This thesis forwards the concept of the ‘Old Western Men’, a phrase borrowed from C. S. Lewis, who used this term to assert the presence of a ‘Great Divide’ in history. Modernity, he believed, was essentially secular, unlike what had preceded it. In this sense, he was in opposition to it as a Christian. This thesis’s unique contribution to the current literature is that it applies Lewis’s identification of the Old Western Men to a broader spectrum of intellectuals and artists, previously referred to, more narrowly, as the ‘Catholic literary revival’. This Ph.D. locates such a revival within a broader ‘religious mode of response’ to modernity, which such men of letters as Lewis believed to be fundamentally materialistic; meaning that modernity denied the existence of an objective spiritual reality. Chapter one describes the general concept of the Old Western Men, including how it confronted secular modernity by attempting to reconcile mind with matter as part of an intellectual via media (middle way); it will also examine the importance that some intellectuals invested in the concept of imaginative understanding. Chapter two focuses on an Old Western emphasis on the ‘More-Than-World’ within the world, one that was essentially sacramental, having come to reconcile reason with the imagination. Chapter three forwards the Old Western notion of thinking ‘christianly’ by cultivating a divine indifference to worldly catastrophe. This also entails examining the concept of self-sanctification, as well as how the Old Western Men responded to the violence of their century by inviting the supernatural into their lives. Chapter four concludes the thesis by examining the spiritual/cultural device of Christendom as a redemptive discourse combatting European nationalism and racialism.

Delivered on Feb. 8, 1996, at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island, this lecture was scheduled in conjunction with a Portuguese-government sponsored exhibition titled "Azulejo: Five Centuries of Portuguese Ceramic Tile." It served as an introduction for a general audience of non-specialists interested in learning about Fernando Pessoa's life and work. It surveys the basic facts of the poet's life: as a young student in English-language schools; his life in Lisbon; his theories and practices of heteronymism, including his account of the advent of those major heteronyms and their poems on March 8, 1914; his unsuccessful attempts to be recognized as a poet in the English tradition by having English-language poems printed in Lisbon but circulated only in the British isles. His peculiar triumph was that of a writer who, because he was bi-lingual and bi-cultural, was able to become a great Portuguese poet. As one critic, who is himself fluent in the English language and conversant with England's literary traditions, has put it, "[Pessoa] even \u2018reinvented' the Portuguese language, because he knew English."

Apresentada a 8 de Fevereiro de 1996, na Rhode Island School of Design (Escola de Desenho Gráfico de Rhode Island) em Providence, Rhode Island, EUA, esta palestra ocorreu em conjunto com a exposição "Azulejo: Five Centuries of Portuguese Ceramic Tile" (Azulejo: Cinco Séculos de Cerâmica Portuguesa), um evento patrocinado pelo governo português. A palestra serviu de introdução à vida e à obra de Fernando Pessoa, dirigindo-se a um público não-especializado. Abrangeram-se os aspectos principais da vida do poeta: seus tempos de jovem estudante em escolas de língua inglesa; sua vida em Lisboa; suas teorias e práticas de heteronimismo, inclusive seu testemunho da gênese dos principais heterónimos e seus poemas a 8 de Março de 1914; suas sucessivas tentativas frustradas em ser reconhecido como poeta de tradição inglesa, tendo seus poemas ingleses publicados em Lisboa mas distribuídos apenas nas ilhas britânicas. Seu triunfo peculiar foi o de um autor que, sendo bilíngue e bicultural, foi capaz de tornar-se um grande poeta português. Como escreveu um crítico, também fluente na língua inglesa e familiarizado com suas tradições literárias: "[Pessoa] chegou a 'reinventar' a língua portuguesa, porque conhecia o inglês".

