Universal Evolutionary Development (Evo Devo) Studies

Studies in the field of evolutionary epistemology, conducted by followers of Konrad Lorenz at the Institute for Evolution and cognition in Altenberg situated not far from Vienna, go on nowadays. The modern trend is the search of ways of integration of the approach to understanding of evolution of biological species, of the approach to study of the individual development of living organisms and of the ecological approach, which begins to be successfully applied very wide not only in natural sciences but also in the humanities and social sciences. This trend has got a new name of eco-evo-devo-perspective. On the basis of K. Lorenz ethology and of his successors, cognitive biology is now under development. Cognitive biology embodies the convergence of cognitive sciences, life sciences and complexity studies. As a basis for it, some attitudes proposed by the Austrian biologist Paul Alfred Weiss (1898-1989) and the Austrian founder of the general system theory Ludwig von Bertalanffy (1901-1972) are accepted. These scholars introduced the very term “theoretical biology”. The theoretical biology in its modern scientific context represents comprehensive, cross-disciplinary integration of concepts. The theoretical biology involves studies in genetic components of changes, of evolution and development, i.e. studies of interconnection between evolution and development, between phylogenesis and ontogenesis. The theoretical biology includes all modern theoretical approaches, namely computational biology, biosemiotics, cognitive studies, naturalistic shifts in philosophy of science and in epistemology.

Исследования в области эволюционной эпистемологии, проводимые последователями Конрада Лоренца в Институте по исследованию эволюции и познания в Альтенберге под Веной, продолжаются ныне в плане поиска интеграции подхода к пониманию эволюции биологических видов, подхода к изучению индивидуального развития живых организмов и экологического подхода, который начинает применяться широко, не только в естественнонаучном, но и гуманитарном и социальном аспектах. Все это получает новое название eco-evo-devo-perspective. На базе этологии Лоренца и его последователей ныне развивается когнитивная биология, которая олицетворяет сближение когнитивных наук (cognitive sciences), наук о жизни (life sciences) и исследований сложности (complexity studies). В качестве основы принимаются установки, предложенные австрийским биологом Паулем Альфредом Вайссом (1898-1989) и австрийским теоретиком систем Людвигом фон Берталанфи (1901-1972), которые ввели термин «теоретическая биология». Теоретическая биология в ее современном научном контексте представляет собой всеобъемлющую, кросс-дисциплинарную интеграцию понятий. Она включает в себя исследование генетических компонентов изменений, эволюции и развития, т.е. исследование взаимосвязи между эволюцией и развитием, между филогенезом и онтогенезом. Теоретическая биология включает в себя все современные теоретические подходы – вычислительную биологию (computational biology), биосемиотику, когнитивные исследования, натуралистические сдвиги в философии науки и эпистемологии.

"The prospects of development of evolutionary epistemology
in the light of the modern discussions about possibilities of naturalistic approaches to understanding of functioning and development of consciousness, perception, thinking, embodiness and spirituality of a human being are under consideration in the book. The naturalistic approach
is stimulated by the modern preferences for doing transdisciplinary researches. It is shown that one of emerging trends is a combination of evolutionary epistemology with cognitive biology which embodies approaching of cognitive sciences and life sciences. The interconnection of evolution and development, phylogenesis and ontogenesis what is designated nowadays as the evo-devo-perspective is studied. The cognition is considered as an appearance of emergent properties of brain-body-consciousness in its physical and biosocial inbuilding
into environment rather than the building of representations of
the external world.

В сборнике обсуждаются перспективы развития эволюционной эпистемологии в свете современных дискуссий о возможностях натуралистических подходов к пониманию функционирования и развития сознания, восприятия, мышления, телесности и духовности человека. Натуралистический подход стимулируется современными предпочтениями к проведению трансдисциплинарных
исследований. Показывается, что один из наметившихся трендов - это соединение эволюционной эпистемологии с когнитивной биологией, которое олицетворяет сближение когнитивных наук и наук о жизни. Исследуется взаимосвязь между эволюцией и развитием, между филогенезом и онтогенезом, что обозначается сегодня как evo-devo-perspective. Познание рассматривается не столько как по-
строение репрезентаций внешнего мира, сколько как возникновение эмерджентных свойств мозга-тела-сознания в его физическом и биосоциальном встраивании в окружающую среду."

