificaciones matizadas por el nivel de conocimientos del siglo XIX, pero sirvieron de precedente a las diferentes aproximaciones y clasificaciones realizadas lo largo de los siglos XX y XXI. I compare the status of a sacred language in two very different religious traditions. In Judaism, the Hebrew language is the language of liturgy, prayer, and the Written Law. The traditional way of reading Torah passages involved translating them into Aramaic, the everyday language of communication in the Middle East in the first half of the first millennium CE. Later, other Jewish languages, such as Yiddish, played a role similar to that of Aramaic in the Talmudic period, constituting a system referred to as the "Traditional Jewish Bilingualism." Hebrew lexemes had denotations related to the realm of Biblical texts, while Aramaic / Yiddish lexemes had everyday references. Therefore, the act of translation connected the two realms or domains. The Lucumí (Santería) Afro-Cuban religion is a syncretic tradition combining Roman Catholicism with the Ifá tradition, which does not have a corpus of written sacred texts, however, it has its sacred language, the Lucumí (Anagó) language related to the Yoruba language of West Africa. While the Spanish-Lucumí bilingualism plays an important role in Santería rituals, the mechanisms of reference are very different from those of the Hebrew-Yiddish bilingualism in Judaism. In Santería, divinations about the meaning of Lucumí words play a role similar to the translations from Hebrew in Judaism. I further discuss the role of ritual dances in Santería for the transition from the sacred to the secular domain and a function of Hebrew epitaphs to connect the ideal world of Hebrew sacred texts to the everyday life of a Jewish community.

Аннотация. Статья посвящена ленгуа конго (lengua congo) -сакральному языку афро-кубинской духовно-магической традиции пало (palo), или пало монте (palo monte). В ней предложен обзор некоторых терминов и ритуальных формулировок, образующих каркас лексики ленгуа конго, в том числе слов, зафиксированных автором в ходе полевых исследований в Гаване в 2019 г. и общения с информантами в 2020 г. Смысл и происхождение некоторых формулировок остаются дискуссионными. Сакральный язык пало, берущий свои истоки в киконго, рассматривается в статье как этнорелигиозный феномен, отражающий процессы транскультурации и находящийся в особой связи с босалем, креольским языком Кубы. При этом лингвистический статус ленгуа конго остается проблемным: по мнению автора статьи, ленгуа конго не может отождествляться с босалем и должен быть исследован в дальнейшем с исторических и этнологических позиций. В статье также представлен обзор современных гипотез о лексической основе ленгуа конго. На некоторых примерах демонстрируется связь ленгуа конго с киконго и приобретение рядом терминов новых значений. Исследование ленгуа конго и других малоизученных сакральных языков Нового Света видится актуальным в связи с социально-политическими и культурными трансформациями постколониальных обществ и новым витком исторического развития афрогенных культов.

This paper examines the presence of African languages and spiritual practices of Candomble, Santeria and Vodou religions in Brazil, Cuba and Haiti respectively. The three religions are known to have been originated by African slaves that were mostly captured in- and transferred from West and Central Africa to Latin America. Currently, the three religions are not only followed by African descendants, but also by people of various ethnic backgrounds worldwide. Thus, people flock to the three countries regularly to be initiated into this African-based religions and cultures. On the other hand, similar spiritual practices on the African continent seem to be generally stigmatized if not demonized. Findings presented in this paper are as a result of direct observations and open interviews over a four months of fieldwork, as well as desktop reviews of existing literature. El artículo expone una concepción sociohistórica de derechos humanos y muestra que el vínculo entre sociedad civil y religiosidades (y en especial sus formas institucionalizadas, o sea, plasmadas en iglesias, como es el caso del catolicismo) tiene un polo fuerte (la sociedad civil) y uno débil (las iglesias). En el campo de derechos humanos, las iglesias no pueden oponerse al Estado ni a la sociedad civil. Vale para todos los Estados que han firmado los protocolos y pactos de derechos humanos. De esta manera una iglesia, por ejemplo, puede rechazar la práctica homosexual en su seno, pero no puede perseguir ni acosar de forma alguna esta práctica en la existencia social.