Mr. Ormond: the testimonial from a classmate of Fernando Pessoa

ABSTRACT
This article presents newly discovered documents regarding Augustine James Ormond and reevaluates the bibliography available about him. Mr. Ormond provides one of the three testimonials from contemporaries of Fernando Pessoa about the life of the young poet in Durban, South Africa. After revisiting the research of Alexandrino Severino, João Gaspar Simões, Hubert Jennings and Roy Campbell concerning Mr. Ormond and his relationship with Pessoa, this contribution exhibits a dossier, including: facsimiles and critical transcriptions of documents found in the Fernando Távora private collection, as well as one drafted letter Pessoa addressed to Ormond himself, a document located at the National Library of Portugal.
RESUMO
Este artigo apresenta documentos recém-descobertos sobre Augustine James Ormond e reexamina a bibliografia disponível sobre ele. O Sr. Ormond fornece um dos três testemunhos de contemporâneos de Fernando Pessoa sobre a vida do jovem poeta em Durban, África do Sul. Após revisitar as pesquisas de Alexandrino Severino, João Gaspar Simões, Hubert Jennings e Roy Campbell acerca do Sr. Ormond e sua relação com Pessoa, este contributo exibe um dossiê, incluindo: facsímiles e transcrições críticas de documentos encontrados na coleção particular de Fernando Távora, assim como um rascunho de carta de Pessoa destinada ao próprio Ormond, um documento proveniente da Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.

Mr. Ormond: the testimonial from a classmate of Fernando Pessoa

ABSTRACT
This article presents newly discovered documents regarding Augustine James Ormond and reevaluates the bibliography available about him. Mr. Ormond provides one of the three testimonials from contemporaries of Fernando Pessoa about the life of the young poet in Durban, South Africa. After revisiting the research of Alexandrino Severino, João Gaspar Simões, Hubert Jennings and Roy Campbell concerning Mr. Ormond and his relationship with Pessoa, this contribution exhibits a dossier, including: facsimiles and critical transcriptions of documents found in the Fernando Távora private collection, as well as one drafted letter Pessoa addressed to Ormond himself, a document located at the National Library of Portugal.
RESUMO
Este artigo apresenta documentos recém-descobertos sobre Augustine James Ormond e reexamina a bibliografia disponível sobre ele. O Sr. Ormond fornece um dos três testemunhos de contemporâneos de Fernando Pessoa sobre a vida do jovem poeta em Durban, África do Sul. Após revisitar as pesquisas de Alexandrino Severino, João Gaspar Simões, Hubert Jennings e Roy Campbell acerca do Sr. Ormond e sua relação com Pessoa, este contributo exibe um dossiê, incluindo: facsímiles e transcrições críticas de documentos encontrados na coleção particular de Fernando Távora, assim como um rascunho de carta de Pessoa destinada ao próprio Ormond, um documento proveniente da Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.

Here we present two unpublished essays by Hubert Jennings about the challenges of translating the poetry of Fernando Pessoa: the first one of them, brief and fragmentary, is analyzed in the introduction; the second, longer and also covering issues besides translation, is presented in the postscript. Having as a starting point the Pessoan poem "O que me doe" and three translations compared by Hubert Jennings, this presentation examines some aspects of poetic musicality in the Portuguese language: verse measurement, stress dynamics, rhymes, anaphors, and parallelisms. The introduction also discusses how much the English versions of the poem, which are presented by Jennings, recreate (or not) the musical-poetic dimensions of the original text.

Reproduzem-se aqui dois ensaios inéditos de Hubert Jennings sobre os desafios de se traduzir a poesia de Fernando Pessoa: o primeiro deles, breve e fragmentário, é analisado numa introdução; o segundo, mais longo e versando também sobre questões alheias à tradução, é apresentado em postscriptum. A partir do poema pessoano "O que me dói" e de três traduções comparadas por Hubert Jennings, esta apresentação enfoca alguns aspectos da música poética em língua portuguesa: medida do verso, dinâmica dos acentos, rimas, anáforas e paralelismos. A introdução também discute o quanto as versões do poema em língua inglesa, apresentadas por Jennings, refazem (ou não) os níveis músico-poéticos do texto original.
