Background: Stakeholders are people with an interest in a topic. Internationally, stakeholder involvement in palliative care research and health technology assessment requires development. Stakeholder involvement adds value throughout research (from prioritising topics to disseminating findings). Philosophies and understandings about the best ways to involve stakeholders in research differ internationally. Stakeholder involvement took place in seven countries (England, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway and Poland). PurposeThis paper aims to describe the emerging practice of joint management‐stakeholder‐committees (JMSCs) in which corporate executives take decisions in collaboration with stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachTo identify firms involving stakeholders in their governance arrangements, the authors analysed 51 companies regularly participating in Business in the Community's Corporate Responsibility Index in the UK. Animal health surveillance plays a vital role in ensuring public health, animal welfare, and sustainable food production by monitoring disease trends, early detecting (new) hazards, facilitating disease control and infection, and providing data for risk analysis. Good stakeholder collaboration across the sector can lead to better communication, better science and decision-making and more effective surveillance and response. An understanding of relevant stakeholders, their interests and their power can facilitate such collaboration. Розроблено метод протиризикового управління стейкхолдерами проєктів вітроенергетики, який враховує можливі стани системи взаємодії можливостей і загроз стейкхолдерів за значеннями їх балансів ризиків. Цей метод дає змогу підвищити ефективність прийняття управлінських рішень шляхом зменшення високих та середніх загроз для загрозливих стейкхолдерів.

The transdisciplinary research project LEGATO analysed the combined generation of provisioning, regulating and cultural ecosystem services in wet rice agriculture in South-East Asia and applied ecological engineering to future-proof it against global change and environmental pollution challenges. Due to its transdisciplinary character and the sheer size, a systematic stakeholder involvement was inevitable. Starting with stakeholder identification by snowballing from a limited number of contacts, we derived a multi-level stakeholder analysis and tried to involve those identified as relevant. Applying different means and aiming at different depth of involvement, the effort can be judged successful. The paper describes the methods used to identify and classify stakeholders, and key elements of the stakeholder management, guided by the BiodivERsA Stakeholder Activation Handbook. While on the local level, farmers and extension workers turned out to be influential and interested stakeholders in both countries, as well as local (PH) or provincial authorities (VN), differences were manifest on higher levels due to the divergent institutional setting. National-level agents were hard to get interested in both countries, and influential agents along the production chain, including middle men, were not really interested in collaboration.

In recent years, Zambia has developed key disability policies, yet little is known about how these policies were made. The objective of this research is to explore disability policymaking in Zambia according to the perspectives of Zambian disability policy stakeholders. Using a qualitative study design that was informed by the Knowledge Translation (KT) Triad, we conducted semi-structured interviews with fifteen disability policy stakeholders regarding their participation in Zambian policymaking as a disability advocate, decision maker, or researcher. Participants' perspectives on policymaking were analysed descriptively and organised according to the stages of the policy cycle. We also conducted a critical analysis of the participants' accounts, allowing us to highlight novel roles of researchers in policymaking, frequent involvement by international stakeholders, and patterns of policymaking activities between decision maker and disability advocate stakeholders. This study improves understanding of Zambian disability policymaking. This improved understanding can be used domestically by stakeholders to make more informed decisions regarding their own engagement in disability and globally by those seeking insights into the processes behind Zambia's recent growth in disability policy.

The forest plays an important role in New Brunswick’s economy. The Fundy Model Forest, located in southeastern New Brunswick developed a multi-stakeholder approach to public participation in sustainable forest management. This paper presents the main results of a research conducted in the year 2000 with representatives of the 31 FMF partner organizations. The objectives of the survey were mainly to verify the responsibility taken by partner organizations in term of community capacity and leadership in communities in order to develop and optimize collaborative management of forest resources. Responding to accelerating climate change impacts requires broad and effective engagement with stakeholders, at multiple geographic and governance levels. Stakeholder participation has been hailed as a facilitated approach in climate change adaptation that supports social learning, depolarization of perceptions, and fosters collective action. But stakeholder participation remains loosely interpreted and evaluating measures are limited. This study employs social network analysis (SNA) to investigate how social relations among stakeholders, which emerge as a result of participation, are associated with stakeholder learning, as changes in perceptions of climate change. We hypothesized that reciprocal ties of understanding, respect, and influence can predict changes in perceptions of climate change. This approach was applied to a case study in Deal Island Peninsula, Maryland (USA) where local residents, scientists, and government officials met from 2016 to 2018 to collaboratively manage the impacts of sea-level rise in their communities. We found that social relations based on mutual understanding, respect, and influence are positively associated with perceptions of climate change. We provide a detailed conceptualization and implementation of a network-based approach that may serve as a potential quantitative performance measure of stakeholder participation processes in climate change adaptation. Overall, this study provides empirical evidence of the role that emerging social relations have on enhancing or constraining social learning among stakeholders in the Deal Island Peninsula project.

