Introduction: translation of swearwords has unceasingly gained traction in audiovisual translation. In subtitling, swearing does not only warrant linguistic consideration but other multimodal elements, such as intonation and body movement. Apart from subtitling technicalities, the difficulties of swearword translation are also impeded by their explicit and implicit forms, as well as the linguistic-cultural differences in sourcetarget texts. This study aims to deliberate on the Malay translation of English swearwords of 'fuck' and 'shit' in two episodes of Netflix TV series The History of Swearwords. Method: to this end, it employs a comparative and descriptive analysis by developing a parallel corpus by utilising AntConc and AntPConc software. The selection of Netflix posits no local law or policy restrictions and censorship. Results: the comparative analysis found a linkup between creative and formal subtitling of the swearwords, which signals a prevalent pragmatic and cultural foundation in the translation, especially vis-à-vis the deletion and neutralisation procedures. The study also raises other notable concerns, such as the identification and semantic comprehension of swearwords by the series subtitlers. Conclusions: overall, the study posits that the socio-pragmatic factors, among others are still central for the English-Malay translation strategies of the swearwords in maintaining both linguistic accuracy and cultural appropriateness for target audience.

This paper examines the role of euphemisms in the context of Nzema. It however discusses the Nzema examples alongside Akan, a sister language. Euphemisms can be linked to bone marrow in the sense that they are inseparable from language just as marrow is with bone. That is to say, it is highly impossible for bones not to have marrow as they are already embedded or built into the bones for varying purposes. Inasmuch as a body without breath is lifeless, a language that has no euphemistic expressions can also be said to be inadequate with respect to its functional and stylistic aspects. We use language to communicate and euphemism is a proper language style that people pursue in social communication in order to reach an ideal communication effect. In daily life, individuals occasionally use language to connect with other individuals, and they have their specific manner to pick the language variety which can affirm their character. This language can be in the form of verbal and nonverbal language. This research aimed at finding out the types of verbal and non-verbal taboo, along with the mythical and factual reasons underlying their usage. The method used was qualitatively based. The data collection was done through several interviews with the participants who are the native speakers of Acehnese in Nagan Raya. Later on, the data were recorded using an android device and in the analysis, the three-step analysis was employed. The process was data reduction, data display, and data verification. Snitching is the act of providing information to the authorities in exchange for rewards. Although snitching is, strictly speaking, a taboo among street offenders and prison inmates worldwide, offenders regard some types of snitching as relatively more acceptable than others. Studies regarding the social meaning of snitching have mostly been conducted with reference to American and European contexts, while the situation in the Asian or Chinese context has not been thoroughly explored. This paper helps to fill a research gap by examining the characteristics of the social meaning of snitching in a severely under-researched context—the inmate culture within Chinese drug detention centers. The article is based on the thesis that in certain situations, adjudication of guilt of marital breakdown may violate the ”welfare of the child” of divorcing parents. The article answers the question of whether the provisions of the Family and Guardianship Code relating to divorce should be amended and the adjudication of fault for marital breakdown abandoned, when one of the arguments in favor of this solution is the welfare and protection of the minor. In doing so, two proposals for changes were made. The first, involving the repeal of Article 57 of the Family and Guardianship Code (i.e., abandoning the court’s determination of which spouse is at fault for the breakdown of the marriage) and amending Article 60 of the Family and Guardianship Code, and the second, indicating how the institution of an “ombudsman for the interests of the child” could be used.