Предисловие

Эволюционная эпистемология является направлением современной неклассической эпистемологии. Получив мощный стимул для своего развития благодаря работам выдающегося австрийского ученого Конрада Лоренца и его учеников и последователей в Австрии, Германии и других странах во второй половине XX века, эволюционная эпистемология не так часто фигурирует в названиях научных статей и книг в последние 10-15 лет. Это, однако, не означает, что сама исследовательская программа потеряла свои ориентации и смыслы. Эволюционная эпистемология как версия натуралистической (или натурализованной) эпистемологии, вбирает ныне достижения естествознания и отвечает на вызовы современной когнитивной науки, в которой исследуются познавательные способности человека, a именно то, как человек воспринимает, мыслит, познает и творит окружающий его мир. Особое значение приобретает в настоящее время изучение когнитивных и креативных способностей человека, способов его познания и коммуникации в контексте изысканий в области нейрофизиологии, когнитивной психологии и когнитивной биологии, социобиологии и биополитики.  Именно здесь возможны, на мой взгляд, новые существенные прорывы в понимании мира и природы человека, в разгадке тайны познаваемости мира, прилаженности и взаимной подстройки человека и мира, а также сущности истины.
Уже в течение 20 лет, с 1992 года в Институте философии РАН существует сектор эволюционной эпистемологии. Сотрудниками сектора было подготовлено ряд трудов по проблемам истины, творчества, телесности в эпистемологии, но уже достаточно долгое время они не концентрировали свои коллективные усилия на проблемах собственно эволюционной эпистемологии, ее актуальных проблемах, состоянии современных исследований и путях ее дальнейшего развития. Замысел настоящего сборника состоял в том, чтобы попытаться ликвидировать этот пробел. Сотрудники сектора развивают здесь различные взгляды и осмысливают перспективы развития эволюционной эпистемологии каждый со своей позиции, определяемой собственным опытом философских размышлений и исследований. Читатели сборника могут проследить этот неявный и порой напряженный диалог об открытых проблемах, статусе и путях развития эволюционной эпистемологии с различных концептуальных точек зрения.

Настоящая книга является третьей частью задуманной автором большой монографии. В ней предпринимается попытка объединить преимущества Большой истории, то есть истории всего: от возникновения Вселенной до современного состояния человечества и эволюционистики. Автор стремился показать, с одной стороны, процесс роста эволюционной сложности мира, а с другой – сходства в эволюционных законах, принципах и механизмах на разных уровнях и этапах эволюции. Такая задача еще не решалась никем.
Первая книга была посвящена космической эволюции и истории от Большого взрыва 13,8 млрд лет назад до формирования Солнечной системы (4,57 млрд лет назад). Вторая книга – эволюции и истории ранней Солнечной системы в ее первый миллиард лет (от зарождения до конца поздней тяжелой бомбардировки метеоритами и установления орбит планет).
Третья книга включает довольно подробное описание планет и части спутников Солнечной системы, а также их 4,5-миллиардную историю и эволюцию в сравнении между собой и с эволюцией Земли. Важно отметить, что подобных исследований, которые бы представляли историю и эволюцию планет и спутников Солнечной системы в комплексе, с хронологией, сравнением истории планет в синхронных срезах, нет.
В этом, а также и в некоторых других отношениях данная книга является уникальной. Помимо истории планет и планетных тел нашей Солнечной системы, в этой книге также представлена краткая история химической эволюции – от зарождения первых атомов во Вселенной до абиогенеза на Земле, то есть этапа преджизни и формирования предпосылок для появления первых живых организмов. Раздел о химической эволюции очень важен для понимания как истории жизни (поскольку химическая абиогенная эволюция – это переход от косной к живой материи), так и истории Земли (геологической эволюции).
Книга будет интересна и полезна всем, кто интересуется проблемами космологии, эволюции и философии мироздания, кого волнуют проблемы устройства мира, тем, кто работает на стыке междисциплинарных проблем и хочет быть в курсе современных научных достижений. Она написана в достаточно популярной манере, но в то же время опирается на серьезные научные исследования, то есть рассчитана как на специалистов, так и на широкий круг читателей.

Humanity is on the threshold of recognizing the fundamental error in its view of life and death. Both death as well as active life is necessary to the vital formation of a larger, more essential whole. In this paper, I apply the sociology of knowledge and change as it pertains to death and focus on ways in which we can step outside its traditional frameworks and limitations. I also discuss topics related to death such as birth, aging, sickness, and war, and examine cultural differences in attitudes toward death. I offer varying perspectives including the Buddhist view and from these draw implications and conclusions. I apply the lenses of contemporary social scientists such as Edgar Morin, Kenneth Gergen, Edward Stewart, Milton Bennett, Mary Catherine Bateson, E. Doyle McCarthy, Philip Slater, and Piotr Sztompka. To these I add other relevant passages from the writings and speeches of key thinkers on the topic of death, in particular, Buddhist philosopher, peacebuilder, and educator, Daisaku Ikeda. To construct a more humanistic and sustainable view of life, it is first of all crucial to establish a culture which perceives death in its larger living context as but one cycle in the expansive eternity of life.