Despite the proliferation of information technology, the implementation of information systems remains problematic. While some organizations have been successful in implemen ting information systems, many systems fail to live up to expectations and some end up as disasters. This article describes how stakeholder analysis was used in the successful implemen tation of a decision support system in the Nev/ Zealand army. The system gives legal advice to New Zealand Army commanders about the laws of armed conflict.

There is a need to bring methods to bear on public problems that are inclusive, analytic, and quick. This paper describes the efforts of three pairs of academics working from three different though complementary theoretical foundations and intervention backgrounds (ie ways of working) who set out together to meet this challenge. Each of the three pairs had conducted dozens of interventions that had been regarded as successful or very successful by the client groups in dealing with complex policy and strategic problems. One approach focused on leadership issues and stakeholders, another on negotiating competitive strategic intent with attention to stakeholder responses, and the third on analysis of feedback ramifications in developing policies. This paper describes the 10-year longitudinal research project designed to address the above challenge. The important outcomes are reported: the requisite elements of a general integrated approach and the enduring puzzles and tensions that arose from seeking to design a wide-ranging multi-method approach.

Purpose – The research reported in this paper takes a critical look at the process of multi-stakeholder consultation and management in a PPP project environment, to fill the gaps in the existing literature. It considers the various problems encountered on PPP initiatives around the world that have led to public opposition and failure of some PPP projects. Two interconnected aspects are tackled: definition of the principal project stakeholder and the management of the principal project stakeholder, as a multi-stakeholder. Progress towards full sanitation coverage in urban areas is slow, with one of the big challenges in East Africa and many other areas being reaching the large proportion who live in informal settlements. The unique characteristics of informal settlements impose varying challenges in installing adequate sanitation facilities. A comparative case study using mixed methods conducted in three East African cities revealed varied perceptions of the residents on barriers hindering the process of toilet installation. Lack of money, topography, lack of space, siting on marginal land, difficult to access sanitation material and services and lack of information were perceived as barriers by residents, but differed between cities. There are different examples of successful strategies to tackle the barriers to sanitation in each city and these offer some opportunities for each of the study cities, as well as other cities with similar challenges, to learn how the same challenges are tackled elsewhere.

Purpose-To create a 'refined' (with unnecessary elements removed) definition of the term stakeholder, thereby removing confusion surrounding use of this term from the general and project management arenas. Design/methodology/approach-A method of deriving refined definitions for a group of terms by ensuring there are no unnecessary elements causing internal conflict or overlap is adopted and applied to resolve the confusion. Findings-The refined definitions of stake and stakeholder are in terms of an interest and activity. This avoids all extensions of meaning introduced by defining particular types of stakeholders and/ or their degrees of impact. It also resolves the multiplicity of conflicting meanings possible when silent or assumed qualifiers of a word are ignored, restricting definition to, for example project stakeholders or stakeholders of a firm. These definitions are carried forward into a mapping of the stakeholder locus of interest on an activity rather than a company base, enabling generic categorisation of stakeholders to be proposed for use in both private and public sectors. A governance difficulty with the term customer also emerged and a resolution to this is proposed. Research limitations/implications-Resolution of the academic contention around the definition of stakeholders will facilitate future research endeavours by removing confusion surrounding the term. It can also provide clarity in governance arrangements in public and private sectors. Verification of the method used through its success in deriving this 'refined' definition suggests its suitability for application to other contested terms. Practical implications-Projects and businesses alike can benefit from removal of confusion around the definition of stakeholder in the academic research they fund and attempt to apply. Social implications-A refined definition of the stakeholder concept will facilitate building social and physical systems and infrastructure, benefitting organisations, whether public, charitable or private. Originality/value-Clarity resulting in the avoidance of confusion and misunderstanding together with their consequent waste of time, resources and money.