The article discusses how the taboo theme of incest is narrated both visually and verbally in the controversial Norwegian picturebook Blekkspruten (The Squid) from 2016, authored by the famous Norwegian artists Gro Dahle, a writer, and Svein Nyhus, an illustrator. The duo had previously tackled numerous contentious themes in their books, such as domestic abuse, gender disparity and mental illness, but this time the subject seems particularly problematic to present in a children’s book. The article discusses picturebooks illustrated by a Norwegian artist, Svein Nyhus, to show his specific symbolic manner of depicting the child’s environment. It is argued that the illustrator employs characteristic recurrent elements of home representations and elaborates an interesting interplay of outer and inner spaces, consistently focusing the child’s perspective. This is demonstrated by an analysis of four picturebooks by the Norwegian artist: Pappa! (1998, Daddy!), Snill (2002, Nice), Sinna mann (2003, Angry Man) and Håret till mamma (2007, Mum’s Hair). The books have been regarded as ambitious literature for children, addressing difficult issues or even sometimes breaking a taboo. The article explores two aspects of translations of Nordic children’s literature, which is more and more often defined by its authors as aimed at all readerships with no respect to age (allålderslitteratur). This stance may affect the theory of translation in reference to the category of the implied reader, which will have to be reconsidered. The concept of all-age literature is presented in the article as a solution to long academic discussions about the presence of an adult implied reader of children’s literature. The other perspective shows the presence of Scandinavian picturebooks on the Polish book market which have been published within the latest decade (e.g. by Svein Nyhus, Gro Dahle, Pernilla Stalfelt, Pija Lindenbaum, and Ulf Nilsson). The study was conducted to examine the effect of some socio-cultural practices on fisheries management in Ghana. A case study was done on the bottom set gillnet fishery at Apam and Egyaa No.1 in the Central Region of Ghana. Data were collected through field observations and interviews. The study revealed that male children in fishing communities in Ghana were introduced to fishing at younger ages to ensure continuation of the family trade. Fishing partnership systems practiced had the potential to cause underestimation of fishing effort, while exceptions to the fishing holiday practiced in Ghana served as a loophole for violation of the taboo. Some socio-cultural practices hinder the success of some fisheries management strategies. Dead bodies – and the graves in which they are interred – are often highly contested within Holocaust campscapes. Although photographs of bodies at places like Bergen-Belsen, Dachau, and Ohrdruf emerged in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, the exhumation of mass graves of Holocaust victims for either judicial or humanitarian reasons has become something of a taboo subject. Whilst some see dead bodies in these environments as evidence of a crime, others view them as relatives, friends, and loved ones who require a proper burial, a marked burial site, or should be left undisturbed. Disputes arise between governments, communities, individuals, and religious groups when accounting for Halacha (Jewish Law) and the dead. This research was focused on taboo words used in Deli Javananese dialect. It was aimed at describing the classification of taboo words used in Deli Javanese dialect namely sex; death; excretion; bodily functions; religious matters; and politics and to investigate how frequent the taboo words were used by Javanese community in Karang Sari village of Medan city, North Sumatera.  The descriptive qualitative method was applied by describing taboo words used by the Javanese communtiy. The approach is sociolinguistics, which studies the perspectives of using taboo words among society in Deli Javanese dialect. The data were collected by interviewing three informants with different ages, and taking a note to identify the data of this research. The country also harbors very ancient human populations whose relationship with nature is very intimate and where animals play important roles for their livelihood. Located in the South-west region of Cameroon, the Nkwende Hills Forest Reserve (NHFR) represents an important wildlife conservation site because of its strategic position at the periphery of Korup National Park (KNP). In this article, I examine how the fear of miscegenation developed as a raison d'être for the construction and maintenance of apartheid. I argue that despite its efficacy at reproducing racial-caste formations, miscegenation taboo ultimately undermined its own hegemonic mythology by constructing contradictory erotic desires and subjectivities which could neither be governed nor contained. I consider how miscegenation fears and fantasies were debated in public discourse, enacted into law, institutionalized through draconian policing and punishment practices, culturally entrenched, yet negotiated and resisted through everyday intimacies. While crime statistics show that most incidences of interracial sex involved White men and women of color, the perceived threat to "White purity" was generally represented through images of White women-volks-mothers and daughters-in the Afrikaner nationalist iconography. White women's wombs symbolized the future of "Whiteness." This article offers a critique of the prevailing South African "exceptionalism" paradigm in apartheid studies. Detailed analyses of government commission reports (1939, 1984, 1985) and parliamentary debate records (1949) reveal considerable American influence on South Africa's "petty apartheid" laws, and especially the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act (1949) and Immorality Amendment Act (1950). While these "cornerstone" policies of apartheid developed from local socio-political conflicts and economic tensions, they were always entangled in global racial formations, rooted in transoceanic histories of slavery, dispossession, and segregation. This historical anthropological study of race/sex taboo builds on interdisciplinary literatures in colonial history, sociology, postcolonial studies, literary theory, art history, cultural studies, feminist theory, queer studies, and critical race theory.