The evolution of life on Earth has produced an organism that is beginning to model and understand its own evolution and the possible future evolution of life in the universe. These models and associated evidence show that evolution on Earth has a trajectory. The scale over which living processes are organized cooperatively has increased progressively, as has its evolvability. Recent theoretical advances raise the possibility that this trajectory is itself part of a wider developmental process. According to these theories, the developmental process has been shaped by a yet larger evolutionary dynamic that involves the reproduction of universes. This evolutionary dynamic has tuned the key parameters of the universe to increase the likelihood that life will emerge and produce outcomes that are successful in the larger process (e.g. a key outcome may be to produce life and intelligence that intentionally reproduces the universe and tunes the parameters of 'offspring' universes). Theory suggests that when life emerges on a planet, it moves along this trajectory of its own accord. However, at a particular point evolution will continue to advance only if organisms emerge that decide to advance the developmental process intentionally. The organisms must be prepared to make this commitment even though the ultimate nature and destination of the process is uncertain, and may forever remain unknown. Organisms that complete this transition to intentional evolution will drive the further development of life and intelligence in the universe. Humanity's increasing understanding of the evolution of life in the universe is rapidly bringing it to the threshold of this major evolutionary transition.

Abstract The major goal of ecological evolutionary developmental biology, also known as "eco-evo-devo," is to uncover the rules that underlie the interactions between an organism's environment, genes, and development and to incorporate these rules into evolutionary theory. In this chapter, we discuss some key and emerging concepts within eco-evo-devo. These concepts show that the environment is a source and inducer of genotypic and phenotypic variation at multiple levels of biological organization, while development acts as a regulator that can mask, release, or create new combinations of variation. Natural selection can subsequently fix this variation, giving rise to novel phenotypes. Combining the approaches of eco-evo-devo and ecological genomics will mutually enrich these fields in a way that will not only enhance our understanding of evolution, but also of the genetic mechanisms underlying the responses of organisms to their natural environments. Abstract The integration of evolutionary biology with developmental genetics into the hybrid field of 'evo-devo' resulted in major advances in understanding multicellular development and morphological evolution. Here we show how insights from evo-devo can be applied to study the evolution of social behavior. We develop this idea by reviewing studies that suggest that molecular pathways controlling feeding behavior and reproduction in solitary insects are part of a 'genetic toolkit' underlying the evolution of a particularly complex form of social behavior, division of labor among workers in honeybee colonies. The evo-devo approach, coupled with advances in genomics for non-model genetic organisms, including the recent sequencing of the honeybee genome, promises to advance our understanding of the evolution of social behavior.

Some notions of the evolutionary ontological holism in ontological, cognitive and methodological aspects are discussed in the article. It is shown that holism becomes a new fundamental scientific paradigm that determines research strategies, while we return to the integrity of the knowledge, of life and activity orientations existed since ancient times. The ideas of holism become guidelines for creative minds that are flagships of social progress and determine the future of civilization.

В статье исследуются представления эволюционного холизма в онтологическом, когнитивном и методологическом аспектах. Показывается, что холизм становится новой фундаментальной научной парадигмой, определяющей  стратегии научных исследований, при этом осуществляется возврат к целостности знания и жизненных ориентаций, существовавших с древних времен. Идеи холизма становятся руководящими для креативно мыслящих людей, являющихся флагманами социального прогресса и определяющих будущее цивилизации.

This paper examines the age old question of the basis of moral value in a the new context of astrobiology, which offers a fresh perspective.  The goal is to offer the broad outline of a general theory of moral value that can accommodate the diversity of living entities we are likely to encounter beyond the confines of Earth.  It begins with ratiocentrism, the view that the possession of reason is the primary means by which we differentiate entities having moral value in and of themselves from those having moral value merely by virtue of the uses to which they can be put.  I extend this basic position by arguing that reason, sociality and culture tend to arise in evolution as a co-evolutionary “package deal.”  Because of this, it’s really the sociality-reason-culture triad (SRCT) which should be the criterion for intrinsic moral value, not reason alone. Interestingly, if the SRCT linkage is sufficiently strong, it follows that this sort of moral valuation would be shared by any non-human entities capable of reflection on the nature of such things, granting it a curious kind of objectivity.  Then I suggest that the unfolding of complexity produced by SRCT species may be the best means to realize the manifest destiny (or manifest complexity) of all life, which may provide an ultimate, metaphysical foundation for ethical value.  Finally, I outline how this new theory can be applied to different types of entities that we may encounter beyond Earth.