This study examines the mediation effect of Stakeholder Commitment in the Relationship between Stakeholder Participation and Project Sustainability. A self administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 86 NGOs in Uganda. Data was analyzed using Baron and Kenny’s Approach to mediation (1986). Results revealed that Stakeholder Participation is a significant predictor of the Project Sustainability. This can be seen from the Beta value which was significant, showing a significant model (Beta = .619, p<.01). Results also revealed that the Stakeholder Participation is a significant predictor of Stakeholder Commitment and therefore the two are practically related variables (Beta = .464, p<.01). Results also show that Stakeholder Commitment is a predictor of project sustainability and therefore the two are statically significant with a Beta Value of (Beta = .569, p<.01). Aim This study identifies and compares perceptions of autonomous vehicle (AV) implementation among three Swedish stakeholder groups: Future Users, Urban Planners, and Developers. Method Semi-structured comparative focus groups were conducted separately with each of the three groups of stakeholders and the transcripts were analysed in broad themes using thematic analysis. Results Assumptions, hopes, concerns, and direction of development were the main themes that emerged from the analysis. ABSTRACT
Pre-extension demonstration and evaluation of recently released bread wheat varieties was carried out on 17 trial farmers’ field. The new variety, Hachalu, was demonstrated against Galan and Dambal varieties in which 10m * 10m plot size was allocated for each variety. Row planting was used where the seed rate of 150 kg/ha and fertilizer rate of 100 kg/ha for both NPS and UREA was applied. Data such as yield data, number of farmers participated on training and mini filed days and farmers’ feedback were collected. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze yield performance of the varieties. ANOVA was used to detect yield difference among varieties. Awareness creation was carried out for farmers and agricultural experts through training and mini field days. Accordingly, a total of 171 and 163 stakeholders were involved on training and mini field days, respectively. The result of ANOVA test indicated that Galan variety gave relatively highest mean yield of 43.33 qt/ha followed by Dambal which gave 37.23 qt/ha while 30.11 qt/ha was recorded for Hachalu variety. The yield difference among these varieties is also statistically significant at less than 1% level of significance. Farmers were encouraged to evaluate and select these varieties by setting their own selection criteria. Accordingly, group discussion was organized in which the role of the researchers was facilitating the discussion. Finally, farmers reported through their group leaders as Galan variety relatively satisfies their criteria. Hence, Galan variety is recommended for those who need to scale out in target areas.

Multi-Stakeholder Platforms are a currently popular concept in the international water world. It is however not a very well defined phenomenon. The present article unpacks the concept, proposes to see platforms as networks, and identifies two ´schools of thought´: social learning and negotiation. It attempts a preliminary typology of platforms encountered in real life, in which the Comités de Bacia in Brazil, for all their shortcomings, come out as a relatively influential type. In closing, the article then identifies reasons for non-participation, suggesting that it is an inevitable corollary of organised participation.

In this paper, we undertake a stakeholder analysis of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's Digital Platforms Inquiry to understand the nature and influence of different forms of public input. Our findings show that nation-state regulation of digital platforms is now very much on the policy agenda worldwide, with a focus upon the competition policy dimensions of platform regulation. The second key finding is that the regulatory activism of the ACCC have ensured that the Inquiry and its findings have had maximum public impact. Finally, we argue that the key dynamic shaping the Inquiry was the competing demands of the traditional news media publishers and digital platforms, and that civil society input was relatively limited and secondary to the final recommendations.