The problem that prompts this study is how cherished taboos that sustain communal life and instill morality in indigenous Ghanaian society are eroding fast before ‘our very eyes.’ This leads to the quest for some of the taboos, their places and the future in modern Ghanaian morality. It has been observed that taboos are assessed and therefore considered as irrational and superstitious ideas and sometimes retarding societal progress. Social media is an area of social expression. Internet users like to publish their views online, often remaining anonymous. Virtual discussions often concern controversial topics, suicide included. The anonymity enables people to present their views bluntly. The aim of this study was to analyze Internet users’ comments on a teenager’s suicide. The content was examined in terms of categories of comments, ways of expression of Internet users and division into types of comments. The study was conducted using the content analysis method. The author analyzed 144 comments and 507 reactions following a post on one social network. The study helped identify two sections of comments. Edible insects are an important source of food to many African populations. The longhorn grasshopper, Ruspolia differens (Serville 1838), commonly known as senene in Tanzania is one of the most appreciated edible insects by societies around Lake Victoria crescent. Senene is primarily an essential treat for the tribes around the lake, e.g., the Haya of Tanzania, Luo of Kenya and Baganda of Uganda. Despite its importance as a food item and appreciation as a delicacy, there are few studies dealing with culture, beliefs and indigenous technology in connection with the senene. The main objective of this study was to survey indigenous technologies, processing methods and traditions in relation to senene consumption among the Haya tribe in Kagera region of Tanzania. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the associated lockdowns imposed by governments exposed disparities in how organisations on different continents were prepared for unplanned uncertainties. While the global north organisations, with their advanced adoption of 4IR technologies, quickly moved in to find affordable ways to ensure business continuity, adjustments by organisations in the global south were challenged by lack of modern advanced affordable technologies. The abrupt adoption of technologies associated with the fourth industrial revolution [4IR] in the global south meant an increased emphasis on remote working - a concept that has been taboo, especially in South Africa. The adoption meant fitting into a new world of work, which requires agility, re-learning, and de-learning of skills. The chapter aims to unpack the work challenges organisations face in times of crises and what it means for employee development in an African context.

İnsanoğlunun var olduğu günden bu yana toplumsal ilişkilerin düzenlenmesi zorunlu bir durum olmuştur. Yazının icadından önceki karanlık dönemde bu ilişkiler sözlü hukuk kuralları ile düzenlenmiştir. İnsanoğlunun sözlü ilk yasaları olarak kabul edilen tabular, modern hukukun teşekkülüne kadar toplumsal sınırların belirlenmesinde büyük rol oynamıştır. Bununla birlikte gelenek çerçevesinde şekillenerek toplumun var olması için zorunlu bir öncül olan tabular; mülkiyet, öteki ve hiyerarşi gibi müesseselerin teşekkülünde, desteklenmesinde ve korunmasında önem arz etmiştir.
Toplumun ideal dünya görüşüne hizmet etmiş olan tabular, sözlü kültür ürünleri aracılığı ile kuşaktan kuşağa aktarılarak günümüze kadar gelmiştir. Bu aktarım sürecinde tabular toplumsal değişimlere ayak uydurarak muhtelif dönüşümlere maruz kalmış ve toplumun ihtiyaçları neticesinde yeniden oluşum sürecine girmişlerdir. Bu değişim her ne kadar yenilenmiş ve mevcut düzenin ihtiyaçlarına ayak uydurmuş olsa da tedavülden kalkmış olan yasaklar kültürel belleğin bir yansıması olan halk anlatılarında yaşamaya devam etmiştir. Bununla birlikte toplumsal süreçlerin oluşumunda tabular önemli işlevlere sahiptir. Toplumun temel yapı taşlarından biri olan ve toplumsal yapının oluşmasında büyük bir rol oynayan iktisadi amiller, tabuların teşekkülü ve devamlılığı için önemli bir unsur olmuştur. Bahsi geçen iktisadi amillerin başında da mülkiyet gelmektedir.
Genel itibarıyla sahiplik, iyelik gibi anlamları ihtiva eden fakat özel olarak insan ve nesneler üzerinde en geniş haklar olarak tanımlanabilen mülkiyet, insanoğlunun var olduğu günden bu yana mevcudiyetini devam ettirmiştir. Genel hatları ile özel ve toplumsal olmak üzere iki ana bölümde ele alınabilecek mülkiyet, toplumun var olma mücadelesinin temel dayanaklarından biri durumundadır. İlkel toplumlarda hangi mülkiyet şeklinin bulunduğu hususunda araştırmacılar fikir birliğine varamamıştır. Bununla birlikte mülkiyet denince akla ev, toprak ve bireysel kullanım gereçleri gelmektedir. Fakat bunların dışında kültürün öngördüğü ölçüde insan da mülkiyetin ana unsuru olarak karşımıza çıkar. Nitekim köle alım-satımı, kadınların tazminat için kullanılması, çocukların ailenin soyunu ve şöhretini artıracak bir mülk olarak değerlendirilmesi gibi durumlar insanın da mülkiyete konu olduğunun göstergelerindendir.
Çalışma genel hatları itibarıyla üç ana bölümden oluşmuştur. Birinci bölümde tabunun tanımı, teşekkülü, muhtevası ve tabular üzerine yapılan çeşitli tasnifler verilmiştir. Akabinde tabu ile ilgili çeşitli tabirler, Türk kültüründe tabu, tabuların oluşum sürecine etki ettiği ve gelenek ölçüsünde desteklediği sınıf farkı oluşumları, öteki kavramlarının teşekkülünde tabuların rolü ile ilgili başlıklar detaylı bir şekilde ele alınmıştır. Ayrıca Türklerde bulunan sınıfsal yapı ve öteki olguları tarihsel veriler ışığında örneklerle ifade edilmiştir.
İkinci bölümde mülkiyetin; tanımı, teşekkülü ve muhtevası, mülkiyet türleri ve Türklerde mülkiyet anlayışı ile ilgili başlıklar değerlendirilmiştir. Mülkiyetin günümüzde muhtelif dalları mevcut olsa da türler kısmı iki ana bölümde ele alınmıştır. Türklerde mülkiyet anlayışı ise mülki unsur ve mülki sembol esasına göre iki ana hatta hazırlanmıştır. Türk kültürü özelinde genel hatları ile tespit edilen mülki unsurlar, bu unsurların kültürel yansımaları olan semboller ile birlikte verilmiştir. Mülkiyete konu olan şahıs ya da eşya mülki unsur, bu unsurların kültürel destekleyicileri olan geleneksel uygulamalar mülki sembol başlığı altında aktarılmıştır. Mülki unsurlar; beden, su, toprak, ev, kurgan, hayvan sürüleri, kadın, çocuk olmak üzere sekiz adettir. Bu unsurların tamamlayıcısı olan ve gelenek çerçevesinde mülkiyet müessesesinin kültürel yansımaları olarak ele aldığımız semboller ise; damga, sınır-eşik-duvar, kut, orun-ülüş, od tegin, ad alma, kan davası, kula-trampa, leviratus, diyet-vergi-tazminat olmak üzere on adet olarak tespit edilmiştir.
Üçüncü bölümde ise; tabu ve mülkiyet, tabu ve masal arasındaki ilişkiler aktarılmıştır. Bununla birlikte Anadolu sahası Türk masallarında tespit edilen tabuların metin içerisindeki gösterimi yapılarak mülkiyetle olan ilişkisi tahlil edilmiştir. Masal ile ilgili toplam kırk bir adet tez ve basılı kitap temel alınmıştır. Bu çalışmalar arasından yüz on altı masalda tabu ve mülkiyet ilişkilerini ihtiva eden kesitler tespit edilmiştir. Bu masallar içerisinde otuz sekiz adet tabu ve dokuz adet mülki unsura rastlanmıştır. Bu tahliller bölümün sonunda tablo şekline getirilerek somutlaştırılmıştır. Tabloda; tabu, masalın adı (masalın şehri) ve mülki unsur bir bütün olarak gösterilmiştir. Son olarak bu üç bölümün dışında sonuç, kaynakça, dizin verilmiştir.

In preindustrial societies, a large proportion of body modifications were performed for therapeutic or prophylactic reasons. Cauterising or incising the skin and, of course, tattooing, could leave indelible marks that were sometimes deliberately sought or, conversely, avoided. This chapter identifies and describes the original practices, methods, and etiologies of the various types of therapeutic interventions employed across Eurasia and the Mediterranean regions, from antiquity to the early twentieth century, emphasizing primary sources and firsthand ethnographic data. It draws attention to little-known procedures that were nevertheless in widespread and ancient in use, such as cauterization with tinder (fungibustion), piercing, and puncturing. By comparing Greco-Roman and Chinese medical traditions it shows that literate medicines of these two distant cultural areas shared the same tendency to discredit and marginalize invasive interventions, or to make them less painful and likely to permanently scar the skin. More generally, the procedures studied here could contribute to embedding the emergence of certain body modification practices (tattooing, scarification, and piercing) within a therapeutic context, even if their purposes extended beyond healing or protection.

Background: The timely provision of comprehensive contraceptive services to Rohingya women is impeded due to a lack of clarity and understanding of their traditional beliefs and cultural frameworks. Recognizing this challenge, our aim is to explore the socio-cultural factors that influence the utilization of contraceptives among married Rohingya women living in the refugee camps of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. Method: A qualitative study was conducted in two unregistered Rohingya camps (Camp7&14) located in Ukhiya Upazila, Cox's Bazar from January 10th to January 20th, 2022. A total of 14 In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) were administered among married Rohingya refugee women of reproductive age (15-49), and 16 Key Informant Interviews (KIIs)were conducted with stakeholders involved in reproductive healthcare provision.