These dimensions suggest a static stakeholder group membership defined by role and work rather than by issue or interest, highlighting the importance of thinking about internal communication from the receiver's point of view. According to Chen et al., (2006, p. 242) the linkages between internal corporate communication and team, peer, and project team communication and employee engagement remain under-explored. It is the three-way association between a) team, project, and peer internal communication, b) internal corporate communication and c) employee engagement that offers the potential of greater levels of employee engagement in all organisations. Though Welch and Jackson (2007, p. 188) state that internal corporate communication, among other goals, can promote a sense of belonging and contribute to organisational commitment, there is also a concern, as Welch and Jackson acknowledge, that a predominantly one-way approach to internal corporate communication leads to information overload. However, it is possible that internal corporate communication can be one-way and twoway; more symmetrical, as in the excellence model of public relations (Grunig, 1975; Grunig and Hunt, 1984; Grunig, 1992), and more relational as Ledingham (2006) suggests in a relationship management approach to public relations. The logistics of senior managers discussing strategy with all employees, especially in large organisations, are considerable though not insurmountable. Marques (2010, p. 49) points to concerns raised by Chen et al., (2006) that research has tended to ignore member satisfaction with organizational communication practices and seeks to address this through the identification of criteria for successful communication. Zaremba (2006, p. 114) suggests that "foundational" criteria are; timely, clear, accurate, pertinent and credible. In academic research, Marques (2010, p. 52) found that responsibility (content and context), conciseness, professionalism (business-like) and sincerity (genuineness) are also important. Developing Internal Communication Practice That Supports Employee Engagement Kalla (2005, p. 302) highlights the lack of application of theory to practice, "…a paradox exists because, although increasing awareness concerning the importance of communication to organisations exists, that knowledge appears to have rarely translated to practice". In terms of managing internal communication, Kalla (2005) argues that an integrated approach is important. Four domains are suggested: 1) Business (the practicalities), 2) Management (knowledge sharing), 3) Corporate (that done by professional internal communication teams) and, 4) Organisational (with a focus on meaning). Interpersonal internal communication Bambacas and Patrickson (2008, p. 53) suggest that "It would appear that the literature on communication has investigated general aspects of interpersonal communication rather than communication skills" and that "Few articles have considered specific interpersonal communication variables". It is therefore appropriate to briefly explore effective internal interpersonal communication before turning to employee engagement in the next section. According to Larkin and Larkin (1994, p xi) there are three ways to communicate with employees: 1) Communicate directly to supervisors, 2) Use face-to-face communication, and 3) Communicate relative performance of the local work area. It is clear that communicating is what managers spend a lot of the day doing. As Tourish and Hargie (2009, p. 9) report, "…supervisors spend between one-third and two-thirds of their time interacting with what are still sometimes termed "subordinates". Tourish and Hargie (2009, p. 15) state that agreement in the literature suggests that number one in best communication practices by leading companies is "Communications training…especially for senior leaders". Murray (2012, p. 179) observes that communication is a top three skill of leadership that is sadly neglected. However, what should training be about, if it is to lead to commitment and engagement? According to academic research conducted through in-depth interviews with 32 senior HR managers, "the skill of maintaining clarity and consistency of messages was rated as having the utmost importance" Bambacas and Patrickson (2008, pp. 65-6). This research also indicates that there are "problems in trying to link organisational expectations, the organisational vision to those of the individual…this coincided with the two-way communication problem that was continuously voiced by respondents". This highlights the significant challenges in integrating internal corporate communication with communication at the team/project peer and line manager level in a consistent way. Failing to do this, according to Bambacas and Patrickson (2008, p. 64) means that commitment will not be secured. Developing Internal Communication Practice That Supports Employee Engagement Alfes et al., (2010, p. 5), in a CIPD research report, define engagement as "being positively present during the performance of work by willingly contributing intellectual effort, experiencing positive emotions and meaningful connections to others". Although this definition does not include an explicit connection to the organisation, they identified a broad set of drivers: meaningfulness of work, voice-being able to feed your views upwards, senior management communication and vision, supportive work environment, person-job fit, line management style. Of these, meaningfulness and voice were highlighted as the two most important factors. The authors suggest (2010, p. 24) that meaningfulness is created "through regular communication about the organisation's vision and future objectives. Creating a common framework helps employees to see a bigger picture in their daily work". Scherbaum et al., (2010, p. 191-2) revealed that an organisation's vision, employee development, internal communication and top leadership rank highest as drivers across a range of different analytical approaches. However, internal communication is not analysed in depth in this study and so specific aspects of communication that are important for employee engagement are not examined. More recently, Gourlay et al., (2012) distinguish between different levels of engagement, described as "transactional" and "emotional". The distinction between the two terms is set out as follows: Transactional engagement is shaped by employees' concern to earn a living, to meet minimal expectations of the employer and their co-workers, and so on. Emotional engagement is driven by a desire on the part of employees to do more for (and to receive morea greater psychological contractfrom) the organisation than is normally expected. Correlations between drivers and emotional engagement show that person-organisation fit and organisational identification are the two most correlated factors and that they are more highly correlated than the quality of line management (0.67, 0.62 and 0.37 respectively) (Gourlay et al., p. 24). Finally, in making the case for communication, Tourish and Hargie, (2009, p. 10) report that in the UK's 100 best companies to work for as identified by the Sunday Times, 63 per cent of those listed had employees who are strongly engaged and "unsurprisingly, communication emerges as a recurrent theme". However, general levels of engagement are, according to Truss et al., (2006, p. xi) low-only three in ten of UK employees were actively engaged with their work. Alfes et al., (2010, p. 6) report that 8 per cent of employees are 'strongly engaged'. A further 70 per cent can be described as 'moderately' or 'somewhat' engaged and just 1 per cent as very weakly engaged, with the remaining 21 per cent neither engaged nor disengaged.

The stakeholder impacts of a project can be estimated by the comparison of the financial and economic impacts of the project on the key stakeholders of a project. This analysis allows one to estimate how the income changes caused by the project that are distributed across the key groups affected by the project. This analysis allow for a reconciliation of the financial, economic, and distributional aspects of a cost benefit analysis. It also identifies if the project does or does not address the principal social objectives of the society. This chapter covers how the benefits and costs associated with a project are identified and measured for the principal stakeholder groups in a country.
